‘Raging’ Kelly Ripa reveals toll of new show in unexpected revelation

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos opened up about the emotional toll of their new Hulu docuseries Squatters: Get the F*** Out of My House. The six-part series premiered on June 4 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney for bundle subscribers in the U.S.

The couple serve as executive producers on the new docuseries. The show follows homeowners as they struggle to reclaim their properties from squatters who are living in homes they do not own without paying rent. Featuring cases from Queens, Malibu, and Newark, the show highlights a range of disputes and examines the challenges homeowners face when navigating the legal system.

“I’m very much, if something is unjust, it enrages me,” Kelly told People in an interview. “I was shaking through half of these stories, just like shaking from rage.”

Meanwhile, Mark shared that he “would be in so much trouble if this happened to me”. He added: “All the things I thought about doing are against the law. That’s people’s initial instinct – like, ‘No, no, no, this is easy. Just get them out of your house.’ It’s not easy.”

Kelly’s interest in the project came after she read a Vanity Fair article about a squatting case in Malibu during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I said, ‘This is something. We have to make this into something. This is wild,'” she explained. “She did all the right things, and she got arrested,” said Kelly of a case featured on the show.

“I feel the worst for them because it wasn’t like they were trying to lease out the house. They’re selling the house. And next thing you know, the locks are changed on their house,” added Mark. The LIVE host explained that the show’s debut season is “just scratching the surface” of squatter issues. “I think it’s not just state to state, it’s community to community,” he shared.

Kelly continued: “It’s the audacity of the criminals, but it’s also their utterly destructive nature. They don’t just squat in your home, profit from squatting in your home, subleasing it to whoever wants to come and go. They are then destroying the property value of your home by taking all of the appliances out of your home. The fixtures, the beautiful chandeliers, ripping the wood out of the floor, selling off anything. They destroy everything.”

The six-part series includes these episodes – The Parasite of Malibu, The Dating App Squatter, The Skeleton and the Squatter, Don’t Piss Off Patti Peeples, and The Squatter and the S.W.A.T. Team.

“You can’t believe that they actually got away with this or getting away with this until you watch the resolution of the episode, which is pretty fun,” teased Mark.

Kelly and Mark’s new show is produced by Milojo and ABC News Studios, with Michael Halpern serving as the producer. John Henshaw also joins the couple as an executive producer. For ABC News Studios, David Sloan is the senior executive producer and Victoria Thompson is executive producer.
