‘They beat me until I lost consciousness’: growing reports of brutal arrests, torture and deaths in Iran’s prisons

‘They beat me until I lost consciousness’: growing reports of brutal arrests, torture and deaths in Iran’s prisons

Iranian writer Hamid Asefi wasn’t home on the afternoon of 5 March when armed intelligence agents stormed his Tehran apartment, breaking down the door with a sledgehammer and axe. After going unit to unit looking for him, they finally encountered him as he returned to the building. One of the agents “drew his handgun, shouted at me to stop, and before I had time to respond, struck me forcefully on the back of the neck and spine with the butt of his weapon, dragging me into the apartment,” Asefi told the Guardian in a written interview. When he requested an arrest warrant, the beating intensified. “Heavy blows were directed at my ribs, kidneys, temples and the back of my head. The beating was so severe that I lost consciousness once. When I regained consciousness, the assault continued,” he says. The assault on the 63-year-old continued after he was brought blindfolded to a detention centre, where an interrogator accused him of signing a statement condemning the regime’s January crackdown on protesters and being in contact with …

Witnesses accuse the Israeli army of arbitrary arrests in Syria

The place is Beit Jinn, in the countryside to the west of Damascus. It’s the night of November 28, 2025. Israeli soldiers launch a ground offensive. While bombs fall from the sky and artillery is fired at homes, clashes break out between Israeli soldiers and some villagers. A video posted online by the Israeli army shows soldiers arresting brothers Nidal Akasha Akasha and Muhammad Akasha Akasha in the fray. In a statement, the Israeli army claims that Nidal and Muhammad have ties to the Islamist group Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya. The FRANCE 24 Observers team interviewed a number of Syrians who had been arrested and then detained in an Israeli prison for months before being released. We also spoke to the families of those still detained. We also analysed rare images posted online by the Israeli army, which claims that they have been arresting “suspicious persons” or those “linked to armed groups”. Through our research, we identified three different arrest operations carried out by the Israeli army in 2025.  A total of 13 villagers died, and more …

Jonathan Andic, Eldest Son of Mango Fashion Chain Founder, Arrested In Father’s Death

On Tuesday, Jonathan Andic, the eldest son of the late founder of global Spanish fashion brand Mango, was arrested by the Mossos d’Esquadra—the police force of Spain’s Catalonia region—in connection to the death of his father, Isak Andic. Prior to his arrest, Jonathan Andic, who currently serves as the vice chairman of Mango’s board, had been under investigation for months in the case which was initially assumed to be nothing more than an accident. The investigation into Isak Andic’s death has also focused on the relationships between Isak Andic’s children and heirs and Andic’s partner, the golfer Estefania Knuth, as well as on the management of the company. Here’s timeline of the case so far: December 14, 2024 Isak Andic died at the age of 71 when he fell to his death in the Collbató caves in Barcelona’s Montserrat mountain while on a hike with Jonathan. Jonathan called the emergency services, who certified Isak’s death. The Mossos d’Esquadra took Jonathan’s statement two days later, on the 16th, and treated the case as an accident. At …

AI can lead to false arrests and wrongful convictions

AI can lead to false arrests and wrongful convictions

In Baltimore on Oct. 20, 2025, a 17-year-old student named Taki Allen was sitting outside his high school after football practice when an artificial intelligence-enhanced surveillance camera falsely identified the Doritos bag in his pocket as a gun. Within moments police cars arrived, officers drew their weapons and Allen was forced to his knees and handcuffed while they searched him. All they found was a crumpled bag of chips. The AI’s misidentification and the human decisions that followed turned a normal evening into a traumatic confrontation. On Dec. 24, 2025, Angela Lipps, a Tennessee grandmother, was released after spending five months in jail because facial recognition software had incorrectly connected her to fraud crimes in North Dakota, a state she had never visited. Police had arrested her at gunpoint while she was babysitting her four grandchildren. These are unfortunate examples of how AI can lead to mistreatment of people because of technical flaws as well as misplaced human faith in the technology’s supposed objectivity. These cases involve different tools, but the underlying issue is the …
