Politics Home | Ed Davey: Hillary Clinton Told Me To “Stand Up To Bullies” Like Reform UK

9 min read1 hr Former US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton privately urged Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey to “stand up to bullies” like Reform UK during a recent visit to London. In an interview with PoliticsHome ahead of the 7 May local elections, Davey revealed that he had a “long chat” with the former US secretary of state when she spoke at a business reception in the capital late last year. “We talked about how we need to fight Reform in the way they need to fight Donald Trump, and she gave me some choice advice, which I’m not going to repeat because that would be unfair on her,” he said. When pressed, he added: “She said you have to be very strong and stand up to bullies and don’t cave in and cosy up to them. She didn’t say she was criticising Keir Starmer, but I think the approach we [the Lib Dems] have taken, and the approach that someone like the Liberal Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, has taken, is the sort of …

Politics Home | Rail And Bus Fares Should Be Cut To Protect Public From Iran Petrol Spike, Says Ed Davey

Ed Davey called for emergency 10p fuel duty cut (Alamy) 3 min read22 min Ed Davey has called for the government to reduce public transport fares to protect people from cost-of-living pressures triggered by the Iran war. Speaking at a press conference in London on Thursday morning, the Liberal Democrat leader said: “The people of Britain didn’t start this war. They didn’t cheer it on, but they are paying the price for it every single day.” Davey called for rail fares to be reduced by 10 per cent and the cap on bus fares to be lowered from £3 to £1 in a bid to “keep people moving”. The ongoing war in Iran is putting major pressure on global energy prices. This is largely down to a sharp fall in traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important trading routes, as a result of Iranian threats to attack passing ships. This shipping lane is responsible for a large share of the world’s oil and gas. The European Commission has this week encouraged people to …

Nick Robinson Slams Ed Davey Over Past Prince Andrew Praise

Nick Robinson Slams Ed Davey Over Past Prince Andrew Praise

Nick Robinson skewered Ed Davey over his past praise for the “excellent job” the then Prince Andrew was doing as the UK’s trade envoy. The Lib Dem leader was left embarrassed during an excruciating grilling on Radio 4′s Today programme. Davey is forcing a vote in the House of Commons today which could force the government to publish all documents relating to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s appointment and performance as trade envoy. He said: “I think we’ve seen too often in the past that people, because of their title or their friends or whatever, have not been properly held to account. “The rules of the House of Commons have prevented, and Speakers have overseen this over the centuries, prevented MPs from criticising members of the Royal Family and sometimes even mentioning them, and that really seems old fashioned and is the wrong thing to do.” But Robinson told him: “It’s what you did when you were a minister though, isn’t it?” Davey then admitted praising the job the then Prince Andrew did as UK trade envoy during …

Gut check: are at-home microbiome tests a way to ‘hack your health’ or simply a waste? | Melissa Davey

Gut check: are at-home microbiome tests a way to ‘hack your health’ or simply a waste? | Melissa Davey

For a few hundred dollars you can put your poo in an envelope and post it off to a laboratory. In return you’ll get a report (sometimes generated by AI) outlining your food sensitivities, metabolic fitness, and what pathogens or fungi you’re harbouring. These at-home gut microbiome tests or “GI mapping” kits are frequently promoted by influencers as a way to “hack your health” and “take control” through analysing some of the trillions of organisms that live in your digestive tract. But how much can an at-home gut test really tell you, and are they actually worth doing? Even experts struggle to interpret at-home microbiome tests Prof Rupert Leong, a gastroenterologist and microbiome researcher based at Macquarie university hospital, is increasingly seeing patients alarmed by gut microbiome reports they don’t understand. Leong said depending on what is being analysed, gut microbiome testing can be “very powerful and accurate” in detecting microbial markers. But interpreting what those markers mean for an individual remains a major challenge, and different labs vary in their methodology, leading to differing …
