There are models, there are supermodels and then there is Kate Moss. Scouted aged 14 while waiting for a flight at New York’s JFK airport, the Londoner quickly went on to define the fashion aesthetic of the 90s. Just like nearly every other Republican has gone once Donald Trump decided to terminate their political career, John Cornyn went quietly. The senator from Texas, one of his party’s most effective fundraisers and influential legislators, devoted his losing campaign and most of the past decade in politics to a wan effort to portray himself as the president’s faithful servant. He tweeted out a photo of himself reading The Art of the Deal, introduced a bill to rename a highway the “Trump Interstate,” and even set up a campaign page reiterating his fealty that boasted, among other facts, that he had a “more than 99.2% voting record with President Trump—higher than Ted Cruz.” Ah, but that 0.8 percent made all the difference. A few months back, I made the mistake of trying to buy a product from Target, a store where products are sold — allegedly. It was barely noon, but I’d already flown halfway across the country on an early flight to visit my parents for the holidays, and spent two hours in a rental car driving from the airport. Exhaustion was setting in, but the deodorant I’d packed needed to be replaced, so I found myself roaming the body care aisles, wincing under the fluorescent lights as my patience rapidly grew thinner. It was unusually difficult to locate my brand, which I eventually realized was because it was hiding inside a plastic lock box, just in case a band of perfume-pilfering deodorant delinquents happened to breeze through town. When Jacob Elordi isn’t dressing like a designer-clad movie star, the 28-year-old actor mostly sticks to a uniform of weathered cool-guy staples. Justin Bieber has been dressing like he’s got something to prove lately. Not in a try-hard way, but in that locked-in, “this just makes sense to me” kinda way. And on the second weekend of Coachella, he pulled up in a fit that looked like it was swiped straight from the early-00s hip-hop playbook. The Targhee collection, named after a hardy American breed of sheep known for their resiliency and rather fine wool, was first launched in 2005, with the intention of being versatile, robust, and comfortable from the get-go. I’ve walked in many pairs over the years, and they remain a dependable option I’m happy to recommend, but they’ve never been the most aesthetically pleasing. But with the new Targhee Apex, they’ve gone all-in with a trail running Gorpcore look that actually works. I know that looks aren’t important when you’re scrambling over rocks and through puddles, but in the high-fashion world of the outdoors these days, pretty and practical must go hand in hand. Enough fashion chat though, because regardless of style, these are wonderful waterproof trail shoes that weigh just 0.75 pounds each.
