Beth Rigby: Why PM’s China trip carries real consequence – including for you at home | Politics News

Sir Keir Starmer’s January has been the stuff of nightmares. It kicked off with the crisis over Greenland and rift with Donald Trump – and was followed by a dose of psychodrama over the Labour leadership courtesy of Andy Burnham and that unwanted by-election. This week will be another high-stakes one for the prime minister as he heads to China to look for deeper trade ties against the backdrop of a volatile US and domestic resistance to Beijing at home. “Like it or not, China matters for the UK,” he declared ahead of the trip. “As one of the world’s biggest economic players, a strategic and consistent relationship with them is firmly in our national interest. “That does not mean turning a blind eye to the challenges they pose – but engaging even where we disagree.” Read more from Sky News:What’s on the table in PM-Xi talks? Kane double carries 10-man Bayern past Union Saint-Gilloise and into knockout stage

MUNICH, Germany, Jan 21 : Bayern Munich top scorer Harry Kane struck twice in three minutes to carry his team to a 2-0 victory over Belgium’s Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League on Wednesday and book their ticket for the knockout stage with a game to spare. Man-of-the-match Kane headed in at the near post from a Michael Olise corner in the 52nd and added another goal from a 55th-minute penalty after he was brought down, to end a rare three-game goal drought in the competition. The England captain, who now leads the scorers’ list with seven goals, could have sealed his hat-trick in the 80th minute but hammered his second penalty on to the crossbar. The hosts were down to 10 men from the 64th minute after defender Kim Min-jae was sent off with a second booking. Bayern are in second spot in the league phase on 18 points with one game left to play, and are guaranteed a top-eight finish that leads to the knockout stage. The top eight teams advance to the …

Trump’s CIA strike on Venezuela keeps options open, but carries risks

The CIA’s recent drone strike on a Venezuelan port facility keeps President Trump’s options open in the country as he intensifies his pressure campaign, effectively expanding U.S. attacks onto land without committing the U.S. to an invasion of Venezuela. However, the commander in chief’s disclosure of the covert operations during a radio interview last week… Source link

Comet 3I/ATLAS from beyond solar system carries key molecule for life

Comet 3I/ATLAS from beyond solar system carries key molecule for life

Comet 3I/ATLAS is only the third known visitor to our solar system from elsewhere International Gemini Observatory/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/Shadow the Scientist; J. Miller & M. Rodriguez (Intl Gemini Observatory/NSF NOIRLab), T.A. Rector (University of Alaska Anchorage/NSF NOIRLab), M. Zamani (NSF NOIRLab) The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is belching out carbon-rich chemical compounds at higher rates than almost any other comet in our solar system. One of these compounds is methanol, a key ingredient in prebiotic chemistry that hasn’t been seen in other interstellar objects. 3I/ATLAS, which is only the third visitor to our solar system from elsewhere in the galaxy, appears to be quite unlike any comet from our own galactic neighbourhood. As it travelled towards the sun, an envelope of water vapour and gas rapidly grew around it, which also contained much greater amounts of carbon dioxide than we see in typical solar system comets. The comet’s light also appeared to be much redder than is typical, indicating a possible unusual surface chemistry, and it began releasing its gases while relatively far away from the sun, an …
