I’ve trimmed my startup apps list quite a few times, and even gone through Autoruns line by line. Yet none of these tools perfectly explain why my laptop can feel busy long after the login screen. I decided this time to record a complete boot using Microsoft’s Windows Performance Toolkit, included with the Windows ADK, rather than continue guessing. The trace revealed activity that normal startup tools don’t show, and the experience changed how I view slow startup. Related I disabled these Windows services Microsoft recommends – and everything works better Not everything enabled by default is essential. Startup apps were only the surface The trace showed me the timing I couldn’t see The first thing that made me pause was the service initialization report. I observed initialization intervals for several services that were far longer than I would have guessed. Interestingly, I’d never considered looking at most of them. I used xbootmgr to capture the boot trace, then used xperf to extract reports from it. Windows reached the desktop in about 25 seconds, but …
