15 years since a deadly tornado brought Joplin, Mo. together, kindness carries on : NPR

In the aftermath of the tornado, thousands of volunteers came to help Joplin from around the country. Many wrote messages of hope on this tornado-damaged house, and later, Joplin residents wrote a thank-you message to the volunteers. FEMA hide caption toggle caption FEMA Nanda Nunnelly had just come home from a weekend out of town when a massive, multi-vortex tornado ripped through Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. The sky, she says, had a sickly green tinge. When the tornado sirens went off, she jumped in a closet with her husband and dog. “ Within just seconds… it was so loud that it was quiet,” remembers Nunnelly. While crouched in the closet, she wondered if the 200 mph winds would take her, and she started praying. “If I’m dying, dear God, please don’t let it hurt,’” she remembers thinking. Nunelly survived that day, but her house was destroyed, and a third of the city’s population was displaced. The tornado, recorded at three-quarters of a mile wide, was one of the deadliest in recorded U.S. history, taking …

Red meat once helped human evolution but now carries serious risks

Red meat once helped human evolution but now carries serious risks

Red meat has long occupied a near-mythic place in the story of human evolution. It is often cast as the food that helped make us human, feeding bigger brains, stronger bodies, and more complex societies. But a sweeping new review in The Quarterly Review of Biology argues that the story no longer ends there. The same food source that may once have helped early humans survive is now tied to chronic disease, environmental damage, and a global food system whose scale looks nothing like anything in the human past. In the review, Juston Jaco, Kalyan Banda, Ajit Varki, and Pascal Gagneux from the University of California, San Diego pull together evidence from archaeology, anthropology, nutrition, epidemiology, and molecular biology. Their conclusion is not that meat was a mistake. It is that modern red meat consumption has drifted far from its original biological and ecological setting. “The nature, scale, and context of red meat consumption today differ drastically from those of our evolutionary past,” the authors write. As Homo sapiens increasingly relied on animal-derived foods—whether hunted …

Pope Leo hits out at Iran war days after clash with Trump as he reveals item he carries | World | News

Pope Leo has ended his trip to Africa (Image: Getty) Pope Leo shared again his views on the war in Iran, just days after Donald Trump criticised him. The pontiff warned the US and Israeli bombing campaign has created a “chaotic situation for the global economy” and left “a whole population in Iran, of innocent people, which is suffering because of this war.” Highlighting the human cost of the conflict, the 70-year-old revealed he carries a photo of a Lebanese Muslim boy who was killed in the war. The child had held a sign welcoming the pope during his visit to Lebanon at the end of last year. Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane as he returned from an 11-day visit to Africa, Leo said: “As a pastor, I cannot be in favour of war. I would like to encourage all to make efforts to look for answers that come from a culture of peace and not from a place of hate and division.” He described the situation as “very complex,” pointing to stalled …

Instead, the 33-year-old actor, whose star has risen rapidly, expressed a clear preference for portraying a villain. He told Radio Times: “I’d rather come in and do the villain. The man teasing Bond, that’s more me.” Keoghan elaborated that while it was “nice to see your name go up there,” the role of 007 inherently carries “a lot of weight and pressure.” The Dublin-born talent, celebrated for compelling performances in critically acclaimed films such as Saltburn (2023) and The Banshees Of Inisherin (2022), is also set to appear in the forthcoming Peaky Blinders film, The Immortal Man. Keoghan’s candid remarks arrive amid fervent speculation over who will …

Trump’s Iran gamble carries a political cost – POLITICO

Trump’s Iran gamble carries a political cost – POLITICO

For one, Trump and his aides have cited many different objectives: deposing the regime, ensuring Iran never has nuclear weapons, destroying the country’s missile capabilities, vanquishing its navy, ending support for its proxies and terrorism, exacting revenge for past attacks killing Americans, as well as ensuring Iran can never project force beyond its borders. All these constitute a tall order, to say the least. Regime change, for one, is hard to achieve from the air, and yet it seems Washington has no intention of deploying ground troops to depose Iran’s regime, maintain order and assist a new one in taking over. And though airpower can do a lot to degrade and destroy the country’s nuclear program, missile capability and military in the short run, those are a means to an end. What political objective would be served by effectively disarming Iran? What would constitute success for the U.S.? And how much force would be needed to achieve it? On this, the administration and the president have been silent. A key part of that strategy, Pete …

Pakistan Carries Out Airstrikes Inside Afghanistan as ‘Open War’ on Border Continues

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s military, backed by artillery and air power, struck more military installations deep inside Afghanistan overnight after Pakistan said it was in “open war” with its eastern neighbor. Pakistan on Saturday claimed more than 330 Afghan forces had been killed since fighting erupted Thursday night during a broad Afghan cross-border attack into Pakistan. Afghanistan rejected the figures as false. The casualty figures provided by either side could not be independently confirmed. The fighting was in response to Pakistani airstrikes in Afghanistan last Sunday. Pakistan said it was targeting the outlawed Pakistani Taliban, or TTP. The group is separate but closely allied with Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban. Afghanistan, however, said only civilians were killed in Sunday’s airstrike. After the Afghan attack, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif declared Friday: “Our patience has now run out. Now it is open war between us.” Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Saturday that more than 331 Afghan forces had been killed and over 500 others wounded during the ongoing military strikes in Afghanistan. Pakistan destroyed 102 Afghan …

King Charles just wore father Prince Philip’s jacket from the 50s as ‘the show carries on’

King Charles was seen leaving his church in Gloucestershire on Sunday, 22 February, putting on a brave face during this difficult time for the British royal family, but it seems that he also used his clothing to keep the simpler times close to heart. The monarch was seen walking beside the vicar, wearing a blue shirt with a navy and red tie, but it was his beige overcoat that especially caught our attention, as it’s actually a piece with some history in the family. King Charles wearing his father’s coat in 2023 Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s son has worn the coat on multiple occasions in the past, including to the Palm Sunday service in 2023 in Gloucestershire, and it’s a sweet way of keeping his father’s memory close to his heart. The late Duke of Edinburgh wore his coat on many occasions, including several public engagements such as an appearance at the Badminton Horse Trials with his wife in 1956, meaning that the coat is at least 70 years old.
