I found Windows’ built-in crash history tool — it goes back years and I had no idea it existed

Last week, my Windows laptop started acting up. During an intense gaming session, out of nowhere, my entire PC restarted. When I started looking into this matter, I found that some apps were quietly closing in the background, without any reason. I went through the event logs on Windows Event Viewer, but the cryptic codes made me feel like I was trying to read an ancient language. Thanks to my habit of researching stuff on the internet, I came across a secret tool that Windows was hiding. There is a hidden tool that tracks every crash, failed update, and all software hiccups your laptop has experienced. It has weeks, months, and even years’ worth of records, and it is called Windows Reliability Monitor. Here’s how to use it. Related I finally disabled these Windows services and my PC is happier for it Your PC might be secretly working harder than you are, and not always in ways that benefit you. You don’t need to install anything This effective troubleshooting tool is just a command away …

Rice’s whales existed before humans. Now Trump could make them extinct | Whales

Since before modern humans existed Rice’s whales have been diving to the depths of the ocean to gorge on fat-rich fish while growing to leviathan proportions, their bodies spanning the length of a bus and weighing as much as as six elephants. Unfortunately for these grand creatures, their only home became a patch of the Gulf of Mexico that the oil and gas industry, much later, became highly interested in for drilling. Only about 50 of these baleen whales still exist on Earth, surrounded by clanging aquatic highways of boats and shifting drilling infrastructure. Last week, unbeknown to the cetaceans, an existential moment arrived when the Trump administration made the extraordinary decision to scrap all protections for the Rice’s whale, along with other endangered marine life in the gulf, in service of an industry that has facilitated the overheating of our oceans and our atmosphere. It may result in the first extinction of a whale species in North American waters in 300 years. “Nothing surprises me with this administration but if I was still capable …

The secret Vin Diesel-directed Fast & Furious film you probably didn’t know existed

The secret Vin Diesel-directed Fast & Furious film you probably didn’t know existed

Vin Diesel has been the face of the Fast & Furious franchise since it first graced our screens in 2009, and no one is more passionate about the legacy of the films than the 58-year-old. The star took to Instagram on Tuesday to reminisce on an aspect of Fast & Furious history that many casual viewers were unaware of, and that avid fans of the franchise look back on fondly. That aspect is the lesser-known short film, Los Bandoleros, which was written and directed by Vin himself and released just after Fast & Furious dropped in June 2001. The film serves as a prequel to Fast & Furious, and sees Vin’s character, Dominic Toretto, team up with familiar faces to hijack a fuel tanker in the Dominican Republic. © Variety via Getty ImagesVin reminisced about the lesser-known short film Los Bandoleros also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sung Kang, Tego Calderón and Don Omar, and was so much of a passion project for Vin that he directed it entirely for free. “With the finale approaching, every day is …

Deep underground, a telescope may soon detect ghosts of stars that died before Earth existed

Deep underground, a telescope may soon detect ghosts of stars that died before Earth existed

Imagine looking up at the night sky and seeing a star suddenly burst into a blaze of light brighter than anything nearby. A flash so bright that it briefly outshines an entire galaxy before fading forever. This violent fate is rare: fewer than about 1% of stars are big enough to end their lives this way. Indeed, these dramatic explosions only occur in so-called “massive stars”. These are stars with a mass roughly eight times or more that of the Sun. But these cosmic explosions, known as supernovae, have naturally fascinated astronomers for centuries. In 1572, for instance, Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe observed a supernova explosion so bright that it could be seen with the naked eye for two years. Yet what we can see with our eyes, or even with powerful telescopes, when these stars die, is only a tiny fraction of the story. Because most of the energy from a supernova is carried away by neutrinos, these are nearly invisible particles often called “ghost particles” because they pass through almost everything in their …

Who Would Be Emperor If the Roman Empire Still Existed Today?

Who Would Be Emperor If the Roman Empire Still Existed Today?

During Wimbledon a few years ago, a thread about King Felipe VI of Spain went viral. It was posted to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter by Derek Guy, author of the menswear blog Die, Workwear! “Very rare to see this level of tailoring nowadays, even on the wealthy,” he commented on a photo of Felipe in the stands on the tournament’s last day. Even when not attending major sporting events, the king’s collars always hug his neck, his lapels are always well-proportioned, the lines of his coat always flow into his trousers, and his four-in-hand always has just the right asymmetry. For my money, such self-presentation befits not just a monarch, but indeed an emperor. It so happens that Felipe is one of the most plausible candidates for that job, at least in the hypothetical scenario that the Roman Empire never declined and fell. He’s also the only actual sitting monarch among them, though each of the others can also make his own credible claim to the imperial throne. So who would …

We’ve only just confirmed that Homo habilis really existed

We’ve only just confirmed that Homo habilis really existed

Homo habilis lived in East Africa up to 2 million years ago Natural History Museum, London/Alamy This is an extract from Our Human Story, our newsletter about the revolution in archaeology. Sign up to receive it in your inbox every month. Homo habilis is a paradoxical species. On the one hand, they have a famous name and hold the status of being the first members of our genus Homo: the first humans, if you like. On the other hand, we have never known that much about them, and what we do know is kind of weird. How can a species be simultaneously well known and little known? We have to start with the name, if only because it’s one of the few things we can be sure about. The species was given its moniker in 1964 by a trio of palaeoanthropologists: Louis Leakey, Phillip Tobias and John Napier. Though, as they acknowledged, it wasn’t their idea – their colleague Raymond Dart had suggested “habilis” from the Latin for “able, handy, mentally skilful, vigorous”. They applied the …

The 66-year-old admitted her strong preference for its predecessor, Pop Idol, during a new Magic Radio documentary, Popstars At 25: The Story Of A Talent Show Revolution. Rosencrantz was unequivocal in her critique of the two programmes, stating: “X Factor is not as good a format as Pop Idol, it just isn’t, Pop Idol is the most beautiful format.” She went on to laud Pop Idol as “perfect, pure format, and it works, and it’s worked in every single territory in the world that it’s hit, The X Factor hasn’t, and the reason it hasn’t is it’s not as pure.” Furthermore, she criticised The X …

TV icon Olivia Attwood: ‘My career wouldn’t have existed 10 years ago’

Olivia Attwood has proven herself a mainstay on television screens ever since she appeared on Love Island in 2017, and has carved herself out an impeccable career since. Looking into 2026, the reality star turned TV presenter has a stacked year ahead, from the brand new Celebrity Sabotage and The Heat to the hotly anticipated fourth season of Getting Filthy Rich as she dives deeper into the online adult industry, something she is immensely proud to be fronting once more. “[I’m] very proud to be on a fourth series, especially in this climate,” Attwood told RadioTimes.com in an exclusive interview. “We all know it’s more difficult than ever to get recommissions and to keep viewers engaged. And I think that obviously the channel [ITV2] had the appetite, but the channel had the appetite because the viewers are there.” The new series kicks off this week (17th January), as Attwood interviews celebrities like Katie Price and Kerry Katona as they share their experiences of selling sexual content online. Over the past three series, Attwood has explored …
