Regius Professor of Greek Tim Whitmarsh to explore morality in the Odyssey – Humanists UK

Regius Professor of Greek Tim Whitmarsh to explore morality in the Odyssey – Humanists UK

Tim Whitmarsh, Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge, will join Humanists UK Chief Executive Andrew Copson to ask how a 3,000-year-old poem works out what a good life looks like in a world where the gods are no moral guide at all – and what survived the journey to Christopher Nolan’s $1.7 billion adaptation. Gods without good: morality in the Odyssey will take place online on Tuesday 10 November, 19:30–21:00, and tickets are available now. The Odyssey may be the first great story in Western literature about living well without divine instruction. Its gods intervene constantly, but on no principle anyone could actually live by. Odysseus is favoured because a goddess enjoys his cleverness, not because he deserves it. The afterlife the poem describes hands out no rewards for a life well lived. And its hero is offered immortality and turns it down, to go home to a wife who will grow old and die. What the poem honours instead are human virtues, practised by people towards one another: hospitality, loyalty, endurance, …

The infamous explosion covered Pompeii and Herculaneum in volcanic debris, immortalizing the final moments of the ancient Roman cities and some of their unfortunate inhabitants in stunning detail.  Now, however, visitors can witness the glory of Pompeii before it all came crashing down in 79 CE. A former game engineer from Illinois and his team have developed an application that brings sites at the Archaeological Park of Pompeii to unprecedented life via Immersive Extended Reality technology. In other words, you can now stand in the forum alongside other ancient Romans and watch in horror as Mount Vesuvius starts to rumble along the horizon.  Todd …

Tuscany’s treasured islands: five to explore | Tuscany holidays

Tuscany’s treasured islands: five to explore | Tuscany holidays

Scattered between the Tuscan coast and Corsica, the seven islands of the Tuscan archipelago offer a striking contrast to mainland Tuscany. All are part of a protected national park, but each has its own character – some are lively, others tiny and sparsely inhabited. Montecristo and Gorgona are only accessible via strictly limited guided tours, but here’s a brief guide to the highlights of the other five. Photograph: Guardian Graphics Elba: the all-year-rounder As Italy’s third-largest island, and with a year-round community, Elba is the archipelago’s main tourist hub, blending Napoleonic history with rugged landscapes, lively seaside towns and fine beaches. It is famous for Napoleon’s brief 1814 exile at the Palazzina dei Mulini, but its history runs much deeper, with 16th-century Medici fortifications to defend against pirate raids around the coast, and medieval hill towns, some standing on sites occupied since Roman times, inland. Beach lovers tend to divide between the white-pebble coves of Sansone and Capo Bianco near the largest town, Portoferraio, in the north, and the golden sands of Fetovaia and Cavoli …

Offloading to AI Means Not Doing Philosophy: on the importance of exploring the space of ideas

Offloading to AI Means Not Doing Philosophy: on the importance of exploring the space of ideas

When I write philosophy, my task is not merely to generate the most persuasive argument for some target claim. Rather, my task is to figure out what I ought to say. I often have the experience of setting out to write a paper with a conclusion in view, only to find that spelling out the argument in detail leaves me not believing the conclusion anymore. The arguments instead lead elsewhere. I expect this experience is familiar. It reveals that writing philosophy is (or at least can be) more a matter of figuring out what to think than it is of figuring out how to express pre-existing ideas. I start a paper with a conclusion in mind, but I end up making discoveries through the process of writing. Careful writing is a way of exploring the space of ideas and settling my own mind about them. This is not just true for me doing original research intended for publication. It holds also for students asked to think through philosophical questions, even in introductory courses. When a …

Mass. teen charged with killing mother, brother after using ChatGPT to explore ‘fantasy stories’ of family’s deaths

Mass. teen charged with killing mother, brother after using ChatGPT to explore ‘fantasy stories’ of family’s deaths

A Massachusetts teenager used a laptop and a knife to beat his mother and brother to death, hours after he used ChatGPT to search “for theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family,” prosecutors said Thursday. Arjun Aravind, 17, of the affluent Boston suburb of Acton, was charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and Siddharth Aravind, 14, according to a criminal complaint filed in Concord. He also faces assault and battery charges, accused of using “a dangerous weapon, a Laptop,” to attack his two victims, the complaint says. Investigators said that “a heavily damaged bloody laptop computer was found consistent with it being used during the assault,” according to the complaint. Police also recovered what appeared to be a knife that was used in the attack: “A bent utensil, possibly a knife with an orange handle, was also found in the area of the disturbance,” the complaint said. Aravind had been having “behavioral issues” with “concerning internet activities” — to the point that “the family …
