Al Brikan strikes in extra time as Al-Ahli retain Asian Champions League title

JEDDAH, April 25 : Ten-man Al-Ahli retained the Asian Champions League Elite title on Saturday as Feras Al-Brikan’s extra-time strike earned the Saudi Pro League side a 1-0 win over Japan’s Machida Zelvia at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium. Matthias Jaissle’s side became only the second team to retain the trophy in the Asian Champions League era after cross-Jeddah rivals Al-Ittihad in 2005, having seen Zakaria Hawsawi sent off in the 68th minute. Al-Ahli held out despite being outnumbered to take the match into an additional 30 minutes and substitute Al-Brikan struck from close range after a Riyad Mahrez cross to give his team back-to-back titles. “It’s amazing. We’re so happy. It was difficult for us again. We like to make it difficult for ourselves. Ten against 11 is nearly impossible, I don’t know how we found the strength and the energy but we’ve done it and we’re happy,” Mahrez said. “After the red card we stuck together, we fought more, we ran more until we scored.” The win came in front of the …

Asian stocks mixed as investors weigh Mideast ceasefire doubts, fallout worries

Markets digested the latest developments, weighing the long-term implications of already lost crude supply and the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz on emerging, energy-importing countries in Asia. “The conflict appears to have moved into a prolonged standoff rather than towards a swift or durable resolution,” MUFG analysts wrote in a note. “For markets, this environment implies continued disruption to energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.” Asian currencies also came under pressure: the Indonesian rupiah weakened to 17,185 a dollar, within striking distance of its all-time low of 17,193 a piece.  The rupiah has been under sustained pressure since the Middle East war broke out in late February, losing over 2 per cent to become one of the worst-hit regional currencies. All eyes are on Bank Indonesia’s monetary policy meeting later in the day, where the central bank is expected to keep rates unchanged. “BI is not expected to face immediate pressure to tighten policy, instead prioritising financial market stability in the near term,” said Radhika Rao, senior economist at DBS Bank. “Potential …

Singapore beat Bangladesh, end Asian Cup qualifying campaign unbeaten

Singapore beat Bangladesh, end Asian Cup qualifying campaign unbeaten

In front of a crowd of about 30,000, both sides struggled to keep sustained possession early on, with clear-cut chances proving difficult to come by. The Lions looked to rely on the flanks to provide service for striker Ikhsan Fandi and Ryhan Stewart did just that with 20 minutes played, but his cross was pushed clear by Bangladesh goalkeeper Mitul Marma. And just as it looked as if the Lions were starting to look ponderous, they got their goal. A raking cross-field switch from Irfan Fandi found Glenn Kweh and while his shot was pushed clear, the onrushing Harhys slammed home for his first international goal. But the physical away side was not without threat as loose play from Singapore saw possession lost in a dangerous area. A superb block from Safuwan Baharudin saw the first attempt saved, but there were strong calls for a penalty after he appeared to have caught a Bangladesh attacker charging onto the rebound.  Referee Benjamin Abraham however, was unmoved.
