‘Chexit’: Global Asset Managers Are Fleeing China

FIL launched a wholly-owned subsidiary in Shanghai three years ago, but a lack of demand from retail investors led to disappointing growth. Reuters first reported the story. According to its sources, “A combination of fierce local competition, frequent leadership turnover and chronic struggles to build scale ultimately convinced global FIL executives that the China retail venture was untenable.” FIL has $1.18 trillion in assets under management (AUM). It started its China fund in 2023. The next year, Reuters saw an internal FIL document that said it needed more than $14 billion in assets to become profitable. After several years, it had reportedly reached only about $670 million (less than 5 percent of the goal) and began planning an exit. Fidelity follows multiple other global asset managers that are backing away from China amid domestic competition and geopolitical tensions. These include Schroders, Legal & General, and Vanguard. Naked college swimmer killed security guard before fleeing on foot in Maui, police say
A college athlete was arrested Thursday and accused of killing a 63-year-old security guard after police found him wandering naked through the streets of Maui. Legend Storer, 20, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure, according to online court records. Storer was a student at Concordia University Irvine and a member of the university’s NCAA Division II swim team during the 2024 to 2025 academic school year, according to the team’s roster. He is accused of killing Michael Dyer, 63, of Lahaina, Hawaii, according to the court records. Dyer was working as a security guard at a residential building in Lahaina, on Maui’s west coast, according to news release by the Maui Police Department. Storer has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Maui Police Department did not name Storer but said it received calls about a 20-year-old nude man wandering the streets of the nearby Kahana neighborhood around 3 a.m. on Thursday. A British fugitive who fled to Spain after being charged over an £800,000 drugs operation has been jailed for five years after being extradited back to the UK. Callum Fox, 29, was sentenced for directing serious and organised crime linked to a major drug supply network in Paisley, Renfrewshire. The case dates back to July 6, 2022, when Police Scotland officers raided a flat on Albion Street in Paisley under warrant and seized drugs with an estimated street value of £800,000. Information uncovered during the investigation led detectives to Fox, who they identified as playing a leading role in organising the large-scale supply and distribution of illegal drugs. Following extensive enquiries, Fox was arrested by the Police Service of Northern Ireland in August 2024 and returned to Scotland, where he was charged with directing others in drug dealing. After appearing in court, he was released on bail but later absconded, fleeing to Spain in a bid to evade justice.
