(Photo by AFP via Getty Images) / – | Afp | Getty Images Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis have stepped up their deadly campaign of strikes on Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh, where booms were heard on Thursday, flights disrupted, and some office staff told to work from home. The Houthis said they had fired a ballistic missile at Riyadh airport and repeated a threat to force Saudi airspace to close after the kingdom gave support to the forces of Yemen’s internationally recognised government in a reignited civil war. The conflict, now an overspill of the US-Iran war, has added new chaos to a region already aflame, and threatens to draw other states into gruelling mountain fighting – with Syria now considering deploying troops to assist Saudi Arabia. The kingdom has pushed for support from allied nations, including Turkey and Pakistan, even if only in a logistical or defensive capacity, as it tries to reverse Houthi gains in southwest Yemen, …

Simulating Flight FZ1073’s Sudden Plunge

SHERFIELD ON LODDON, England, Oct 4 (Reuters) – Flydubai’s flight FZ1073, which plunged 16,000 feet in about 30 seconds before being levelled out and landing safely, would have felt like a “vertical roller coaster”, according to an aviation instructor who recreated the descent in a flight simulator for Reuters. The steep fall, after an attack on the captain by the co-pilot during a ‌flight on Wednesday, would have put huge ‌strain on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft – as well as the passengers and crew, said Alberto Paduanelli, owner of ALPA Simulation in Sherfield on Loddon, southern England. The co-pilot of the flydubai jet, which was bound for Israel from Dubai, attacked the pilot with an emergency crash axe, the United Arab Emirates prosecutor general said on Saturday, calling the incident a “terrorist attack”. The co-pilot was identified as Hammam al-Hammami, an Omani national, two sources with knowledge of the investigation told Reuters. UAE authorities did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation of his identity. Reuters could not independently reach al-Hammami for …

The FlyDubai flight to Tel Aviv is a modern story of Jewish heroism

(RNS) — Some summer night years from now, a counselor at a Jewish summer camp will gather the kids around the fire and tell them a story. He will hold up a pair of cheap airline headphones and start from there with a story about a man with a knife and an airplane falling out of the sky. Its heroes are ordinary Jews who unbuckled their seatbelts and went forward. On Wednesday morning (Sept. 30), 180 passengers were aboard a FlyDubai flight on its way from Dubai to Tel Aviv, most of them Israelis heading home for Sukkot. Two hours and 15 minutes into the trip, the Boeing 737 MAX pitched into a dive, dropping roughly 17,000 feet in under two minutes. According to passengers, the Omani first officer turned on the captain, an Indian pilot named Smit Machchhar, and stabbed him. Machchhar, bleeding from his copilot’s knife, acted heroically and used his last bit of energy to unlock the cockpit door and …
