For Tory Burch, a 20-year fashion career is a sport driven by endurance, discipline and grit

For Tory Burch, a 20-year fashion career is a sport driven by endurance, discipline and grit

Clarke wears Tory Burch multi screw heeled sandals and Gemini Link pendant necklaces. This story is part of Image’s May Momentum issue, which looks at art as a sport and sport as an art. It’s 2 p.m. on a quintessentially balmy Los Angeles afternoon when I spot fashion designer Tory Burch in the lobby of the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel. She’s wearing oversize sunglasses, a crisp collared shirt, an even crisper pleated navy skirt and leopard-print pumps. I start walking over to introduce myself, but a fan gets there first. This would happen several times during our meeting at the hotel — wherever Burch goes, a small flock of admirers form. Burch is in town for the Fashion Trust U.S. Awards, where she was recognized with the designer of the year award. Ever since she took back creative control of her brand about six years ago, Tory Burch is back at the center of the American fashion zeitgeist. Compared to the resort-ready tunics and preppy Reva flats that embodied Tory 1.0 in the 2000s, Tory …

Sally Field says Robin Williams was ‘driven mad’ by her attitude on Mrs Doubtfire set

The Chris Columbus-directed family classic starred Williams as an actor who disguises himself as an elderly Scottish female housekeeper to continue seeing his children, after he and his wife (played by Field) decide to separate. During an appearance this week on Stephen Colbert’s US talk show, Field recalled that she didn’t find Williams funny while working with him on the film, and that it bothered him. “I would never laugh, ever,” Field said. “And everybody else was laughing and carrying on.” She said that Williams prided himself on making his colleagues laugh, which only increased his frustration. “It drove him mad, actually,” Field added. “It wasn’t funny. It just wasn’t funny. Robin was always trying something different …

ADL Reports a Sharp Drop in US Antisemitic Incidents in 2025, Driven by a Steep Fall on Campuses

ADL Reports a Sharp Drop in US Antisemitic Incidents in 2025, Driven by a Steep Fall on Campuses

NEW YORK (AP) — The number of antisemitic incidents in the United States tallied by the Anti-Defamation League declined sharply in 2025 — the first drop in five years — due in part to what the ADL said was a dramatic decrease of incidents on college campuses. The ADL tallied 1,694 antisemitic incidents on U.S. college campuses in 2024, after pro-Palestinian and anti-Zionist student protests proliferated due mostly to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. That figure fell by 66% in 2025, to 583, as many colleges and universities — under pressure from President Donald Trump’s administration — took steps to curb such protests. With the drop in on-campus incidents a major factor, the ADL’s latest annual audit — released Wednesday — says there were 6,274 incidents of antisemitic assaults, harassment and vandalism overall in 2025. That’s down 33% from the record-high 9,354 incidents counted for 2024. The states with the most antisemitic incidents in 2025 were New York (1,160), California (817) and New Jersey (687), the ADL says. The ADL’s methodology in tallying such incidents …

Google Maps vs. Waze: I’ve driven with the two best navigation apps, and one is much better

Google Maps vs. Waze: I’ve driven with the two best navigation apps, and one is much better

When should you use Waze over Google Maps? If you care most about avoiding traffic, hazards, and speed traps, Waze is your app. It’s faster at rerouting and more focused on drivers. But if you need a navigation app that will give you oodles of information about businesses, parking, nearby things to do, and landmarks, and one that works across transit types, travel modes, and vehicles, Google Maps is the way to go. Also: You can turn off Gemini in Gmail, Photos, Chrome, and more – here’s how Here’s a quick decision tree if you’re on the fence about which app to use and when. Use Waze if… You’re driving and want the fastest possible route. You love seeing live, detailed road alerts (speed traps, hazards, cops). You want hands-free hazard reporting while driving. You enjoy quirky features (fun voices, avatars). You don’t need walking, biking, or transit directions. Use Google Maps if… You take public transit, walk, or bike. The gender friendship gap is driven primarily by white men, not a universal difference across groups

The gender friendship gap is driven primarily by white men, not a universal difference across groups

For years, researchers have claimed that men’s friendships are shallower and less emotionally supportive than women’s, a pattern called the “gender friendship gap.” But new research challenges how universal that really is. Published in Sex Roles, the study finds that the gap is largely driven by white men specifically, not men as a whole. Much of the work on the gender friendship gap has relied on predominantly white, middle-class samples, which raises an important question: do these patterns actually apply across different racial and socioeconomic groups? Researcher Emily C. Fox revisited this assumption by taking an intersectional approach, examining how gender and ethnoracial identity jointly shape friendship experiences. Drawing on prior research suggesting that social context, marginalization, and cultural norms influence how friendships are formed and maintained, the author questioned whether the “gap” reflects a universal gender difference or whether it is concentrated within specific groups. The study used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 cohort, a large, nationally representative U.S. sample tracked over time. Fox focused on respondents who, in 2002, …

The “femme fatale” might be a universal myth driven by the fear of romantic deception

The “femme fatale” might be a universal myth driven by the fear of romantic deception

A recent study published in the journal Social Sciences has found that stories about dangerous, attractive women are almost universal across different cultures. These cautionary tales suggest that men tend to fear the risks of emotional attachment and heartbreak just as much as they are drawn to physical beauty. Ultimately, this research indicates that the famous “femme fatale” character stems from human evolutionary psychology rather than simply local cultural attitudes. William Jankowiak, a professor of anthropology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, conducted this research to understand why the concept of the dangerous woman appears so frequently in human history. Jankowiak is also the author of several books, including the 2023 release Illicit Monogamy: Inside a Mormon Fundamentalist Community and the 2026 book Polygamy: The Basics. He wanted to see if these “femme fatale” narratives act as warnings about the evolutionary risks of choosing an untrustworthy partner. “I’ve long been interested in human universals, which led me to evolutionary approaches to attraction and mating,” Jankowiak explained. “If men are widely attracted to youthful women, …

Estrogen Patch Shortages Likely Driven By Empowered Women Seeking Relief, Expert Says

Estrogen Patch Shortages Likely Driven By Empowered Women Seeking Relief, Expert Says

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay ReporterMONDAY, April 27, 2026 (HealthDay News) — A new generation of empowered women could be driving the estrogen patch shortages now bedeviling the United States, the medical director of The Menopause Society told HealthDay TV. “I think it’s that women and clinicians and people in general are talking about menopause much more so now than in the past, which is a good thing,” said Dr. Stephanie Faubion, who is also director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Women’s Health. “This is a different generation than the baby boomers who really didn’t talk about things like menopause in public,” she said. “The Gen Xers and the first of the millennials are now in the age range where they would start to experience symptoms, and hearing that there’s nothing that can be done for their symptoms is not acceptable to this generation and you got to love it. “So, they’re not only asking for answers, they’re crowdsourcing answers and using social media to do so,” Faubion said. “They’re educated. A lot of them …

Marked-up Mac minis flood eBay amid shortages driven by AI

Overpriced Mac minis are flooding eBay amid shortages of the sold-out machines, which have become a favored tool for running on-device AI models like OpenClaw. This week, reports indicated that the $599 M4 Mac mini base model with 16GB RAM and 256GB of storage is sold out on Apple’s retail website, with no options for delivery or in-store pickup. The shortages have since extended to other configurations of the base model, regardless of the amount of memory selected. This is the first time the base model has been sold out, some outlets noted. Meanwhile, models with higher storage (512GB and up) are only available to ship starting in June. As a result, eBay has become a secondary market for these in-demand computers. On the site, various configurations of the M4 Mac mini are available for sale at higher prices than if buying direct from Apple, which is no longer an option. Apple’s power-efficient Mac minis have become popular devices for testing and running at-home, on-device AI models, beginning with the OpenClaw craze but now extending …

Tesla Admits Its Robotaxis Are Being Driven Remotely

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Autonomous ride-hailing service Waymo made headlines last month after one of its executives explained during a Congressional hearing that the company relied on an army of “remote assistant operators” in the Philippines who are tasked with getting vehicles unstuck when they’re stumped. The February hearing, convened by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, once again highlighted that despite their best efforts to make it seem like there is no human in the loop, companies like Waymo continue to rely on them for the most delicate moments during their operations — even if Waymo’s remote operators technically never take over control over the wheel, as a spokesperson took pains to clarify at the time. Committee member and senator Ed Markey (D-MA) has led the charge for more transparency into the matter. As Wired reports, a series of letters he received from seven different robotaxi companies, including Tesla, Amazon’s Zoox, and Nuro, detail how humans remain a core …

Tesla Says Its Robotaxis Are Sometimes Driven by Remote Humans

A series of letters sent by autonomous-vehicle (AV) developers to Democratic US senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts sheds the most light yet on the human side of robot vehicle operations. In the documents, submitted to Markey as part of an investigation into self-driving-vehicle technology and released on Tuesday, seven companies, including Tesla, Amazon-owned Zoox, and Uber- and Nvidia-funded Nuro, released new details about their “remote assistance” programs. All the companies that responded to the senator’s office say they use remote assistants—humans charged with responding to autonomous vehicles when they get confused, stuck, or in emergencies. The programs, experts say, are an important part of any autonomous vehicle company’s safety considerations, a backstop for a technology that’s becoming safer by the year but will continue to run into new situations on the road indefinitely. In a report also released Tuesday, Senator Markey said the new details were not enough. “Every autonomous-vehicle company refused to disclose how often their AVs require assistance from [remote assistants]—hiding key information from the public about their AV’s true level of autonomy,” …
