Why we should all take quantum physics extremely personally

Why we should all take quantum physics extremely personally

Embracing quantum physics could make you see the world differently KamilSD / Alamy In December 2019, a bad tooth almost killed me. A terrible toothache turned into the biggest health crisis of my life, ultimately landing me in an intensive care unit for a week. Once I recovered, I had to make sense of why this happened to me. Personal negligence? Terrible luck? A fault of the US healthcare system? Rattled and unsure of how to feel, I turned to a place where I had long found answers to existential questions – quantum physics. Physics is often considered to be humanity’s oldest science, getting its start with early astronomers. Much of our understanding of the world is built on physics as a solid, rigorous, objective foundation. It is a science that breaks the world into pieces, analyses each of them, then reassembles them all into a whole that we understand better. This process, based on empiricism and mathematics, doesn’t care about feelings. Physics isn’t personal: for example, regardless of who you are, you cannot escape …

If You Are Extremely Careful Not To Do 11 Rude Things, Your Parents Knew What They Were Doing

Everyone veers into impolite patterns of behavior over the course of a lifetime, but there’s a big difference between being a rude person and someone who makes a mistake. If you’re one of those people who does their best to avoid being rude, it means your parents raised you right. Sometimes rudeness is an accidental outcome, like a person with ADHD who struggles to be on time. Other times, it’s a sign someone is innately selfish. Regardless, you can thank your parents if you are one of those special people who avoids hurting others by being rude. If you are extremely careful not yo do 11 rude things, your parents knew what they were doing 1. Talking over people Antonio Guillem | Shutterstock If you avoid talking over people, your parents did a great job raising you. Flat-out.  Conversations follow a natural pattern: one person speaks and the other person listens, waiting to share their thoughts until after the first person has finished. This pattern lets conversations flow comfortably and helps avoid rude behaviors, like …

‘Extremely embarrassing’ for govt but no reprimand for Ben-Gvir over flotilla video

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the treatment of detained Gaza flotilla activists by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir “not in line with Israel’s values and norms”, after a video of Ben-Gvir taunting the detainees sparked international outcry. However, while “extremely embarrassing” for the Israeli government, there has been little in the way of reprimand for Ben-Gvir, says France 24’s Noga Tarnopolsky. Source link

Microsoft AI Researchers Just Discovered Something That’s Going to Make Their Bosses Extremely Mad

Microsoft AI Researchers Just Discovered Something That’s Going to Make Their Bosses Extremely Mad

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech AI automation is typically exactly what it sounds like: automating tasks — many of which were previously carried out by humans — in an attempt to boost productivity and efficiency, often in a prelude to laying off workers wholesale. However, a new yet-to-be-peer-reviewed paper conducted by a group of Microsoft researchers and spotted by IT Pro found that today’s top AI systems remain eyebrow-raisingly weak at real-world workplace tasks. In fact, they often screw them up badly: the team studied frontier models including OpenAI’s GPT 5.4, Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6 and Google’s Gemini 3.1 Pro, and found that during complex assignments, those cutting edge bots corrupted an average of 25 percent of the content in documents. (Older models failed even more severely.) The researchers concluded that, overall, these “models are not ready for delegated workflows in the vast majority of domains” — which is a very striking finding from Microsoft in particular, which has made massive investments in …

‘Extremely positive and productive talks’: Trump praises Xi meeting

Chinese President Xi Jinping warned his US counterpart Donald Trump that missteps on Taiwan could push their two countries into “conflict”, a stark opening salvo as they met in Beijing on Thursday for a two-day summit. The Chinese Foreign ministry said the comments came in a closed-door meeting that lasted more than two hours. It was followed by a friendlier, opulent banquet during which Trump and Xi stressed the importance of working together. Story by Carys Garland. Keywords for this article Source link

Binman says ‘do not’ put extremely common item in your bin

Binman says ‘do not’ put extremely common item in your bin

Binmen could leave your rubbish behind on collection day if they spot this (Image: Getty) A binman claims that people who try to hide an item commonly found in many UK homes in the bin on collection day could have their rubbish left on the kerbside. He explained all on social media in a recent post. There are several ways to properly dispose of an old carpet or rug, says Ashley, who goes by @Theno1.binman on TikTok. He said: “Carpets? You do not put them in the bin. They are too big. They are a bulky item, so you do not put carpets in any of your household bins.” Why can’t carpets go in the bin? Carpets cannot go in regular household bins because they are bulky, heavy, non-biodegradable, and difficult to process, which creates issues at landfills and recycling facilities. They are considered specialised waste, and putting them in domestic bins can lead to non-collection or fines. Most carpets are made of synthetic fibres like nylon or polypropylene. These do not break down in …

Very difficult and extremely cool: how to start doing pull-ups | Well actually

Very difficult and extremely cool: how to start doing pull-ups | Well actually

The pull-up has long been seen as an important fitness metric. From 1966 to 2013, public middle and high school students in the US were required to do pull-ups as part of the presidential fitness test (an evaluation Donald Trump has considered reinstating). US Marine Corps members were long required to perform pull-ups as part of their regular physical fitness test, and prospective UK Royal Marines must complete a minimum of three to four pull-ups before they are eligible to join. There is no definitive data on how many adults can perform a proper pull-up, but two things are clear: they are very difficult and look extremely cool. “When a new client comes to see me, the most common exercise they say they’d like to be able to do is the pull-up,” says Emily Schofield, a certified personal trainer at the training company Ultimate Performance. “Achieving that first proper rep is one of the most satisfying milestones you can reach in the gym, because it’s a genuine, hard-earned display of strength, coordination and control.” Do …

Anok Yai Says She Felt “Extremely Nervous” to Wear a Prosthetic Wig as Balenciaga’s Black Madonna

Anok Yai Says She Felt “Extremely Nervous” to Wear a Prosthetic Wig as Balenciaga’s Black Madonna

“This is the first Met where I’ve done something crazy that I don’t think anyone will do,” supermodel Anok Yai told Vanity Fair as she was getting ready for the Met Gala 2026. “No one’s going to show up in another prosthetic wig, right?” Although Bad Bunny and Heidi Klum both used prosthetics for their Met Gala looks, it was the first Monday in May regular Yai, prepping for her “lucky number seven” Met Gala, who donned the evening’s only silicone-based hair. The unorthodox updo included a nod to the Greek mythological character Medusa, complete with a knotted snake adorned on the back of Yai’s head. Inspired by Renaissance paintings, Balenciaga creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli reimagined Yai as the Black Madonna, a figure seen throughout religious art. “I’m always nervous,” the Sudanese American model says. “But this time, I’m, like, extremely nervous.” The custom Balenciaga couture, complete with black ruched detailing, an oversized hood, and black leather gloves, required 15 people working around the clock for a week to make. “The train is about five …
