Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino will reprise their roles in a long-awaited sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
The original film, which was released in 1997, follows two best friends as they realise they were not popular in school and decide to concoct elaborate lies to impress the peers who were unkind to them when they return to their home town for a school reunion.
It also starred Janeane Garofalo and Alan Cumming, with a cameo from Justin Theroux.
An Instagram post from 20th Century Studios announced that the movie was in production, showing Kudrow and Sorvino in costume sitting in director’s chairs emblazoned with the words Romy and Michele 2.
The picture was captioned: “The reunion you’ve been waiting for! The Romy and Michele sequel is now in production.”
Sorvino wrote in the comments: “It’s finally happening. Bursting with joy to be ‘reunited!'”
A sequel to the film has long been in the works with Friends star Kudrow and Mighty Aphrodite’s Sorvino marking the 25th anniversary of the film at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2022.
The pair donned co-ordinated blue and pink suits that paid homage to their outfits from the beloved film as they teamed up to present an award at the star-studded ceremony.
In the film, Kudrow wears a pale pink dress to the school reunion that gives the film its title, while Sorvino wears electric blue.
The duo recreated the voices of their dim-witted characters as they took to the stage, as Sorvino told Kudrow: “You look cute,” to which the Friends star replied: “I know, thanks.
“So do you, of course. Do you think this is the cutest anyone’s ever looked at an awards show?”
Sorvino continued: “I just realised this; we’re wearing great ensembles while at the same time presenting to great ensembles.”

The pair also whipped out a stack of Post-it notes, a reference to the fact their characters pretended to have invented the sticky note pads in an attempt to impress former classmates.
The original movie’s screenwriter Robin Schiff has reportedly returned to write the sequel, with Garofalo, Cumming, Camryn Manheim and Julia Campbell all reprising their roles from the original.
