Richard Gere says he ‘can retire now’ after son Homer’s acting success

Richard Gere has opened up about his son Homer’s success as an actor.

The 26-year-old son of Richard, 76, and his ex-wife, Carey Lowell, 65, made his TV acting debut this year, appearing on season three of HBO’s hit Euphoria as rising movie star Dylan Reid. He also stars alongside model Kaia Gerber in the new Ryan Murphy series The Shards, which comes out in August.

During a new interview with People, Richard shared what he thinks about his son following in his footsteps.

“One, he’s really good,” the Pretty Woman star said. “He really kind of preternaturally knows what he’s doing. But he’s also handling it really well. He’s a good kid. He’s a really good young man who kind of gets it, and this is not an easy job. Not everyone can function within it. So I think he can stay.”

“I still need to see his second episode of Euphoria, but he has this big thing coming up with Ryan Murphy, and he just finished shooting a film with Oliver Stone,” he added, before joking: “So I can retire now. I’m passing the torch.”

Richard continued about Homer’s acting career: “I don’t think he’s got to make a life choice to commit to this if he’s doing this now. He’s good at it and he’s having fun, but he can become a rock climber if he wants to do that.”

Along with Homer, Richard has two other sons — Alexander, seven, and James, six — whom he shares with his wife, Alejandra Silva.

Homer has previously spoken about being inspired by his father’s career. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the season three premiere of Euphoria last month, he said that The Agency star was someone who “gives great advice.”

“It’s not necessarily related to like the craft, but more like how do you carry yourself, how do you make this work in a positive way,” he explained, saying he thinks about those words of wisdom when he’s on set.

“I’m calling him everyday,” he added. “We’re super close. Having that kind of sounding board is amazing.”

He also reflected on joining the cast of Euphoria, calling it his “first real set experience” after being a part of various short films in college.

“Stepping into this is kind of jumping into the deep end, in a really cool way,” he said. “I found out two days before we had to film that I got the role. So I flew out the next morning.”
