I am trawling through Etsy, the online marketplace known for handmade kitsch ornaments and unofficial Taylor Swift merch — to find a witch. Not just any witch: I am looking for one who can provide me with a spell to mend my broken heart after a two-year relationship … and tell me how to navigate the cesspit that is modern dating. Self-styled Etsy witches — people who offer witchcraft services online — are selling spells, manifestations and tarot readings on Etsy and TikTok, promising everything from good weather on your wedding day to a new job or even a small fortune. Etsy Is In Its Flop Era, and Sellers Are Fleeing

Etsy Is In Its Flop Era, and Sellers Are Fleeing

In 2017, Emily Olson, a stay-at-home mom based in Boulder, Colorado, started selling prints and custom-made puppy portraits on Etsy. Her watercolors were simple and relatively cheap—images of saucer-eyed corgis and malamutes in mini-tuxes, which she sold for $75 to $300 each—but dog owners adored them: “They were a labor of love,” she says. In 2021, she says she made more than $40,000 off her Etsy store, and her social media following ballooned to 180,000 followers on YouTube. But in 2022, she noticed something odd: Her sales started precipitously declining. Competitors flooded the platform, and she kept finding copies of her work on drop-shipping sites like Alibaba, where they were advertised as original creations. Then there were the AI-generated pet portraits, which were supplanting her listings in search results and selling for a fraction of the price. The most frustrating part, she says, was that the AI-generated portraits were getting great reviews. “People were like, ‘Oh, this is the cutest image, I love it in my daughter’s bedroom.’ They didn’t really know or care who …

Etsy sells secondhand clothing marketplace Depop to eBay for $1.2B

Etsy is selling Depop, a secondhand clothing app popular with Gen Z and millennials, to eBay for $1.2 billion in cash, the company announced on Wednesday. Etsy says the deal will allow it to focus on its own marketplace. The deal comes nearly five years after Etsy acquired Depop for $1.62 billion, at a time when secondhand clothing apps were gaining in popularity. Founded in 2011, Depop generated approximately $1 billion in gross merchandise sales — the total value of goods sold through its platform — in 2025. In the U.S., the company saw nearly 60% year-over-year growth. As of December 31, 2025, the marketplace had seven million active buyers, nearly 90% of whom were under 34, and more than three million active sellers. “Depop has built a trusted, social-forward marketplace with strong momentum in the pre-loved fashion category, and we are confident that as part of eBay, Depop will be even more well-positioned for long-term growth, benefiting from our scale, complementary offerings, and operational capabilities,” said eBay CEO Jamie Iannone in the press release. …

Why 2025 was the year of the Etsy witch

Why 2025 was the year of the Etsy witch

Katie Begley needed “some good juju” this summer. Begley, a New York-based content creator and fitness instructor, was waiting to hear back about several big work opportunities, including a potential Little Caesars commercial with Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. So she turned to a figure praised online for offering low-stakes help for the price of a latte: an Etsy witch. “It can’t hurt. I love witches. I love magic. I love all of that,” Begley, 25, recalled thinking at the end of August when she went on the online marketplace known for personalized party swag and vintage clothing. “What’s the downside?” She ultimately bought four spells from a TikTok-approved witch — a soulmate attraction spell, a powerful obsession spell, glamor magic and a wealth and prosperity casting — for $60.76. The next day, Begley got a call that she had booked the commercial starring Barkley. “Of course, my head was like, ‘Oh — it was my witch,’” she said, laughing. Begley shared the story in two TikTok videos, racking up millions of views as …
