Gianni Infantino, Trump’s compliant underling in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup

Gianni Infantino, Trump’s compliant underling in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup

As its name suggests, the FIFA World Cup is meant to be a universal event, a major popular celebration – at least in theory. The 2026 edition, scheduled from June 11 to July 19 in Mexico, Canada and above all the United States – where 78 of the 104 matches will be played – seems to be taking a very different path. Donald Trump’s domestic and foreign policies have complicated preparations for the tournament and have generated widespread anxiety about how it will be held. Within this context, the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, has been notably silent and has withstood the MAGA leader’s decisions without protest –as if he were a powerless bystander to the preparations for an event he is supposedly overseeing. The FIFA chief has repeatedly promoted this as the “greatest and most inclusive show on the planet.” Yet he has not voiced concern over the US administration’s visa restrictions – an outright ban for Iran and Haiti, and partial bans for Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal – which will prevent many supporters …

LA County is giving away free health code compliant food carts to help sidewalk vendors operate legally

LA County is giving away free health code compliant food carts to help sidewalk vendors operate legally

Los Angeles County is moving to reshape sidewalk vending by removing one of its biggest barriers: the cost of meeting health rules. The Sidewalk Vending Cart Program, led by the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity and the City of Los Angeles Economic and Workforce Development Department, will invest $2.8 million to give away more than 280 food carts. Each cart meets California health code standards and allows vendors to operate legally. The program launched in August 2024 as part of a broader county effort to formalize sidewalk vending after years of shifting rules. Since 2018, state and local laws have steadily changed how street food businesses operate. Those changes have often raised costs for vendors trying to stay compliant. County officials say the new requirements, while meant to protect public health, have priced many people out of the legal system. The cart program is designed to close that gap.
