The looming crisis putting Europe’s energy security at risk  – POLITICO

With a smaller proportion of oil and gas supplies likely to be compliant, less availability means there’s a real risk this looming crisis will affect energy affordability for households and businesses alike. Remember, these rules have nothing to do with lowering levels of methane, which the legislation does not demand until 2030, but are about adhering to measurement, reporting, certification and verification standards for which neither the European Commission nor member states have done the work to establish in time for implementation.    With a smaller proportion of oil and gas supplies likely to be compliant, less availability means there’s a real risk this looming crisis will affect energy affordability for households and businesses alike.    Consumers will ultimately bear the burden through anticipated higher gas and/or fuel prices; Wood Mackenzie say gasoline and diesel prices could increase by 24 percent and 16 percent respectively. The Commission knows this but appears unwilling to make the necessary changes to reduce the cost burden on its citizens.  High energy costs would further damage the competitiveness of Europe’s energy intensive industries like steel, chemicals and manufacturing — leading the bloc further down …

Keir Starmer confirms huge new change for UK petrol and diesel drivers | Politics | News

An increase in fuel duty planned for September has been scrapped. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told MPs the 5p per litre fuel duty cut introduced by the Conservative government in March 2022 would be extended for the rest of the year. Rates were previously planned to increase from September, gradually returning to previous levels over the next five years. Iran’s restrictions on tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz means the average price of a litre of petrol and diesel at UK forecourts is 26p and 44p respectively more expensive than before the conflict started on February 28. Steve Gooding, director of motoring research charity the RAC Foundation, said: “Although today’s news on fuel duty won’t have the immediate effect of bringing forecourt prices down, at least it shows that ministers have registered the financial pain caused by rampant pump prices for individuals and for business. “Since the start of the Iran conflict drivers have already paid a war premium of a staggering £3 billion in inflated fuel prices, half a billion of which …

Cuba says oil and diesel supplies have run dry under U.S. sanctions

Yamil Lage | Afp | Getty Images Cuba has run out of oil and diesel, its energy minister said on Wednesday, as an ongoing U.S. blockade starves the island nation of fuel. “The sum of the different types of fuel: crude oil, fuel oil, of which we have absolutely none; diesel, of which we have absolutely none … the only thing we have is gas from our wells, where production has grown,” Cuban Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy said on state media, according to broadcaster the BBC. A U.S. blockade has blocked shipments of oil into the country since January, prompting blackouts lasting up to 22 hours a day in parts of the Cuban capital Havana. De la O Levy said the country’s predicament is “extremely tense.” According to Reuters news agency, which has reporters on the ground in Havana, protests broke out in the city on Wednesday evening, with hundreds crowding the streets, blocking roads with garbage and …

Speaking after the movie’s midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night, Diesel fought back tears as he reflected on his relationship with Walker, who died in a car crash in 2013 at the age of 40. “It’s so hard for me to watch it because there’s so many moments in this movie that you see, that I see differently,” Diesel told the audience inside the Grand Lumière theatre, according to Variety. “The scene that you see, I see the moment Pablo told me he had a one-year-old daughter.” Diesel has long referred to Walker by the nickname “Pablo”. Vin Diesel Tears Up About Paul Walker at Fast & Furious Cannes Screening

In a Cannes lacking in star power, the Fast & Furious 25th anniversary screening at the Palais was a hot ticket, with Vin Diesel on hand to give a tear-filled tribute to the late Paul Walker. It was nearing midnight, but the Croisette was busy with the area around the Grand Lumiere theater completely packed with onlookers. The screening itself was not the usual black tie affair; instead, Universal asked guests to adhere to a “casual chic” dress code. For his part, Diesel stepped onto the carpet in a bedazzled suit jacket that was emblazoned with the words ”Fast Forever” in rhinestones. Vin Diesel Breaks Into Tears Watching Paul Walker In ‘Fast & Furious’ Screening

The screening played to an energetic crowd, who applauded every time a familiar face would appear onscreen. But as the story went on, the appearance of Walker added an emotional weight to the experience. Walker, who died at the age of 40 in a car crash, had such a presence on the screen, and his career was cut short far too soon. When the credits rolled, Diesel didn’t take his eyes off the screen. He was pensive and still. When the lights finally came up, Diesel was, for once, stunned into silence. He was overcome with emotion, and stood silently for a long moment in time. “I can’t even believe you want to see me fucking cry,” he said. He hugged his castmates, and Rodriguez also had tears streaming down her face. “I can’t see any of you after I see my brother. It was on the script at first that this blonde haired, blue eyed guy would be a brother to me,” he said of Walker. “After every premiere, he’d sit with me – …

4 Fast & Furious TV shows confirmed by Vin Diesel in major expansion

Four TV shows set in the Fast and Furious universe are in development at Peacock, franchise star Vin Diesel has announced. The long-running movie franchise, which began in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious, is set to come to an end with the upcoming 12th instalment, Fast Forever, which is slated to be released in 2028. But while the Fast and Furious saga is ending on the big screen, it’ll soon be getting the TV treatment, according to Diesel. Speaking during NBCUniversal’s Upfronts presentation in New York City on Monday (11 May), the actor, who has played Dominic Toretto in each Fast and Furious movie, said: “For the last decade, we have realised that the fans have wanted more.” He continued: “They wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories. And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space that Fallon has mastered.” He added: “And I had to wait till it was right… It became right when Donna Langley started to oversee it all, because …

UK drivers can get £10 off from Tesco pumps if you’re with this one bank | UK | News

UK drivers can get £10 off from Tesco pumps if you’re with this one bank | UK | News

UK lender Barclays and supermarket Tesco have launched a joint cashback offer as Britons face the highest diesel prices since the start of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. The initiative comes amid soaring fuel prices in part caused by the unresolved conflict in the Middle East. The US and Israel have carried out joint strikes on several key Iranian sites since February 28. Iran retaliated by striking sites across the Middle East and closing the critical Strait of Hormuz trade route through which 20% of global oil is traded. The US and Iran have agreed on a short-term ceasefire, but the closure of the strait remains. The US has also imposed a blockade on Irainian ports in the strait in a bid to strangle the Iranian economy, force the closure to be lifted and pressure long-term peace negotiations. Fuel prices flatlined over the weekend for drivers across the country, the Mirror reports. Figures from motoring group the RAC found national average for unleaded stood at 157.17p a litre on Monday, with diesel 189.23p. Both …

Rural communities demand help taking up green diesel | Politics | News

Nearly two million homes could save tens of thousands of pounds by using a renewable diesel instead of switching to heat pumps, it has been suggested. Dozens of villagers in Cornwall’s Kehelland are among the 1.7 million UK residents living off grid who could benefit from Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a renewable, synthetic, paraffinic diesel fuel made from waste fats, vegetable oils and animal fat. TV presenter Fern Britton is among residents of Padstow, in Cornwall, who has made minor tweaks to her existing boiler to heat her home using HVO. She said: “I am an HVO user and I love it. I loved that my existing boiler was so swiftly adapted to take HVO, and that we are not in the house pumping extra carbon into the atmosphere.” Heating and cooking industry trade body OFTEC said the rollout of the biofuel, starting with a 20% HVO blend, could deliver the equivalent carbon savings of 347,000 heat pump installations. How the EU’s mega energy crisis plan will — and won’t — help – POLITICO

Coordination is also an issue. While groups are regularly convened to discuss supply issues, most real coordination takes place bilaterally between the Commission and countries, according to two energy officials involved in such discussions. It’s no surprise one energy minister in a meeting earlier this month went so far as to call for a WhatsApp group to share information about supplies, and that the EU is looking into reviving a controversial effort to coordinate gas purchases. Earlier this week, the Netherlands went out on its own, launching emergency measures and announcing an additional release of oil stocks — bypassing the EU’s own glacial effort to coordinate the release. The draft of Wednesday’s proposals still broadly hews to the line set out by the EU executive as the war got going, focusing on providing better incentives for the green transition, including reduced grid tariffs and murky commitments to mobilize green funding. But these provisions have proved controversial, too, with some countries, especially in the rich North, arguing that expanding subsidies risks distorting the EU’s single market …
