Asian stocks track Wall Street tech bounce, oil eases on Middle East hope

HONG KONG: Asian stocks enjoyed a partial rebound from the previous day’s rout on Tuesday (Jun 9) as investors returned to the AI trade, while easing Middle East tensions also provided support and pushed oil prices down.  The gains across most equity markets followed a rebound on Wall Street, fuelled by a race to pick up cheaper assets following a sell-off sparked by bets on a US interest rate hike and warnings over tech firms’ valuations. News that the US economy had created more than double the number of jobs than expected in May indicated it remained in rude health but put pressure on the Federal Reserve to tighten monetary policy as it also battled surging inflation. That came after disappointing revenue forecasts from chip giant Broadcom had sparked jitters about the AI sector, which has helped drive markets to record highs this year. A plunge in tech firms in New York on Friday was followed by a similar collapse for their Asian counterparts on Monday, sending Seoul’s Kospi down more than 8 per cent. …

Hegseth urges Asian leaders to boost military spending against China : NPR

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth waits to deliver his speech at the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue summit in Singapore on Saturday. Anupam Nath/AP hide caption toggle caption Anupam Nath/AP SINGAPORE — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called on allies in Asia to ramp up military spending to counter China’s “historic military buildup” but also did not mention Taiwan in his speech on Saturday at the Shangri-La Dialogue, a key annual regional defense summit in Singapore. Hegseth’s appearance comes just over two weeks after President Donald Trump held a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing that both sides hailed as a success. Hegseth said U.S.-China relations are “better than they’ve been in many years” but that there is “rightful alarm” about China’s military activities in the region and beyond. “A Pacific dominated by any hegemon would unravel the regional balance of power and undermine the equilibrium we all seek to preserve,” Hegseth said to a room full of military, defense officials and diplomats. This is the defense secretary’s second appearance at the defense forum in Asia. …

Beyond the Stereotype: Understanding Asian Mental Health

Beyond the Stereotype: Understanding Asian Mental Health

While the Asian community is incredibly diverse in its histories, languages, cultures, and traditions, many shared experiences create a sense of mutual understanding. Many Asian Americans navigate the tension between belonging in mainstream society and honoring family and cultural values. As these values continue to evolve, balancing traditional and non-traditional expectations remains an ongoing challenge—one that often plays out within our nervous systems. Recognizing commonalities across our communities can be validating and even intergenerationally corrective, helping us examine the biases we pass on to future generations. Asian providers have an opportunity to broaden our knowledge, so that we become more culturally attuned to our clients, and help shape healthier conversations for generations to come. Cultural Considerations Jack Lam, LCSW, and founder of the Yellow Chair Collective, alongside Barbara Huong, AMFT, a therapist with the same organization, shared a few thoughts with me recently. Lam pointed out that learning the broader context and history of East Asian Americans can be beneficial for understanding clients with regard to how they think, feel, and respond to the world …

5 New Asian American Horror Books to Die For

5 New Asian American Horror Books to Die For

Horror books have been experiencing a boom for the past several years, and Asian American horror reads are no exception. Like all good horror, Asian American horror has a lot to say about what’s really scary in this world. Because, sure, monsters are terrifying. But so are lots of other things. And while Hollywood loves to cast people in the same kinds of roles as long as consumers are willing to pay to see them, Asian American horror reads deliver far more nuance and innovation than mainstream horror films tend to allow for Asian American characters. As Rena Mason points out in her essay for Nightmare Magazine on Asian women in horror, “It’s time to let the women with the long wet hair in Asian cinema and their Western remakes rest. They’re tired.” In other words, it’s high time “the Asian ‘revenge wraith’ trope” was set aside to make room for other explorations of Asian and Asian American women. The Asian American horror reads on this list will give you a taste of the creative …

Kiran Nadar Museum of Art Brings South Asian Art Survey to Christie’s London

India’s Kiran Nadar Museum of Art is taking its collection to Christie’s London this summer, though don’t expect any of its artworks to be for sale. From July 16 to August 21, the New Delhi institution will stage “The Meeting Ground,” a non-selling survey of works from its 16,000-work collection at the auction house. The show will place Indian modernists like M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, K.G. Subramanyan, and F.N. Souza, alongside contemporary South Asian artists, practitioners of Indigenous art traditions, and artists from the diaspora. Admission to the exhibition is free. New Asian American Historical Fiction for AAPI Month

New Asian American Historical Fiction for AAPI Month

May is the perfect time to discuss new and upcoming Asian American historical fiction coming out this year, and boy, is there a lot to look forward to! Asian American and Pacific Islander, or AAPI, Heritage Month is a national commemorative holiday in the United States that recognizes the important contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Considering the growing racism and anti-immigrant sentiments in the United States spearheaded by conservative groups over recent years and the rampant anti-Asian propaganda and hate surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, recognizing the long and important history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in this country feels more important than ever. Like many immigrant populations in the U.S. (including European Americans, who, I always feel it’s important to re-emphasize, are also an immigrant group in this country), the history of Asian immigration began hundreds of years ago, and many Asian Americans have been living in the United States for generations. In fact, AAPI Heritage Month was established in May exactly because the first recorded Japanese immigration to the United States occurred …

Meet Sam Houston, the new baby Asian elephant

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. On April 1, Texas’ Fort Worth Zoo welcomed  a 285-pound baby into the world. It wasn’t an April Fool’s joke—the newborn was a healthy male Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) calf, and he represents the newest member of a four-generation Fort Worth elephant family. Elephants are currently the largest terrestrial animals on earth, and they consist of three species: the Asian elephant, African savannah elephant (Loxodonta africana), and African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis). Asian elephants are a bit smaller than the other two species. On average, they weigh between 6,000 and 12,000 pounds and usually are six to 12 feet tall at the shoulder. Today they exist in limited areas in India and Southeast Asia, and they are classified as endangered in the IUCN Red List, with a decreasing population.  Sam Houston the baby elephant turns one month old Fort Worth Zoo’s calf is 36 inches tall and is the offspring of father Romeo and mother Bluebell, whose prenatal care …

UCLA Online Textbook Gives Voice to Asian American, Pacific Islander History and Cultures

UCLA Online Textbook Gives Voice to Asian American, Pacific Islander History and Cultures

Model minority. Perpetual foreigner. The centuries-old stereotypes of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders as passive bystanders in American culture and politics still persist, despite U.S. history being full of examples to the contrary. The way to change that, scholars believe, is by teaching younger generations that history. A free, digital textbook overseen by the UCLA Asian American Studies Center aims to be a high-caliber guide to help high school and college educators nationwide teach more effectively about AAPI experiences. “Foundations and Futures: Asian American and Pacific Islander Multimedia Textbook” is the culmination of years of work by 100 contributors, from curriculum developers to illustrators. “Our presence, our practices, our cultural rituals and things like that are not deemed as ‘American,’” Karen Umemoto, a co-editor and the Center’s director, told The AP exclusively before the $12 million project’s official launch Saturday. “The actual putting together of this textbook also became our fight for inclusion and represents our right to be seen, our right to speak.” The textbook covers a wide breadth of AAPI communities and their …
