Sweden Arrests Chinese Captain of Suspected Russia-Linked Vessel

OSLO, May 4 (Reuters) – The Chinese captain of a seized oil tanker with suspected Russian links has been placed under arrest on suspicion of carrying false ‌documents and of violating ‌laws on seaworthiness, a Swedish prosecutor said on Monday. The coast guard and police on Sunday boarded the Syrian-flagged Jin Hui in Swedish territorial waters.  The captain, who was not named, will be interrogated on Monday, Senior Prosecutor Adrien Combier-Hogg said in a statement. Authorities said the vessel was believed to belong to the shadow fleet, a clandestine network of vessels Russia has used to evade Western sanctions imposed on it in response to the Ukraine war. As European nations have increased their efforts to disrupt the shadow fleet, Sunday’s arrest of the Jin Hui was Sweden’s fifth such action this year. Russia has not commented on the latest action, but has previously condemned interceptions of its vessels as hostile. It was not immediately known how the suspect responded to the ship’s seizure or the accusations against him. The coast guard said the ship, …

‘Who Killed Roxanne’ true-crime podcast leads to 4 arrests in decades-old cold case, police say

Four men have been arrested and charged in the 1982 rape and murder of 16-year-old Roxanne Sharp — a case that went cold for more than four decades before DNA testing and a true-crime podcast cracked it open. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. Sharp’s body was discovered on Feb. 12, 1982, dumped near the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds in Covington, Louisiana. She had been raped and strangled. Investigators had little physical evidence to work with, and for 43 years, her killers walked free. In 2023, detectives with the Louisiana State Police’s Covington field office reinterviewed witnesses and potential suspects, conducted an extensive review of the case file, gathered additional evidence and resubmitted original evidence for DNA analysis. Two years later, detectives with the LSP public affairs and cold case unit partnered with local radio host Charles Dowdy of the Northshore Media Group to produce a podcast titled “Who Killed Roxanne?” The series generated new information, leads and witness cooperation that had previously been unknown to …

UK police make eight further arrests after arson attacks on Jewish sites

UK counter-terrorism officers investigating a spate of arson attacks on Jewish and other sites in London have made eight further arrests, bringing the total number to 23, police said Tuesday. The capital’s Metropolitan Police said seven of the arrests, made in the past 48 hours, were part of “a proactive investigation into alleged conspiracy to commit arson”. Six sites, all of them Jewish save a Persian media outlet that is critical of Iran, have been targeted by arson attacks in recent weeks. While no injuries have been reported, Jewish leaders have denounced rising anti-Semitism, and police say that Iranian proxies may have been involved. “While it is believed that the intended target of this conspiracy is a venue related to the Jewish community, the specific target or venue is not known,” the force added. Detectives arrested three men – aged 24, 25 and 26 – late Sunday in Harpenden, north of London. They have since been released on bail. Officers on Monday then detained a 25-year-old man in nearby Stevenage, as well as a 26-year-old …

The news comes weeks after the 49-year-old only son of Cher and the late Allman Brothers founder Gregg Allman was arrested twice in the space of three days. Days after his initial arrest for allegedly causing a disturbance at a private school with which he had no affiliation, Allman was arrested again in Windham, New Hampshire, after he allegedly broke into a home. Cher previously filed a conservatorship in December 2023, arguing at the time that Allman could not take care of himself or “manage his own financial resources” because of alleged issues with drug abuse. Allman responded to that filing by insisting he had been “clean and sober from illicit substances for over 90 days” and Cher withdrew legal proceedings. However, following the recent arrests Cher has …

As arrests at anti-ICE protests piled up, prosecutions crumbled

The National Guard soldiers in desert camo piled out of unmarked vans in East Los Angeles last June, cordoning off East Sixth Street, a residential street lined with single family houses, and blocking a nearby road leading to an elementary school. A squad of federal agents moved in flinging flash-bang grenades — explosives designed to disorient — into a small home before storming inside. They’d come for Alejandro Orellana, a Marine Corps veteran and UPS employee accused of being a central figure in a secret confederacy of insurrectionists. A news video had shown the 30-year-old distributing water, food and face shields to people protesting the Trump administration’s immigration roundups in Los Angeles. Bill Essayli, a former state legislator who leads the federal prosecutor’s office in Los Angeles, joined the raid along with a Fox News crew. With cameras rolling, Orellana, his parents and brothers were led out in handcuffs as agents searched their home. On Fox News, Essayli, sporting a blue FBI windbreaker, hyped the arrest of Orellana, a quiet, wiry man with a long …
