Cuba Ex-President Raúl Castro Makes First Appearance Since US Charges to Celebrate Birthday

HAVANA (AP) — Raúl Castro, Cuba’s low-profile former president and revolutionary guerrilla, appeared in public for the first time since being indicted by the United States for his alleged role in the 1996 downing of two civilian aircraft, official video released Saturday showed. Castro’s celebration of his 95th birthday with top officials and military leaders at the Ministry of Interior in Havana on late Friday offered Cuba’s socialist government an opportunity to close ranks and project defiance as the Trump administration escalates its pressure campaign on the fuel-starved island. State TV broadcast footage of Castro, clad in his olive-green military uniform, entering a packed theater to a standing ovation, followed by his grandson and bodyguard, Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez, and Cuban President Miguel Diáz-Canel. Diáz-Canel delivered an effusive tribute to the “heroism and dignity” displayed by Castro and his late brother, the central figure of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro. He praised Raúl Castro, who served as defense minister of Cuba for nearly 50 years, for his “courage and loyalty (that) made him a target from …

Hegseth Invokes Immigration and ‘Invasion’ in D-Day Speech in France

PARIS (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used a D-Day anniversary speech on Saturday to appear to link immigration by sea to the wartime liberation of Europe, warning that the freedom won by Allied troops could prove temporary if leaders failed to defend it. Hegseth, speaking at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer in northwestern France during commemorations for the 82nd anniversary of the June 6, 1944, landings, said that today, “different European beaches are stormed by different dangerous ideologies.” “Beaches in Spain and Italy and Greece and Bulgaria. Boats and men arrive,” he said. “When will European capitals do something about that invasion? Or is it too late?” he added. “I pray not, and I believe not.” On Saturday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office condemned U.S. Vice President JD Vance for blaming immigration for the killing of Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old British student stabbed to death in Southampton, even though both Nowak and his killer were British. Trump Faces New Republican Resistance in Congress as Midterm Pressures Build

(Corrects paragraph 15 to say Trump has appointed Pulte as acting director; corrects spelling of Blanche in paragraph 20) WASHINGTON, June 6 (Reuters) – Donald Trump is facing widening opposition within his own party as Republican lawmakers in Congress, long reluctant to defy him, are showing a greater willingness to break ranks with the U.S. president. Just over the past week, multiple factions of Republicans in the Senate and House of Representatives have stepped forward to rebuke his war against Iran, reject $1 billion in funding tied to his White House ballroom, force a retreat on ‌his $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund and block his legislation on domestic spying.  The ‌House also defied Trump by passing a bill on Thursday to provide aid to Ukraine and impose new sanctions on Russia, a measure that seems destined for a veto by the president. Republicans and Democrats are skeptical that Trump faces an actual revolt. But a growing coalition of Republicans is showing a willingness to break with him, including those Trump has personally helped to drum out …

South Korean Protesters Keep Calling for Re-Run of Election After Ballot Shortage

SEOUL, June 6 (Reuters) – Protesters outside a ballot-counting site in South Korea on Saturday rallied for a second day, demanding a re-run of local elections held earlier this week. Around 10,000 citizens were estimated ‌to have gathered at ‌the SK Olympic Handball Stadium as of 5:30 p.m. (0830 GMT), where votes were counted from Wednesday’s elections to pick mayors and local government officials and assembly members, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing an unofficial police estimate. Representatives at Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency were not immediately reached by Reuters to confirm the estimates. The protests follow a ballot shortage that prevented some eligible voters from casting their ballots across the country, prompting the resignation of the head of the National Election Commission. Fifty of 14,300 polling stations ran out of ballots and voting was temporarily suspended at 22 polling stations due to delays in receiving supplies, according to the election commission. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said in a televised speech that the ballot shortage was intolerable and a violation of the right to vote. He demanded …

Pope Leo XIV Acknowledges Stiff Competition With Bad Bunny in Spain and Weighs in on Soccer Rivalry

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) — Pope Leo XIV ackowledged Saturday he is competing for attention with another VIP in Madrid this weekend, and the pontiff declared his preference in Spain’s biggest soccer rivalry. Puerto Rican sensation Bad Bunny is performing two shows of his 10-concert Spanish tour in the capital. Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane before his arrival in Madrid on Saturday morning, Leo acknowledged the appeal of Bad Bunny when he referred to anecdotal reports of a newfound spiritual awakening, especially among young people in Spain. The American pope said he understood that young adults are sensing a lack of meaning in their lives and mused that his visit might help “awaken” something in them. “If they are confronted with the question ‘Do you want to go see Bad Bunny or do you want to go to see the pope?’ I think many will see Bad Bunny,” Leo said. “But I think there will also be a few here to see the pope. And that says something, you know.” He’s wasn’t …

Ukraine Targets St. Petersburg Again After Putin Rejects Zelenskyy’s Offer for Direct Talks

Residents of St. Petersburg were told not to leave their homes after a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack targeted Russia’s second-largest city Saturday morning, underscoring Kyiv’s growing ability to hit deep inside Russia. The attack came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin refused an offer to meet his Ukrainian counterpart. St. Petersburg Gov. Alexander Beglov said three people sustained minor injuries in the attack. He advised residents not to go outside and warned of possible disruptions to mobile internet service, while regional Gov. Alexander Drozdenko said 141 drones were shot down over the surrounding Leningrad region in what he called an “unprecedented attack.” Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defenses shot down 376 Ukrainian drones. “Last night, our drones covered a distance of about 1,000 kilometers to the St. Petersburg region — to the enemy navy’s arsenals and a base in Kronstadt,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X, adding that drones also hit an oil depot in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region. The renewed attack on St. Petersburg is the latest embarrassing blow to Putin’s …

French National Gets 20 Years in Mali Over Alleged Destabilisation Plot

BAMAKO, June 6 (Reuters) – A French national accused by Mali’s military-led government of involvement in a plot to destabilise the country last year has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, a person familiar with the matter ‌said on Friday, in a ‌case that has strained ties between Bamako and Paris. • Yann Vezilier is expected to serve his sentence in Mali following a conviction handed down late on Thursday, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media. • Mali’s government announced the arrest of Vezilier last August, along with two Malian generals, accusing him of acting on behalf of French intelligence services to mobilise political actors, civil society figures and military officers against Assimi Goita’s government. • France’s foreign ministry denied the accusations then, saying they were “unfounded” and that Vezilier’s arrest was in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. • France reiterated the denial following his sentencing. “Our agent was carrying out a security cooperation mission and in no form was …

Study Warns Biodiversity Loss Could Trigger Wave of Debt Crises

Study Warns Biodiversity Loss Could Trigger Wave of Debt Crises

LONDON, June 5 (Reuters) – Financial markets are underestimating the economic risks of biodiversity loss, potentially exposing countries to sovereign debt crises and sharply higher borrowing costs, according to research published on Friday. The study, led by economists from the Universities of Sussex, Sheffield and Heriot-Watt, presented what they described as the world’s ‌first biodiversity-adjusted sovereign credit ratings model. It ‌said existing ratings frameworks fail to incorporate environmental degradation, leaving some $83 trillion of global assets vulnerable to mispricing. Using an adjusted version of S&P Global’s ratings methodology, the researchers estimated that even a partial collapse of key ecosystems – including wild pollinators, marine fisheries and tropical forests – could increase annual global sovereign debt interest payments by $162 billion. “Financial markets are effectively blind to nature-related risks,” said the University of Sussex’s Matthew Agarwala. “As biodiversity loss undermines economic performance, it becomes harder for countries to service their debt, raising borrowing costs and fiscal strain.” Ecosystems underpin the global economy through “ecosystem services” like crop pollination and seafood production. Partial disruption to these could …
