World Starts To “Build” Around Hormuz; Japan Buying UAE Oil Bypassing Strait As ADNOC To Spend Billion On Pipelines

World Starts To “Build” Around Hormuz; Japan Buying UAE Oil Bypassing Strait As ADNOC To Spend $55 Billion On Pipelines

Long after the Iran war is just a bookmark in the history books, one distinct consequence will persist: much of the world, at least the part that does not fall under the Chinese sphere of influence, will do everything it can to avoid the Strait of Hormuz and failing that, have a Plan B. Just like when the Biden admin weaponized the US Dollar in 2022 by booting Russia from SWIFT after the Ukraine war, and in the process started the biggest gold and bitcoin rally in history as the rest of the world parked its savings in non-USD assets, so the world’s most important oil choke point will never again be viewed again in the same way after Iran launched dozens of rockets at the ships transiting it.  This shift in perception is what James Thorne, chief market strategist of WellingtonAltus, called “Iran’s Historic Mistake“; he explains it as follows:  By weaponizing the Strait of Hormuz, Iran committed a strategic blunder of historic proportions. Tehran meant to punish America. Instead, it exposed every power built …

Sony vs. Samsung: My buying advice after testing both home theater systems

Sony vs. Samsung: My buying advice after testing both home theater systems

Kerry Wan and Jada Jones/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. When building a home theater, you’ll likely consider Samsung or Sony. Both companies offer immersive home theater solutions to upgrade your watching experience. Before choosing a company’s home theater products, consider which company’s TVs you prefer. A TV from either of these companies serves as an anchor device, and your home theater will revolve around it. Each company’s home theater products integrate with their TVs, and some features will be locked behind ecosystem walls if you mix and match manufacturers.  Also: Forget the soundbar: How I upgraded my TV audio with spare Bluetooth speakers Generally, Sony offers modular options to build over time, with a focus on a cinematic experience and tight integration with PlayStation. On the other hand, Samsung is ideal for people who have a one-and-done approach to home theater, preferring to buy one complete system and stick with it for years. Samsung is also best for people with several Samsung smart appliances in their house, as your TV can …

Just so you know, HuffPost UK may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. Buying a car is expensive. Between finance, dealership fees, road tax, maintenance, and insurance, choosing a new vehicle can be a costly decision. With the price of new cars on the rise, it makes sense that more people are opting to buy used cars each year. Over 7.8 million used cars were bought in the UK in 2025, up 2.15% from the previous year and this is only projected to rise. And while investing in a second hand car can save you thousands of pounds, it can also come with stratospheric hidden costs if you don’t properly investigate its past. With the cost of new cars constantly fluctuating, and electronic vehicles being …

After using the ,900 Motorola Razr Fold again, I’m doubling down on my buying advice

After using the $1,900 Motorola Razr Fold again, I’m doubling down on my buying advice

Cesar Cadenas/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. Just months ago, at MWC, Motorola let journalists like me go hands-on with the upcoming Razr Fold — and again at the Razr launch event in Los Angeles this week. Only this time, the company revealed everything to me, and it’s put everything into perspective. I got a few more details about the US price tag (which is still pretty high), preorder and shipping dates, and a few other new and interesting features of the Razr Fold. Overall, my impressions went from mostly positive to cautiously optimistic, given this new information. But there are still some questions to be answered. What’s new with the Razr Fold For starters, the outside screen is a 6.6-inch pOLED screen with Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. The inner screen will be a massive 8.1 inches, making it the largest in North America. It will run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor and come with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.  The cameras will be the same ones seen …

Sony vs. Bose: My buying advice after listening to flagship headphones from both brands

Sony vs. Bose: My buying advice after listening to flagship headphones from both brands

Jada Jones and Nina Raemont/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways I found Bose and Sony’s headphones to be exceptional in their own right. Bose’s option appeals more to laid-back listeners who prioritize comfort and simplicity. Sony’s option appeals to headphone enthusiasts who prioritize customization and utility. Sony’s and Bose’s latest flagship headphones have some of the best noise-canceling performance we’ve tested at ZDNET. But which one is better if you’re deciding between the two? Also: Sony just shook up the Bose rivalry with these earbuds, and I wasn’t prepared for it Having spent months testing both the Sony WH-1000XM6 and the Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2, I can confidently say there are distinct differences between the two models.  For example, if you want headphones with granular audio customization, smart features, and performance that improves the more you tweak them, you’ll appreciate Sony’s WH-1000XM6. If you want headphones that require minimal decision-making and deliver a high-performing experience without toggling many features, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) are up your alley. …

Column: Americans aren’t buying Trump’s schtick anymore

Column: Americans aren’t buying Trump’s schtick anymore

The British monarch came before Congress to jointly celebrate the 250th anniversary of the former American colonies throwing off his “five-times-great-grandfather” to become the independent United States. But the speech by King Charles III was enough to make Americans want to swap their current president, a wannabe king, for the real thing again. Just kidding, of course. Yet Charles, in his 28-minute homage on Wednesday to the two countries’ shared ideals and tenets — democracy, the rule of law and checks and balances on executive power by an independent judiciary and legislature — and his affirmation of the mutual benefits of alliances like NATO, free trade, diversity and action against climate change, delivered the sort of stirring performance that President Trump is incapable of. And not just because Trump lacks the king’s eloquence, but because he is daily attacking the very legacies that Charles honored. It took a king to remind a shamedly complicit Republican-controlled Congress that its constitutional role, drawn by America’s founders from the Magna Carta, is to ensure that U.S. governance is …

I couldn’t stop impulse buying – but these ‘buy less’ tricks helped me save hundreds | Shopping

I couldn’t stop impulse buying – but these ‘buy less’ tricks helped me save hundreds | Shopping

I’m pretty careful with money, I say as I trip over piles of Amazon Prime boxes. I’ve never really been the shopping type, I insist as I stare at drawers groaning with unworn Asos clothes. Look how much I care about the environment, I tell myself as I click “buy now” on yet another battery charger I bought to replace the one, two or five I’ve lost around the house somewhere. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. You don’t have to be a shopaholic to be drowning in stuff. All it takes is an averagely mindless approach to impulse buying, until one day your home is heaving with a personal landfill of tat. I lived a positively anti-consumer existence before online shopping came along. But when one-click, instant-delivery buying took all the effort out of it, my inner zombie consumer was unleashed. These days, I click the “buy now” button several times a week. It’s never for me, you understand, it’s for …

U.S. imposes sanctions on Chinese companies for buying Iranian oil

U.S. imposes sanctions on Chinese companies for buying Iranian oil

Hengli Petrochemical’s refining, petrochemical complex is seen at Changxing island in Dalian, Liaoning province, China July 16, 2018. Aizhu Chen | Reuters The Trump administration said on Friday it had imposed sanctions on an independent “teapot” refinery in China for buying billions of dollars’ worth of Iranian oil, as Washington and Tehran head into another round of peace talks over the weekend. The Treasury Department targeted Hengli Petrochemical (Dalian) Refinery, which it said is one of Iran’s largest customers of crude oil and petroleum products. The department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said it also imposed sanctions on about 40 shipping companies and vessels that operate as part of Iran’s shadow fleet. China has said it opposes “illegal” unilateral sanctions. On Friday, its embassy in Washington said normal trade should not be harmed and called on Washington to stop “abusing” sanctions to target Chinese companies. “We call on the U.S. to stop politicizing trade and sci-tech issues and using them as a weapon and a tool and stop abusing various kinds of sanction to hit …

The case for buying a MacBook Neo right now – especially for students

Kerry Wan/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways The MacBook Neo has been flying off shelves since it launched in March. Apple has a limited number of A18 Pro chips used for the Neo. It’s currently backlogged on Apple’s site, and that backlog could get worse through the summer. When I first tested the MacBook Neo in March, it was clear Apple had a compelling product on its hands. Fast forward a month, and consumers seem to agree. The MacBook Neo is currently backlogged on Apple’s official website, with orders for new devices not shipping until mid-May. The same may go for in-store pickup, which, depending on your location, could take just as long: some Apple Stores are citing product arrival dates of May 11 or later.  Also: After using MacBook Neo, it’s clear Windows needs to rethink its PC strategy (and fast) Apple blew through its initial launch supply, and now it is facing limited availability of its A18 Pro chips, which are not currently in production. The MacBook …

My smart home runs through this one device, and I stopped buying dedicated hubs years ago

My smart home runs through this one device, and I stopped buying dedicated hubs years ago

I’ve had a great experience with my smart speakers. Over the years, I’ve had a Google Home and a Nest Hub as I was trying to figure out what might be right for my home. But it ultimately came down to something that my wife and I found when we were unpacking boxes when we first moved in together. She had an Amazon Echo Dot that she had been given and we plugged it in to get some use out of it for setting timers and playing some music. What we didn’t realize then was that we were starting our journey towards a smart home. Years later, we have a well-automated home that runs through Amazon Alexa, which has been my favorite smart home assistant to work with. Along with that, the Amazon Echo Show 8 is my favorite smart home device that I have for many reasons. It can do so much and I feel like I’m just scratching the surface with it. Related I turned my old tablet into a smart home dashboard, …
