Spain pushes to end EU-Israel association agreement – POLITICO

Sánchez has emerged as one of Israel’s most vocal critics in the EU. He accused Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of committing genocide in Gaza and denounced the joint U.S.-Israel strikes against Iran as an “immense error.” Critics claim that Israel’s continued strikes against Lebanon are undermining a peace settlement in the broader region. During his speech in Andalusia, Sánchez called for an immediate end to the war in the Middle East that has led to a surge in global oil prices and mass displacement across the region. The foreign ministers of Spain, Ireland and Slovenia accused Israel of breaching the association agreement with the EU in a letter to the bloc’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, on Saturday. They said that the approval of the death penalty by the Israeli parliament and violent action by Israeli settlers in the West Bank are violations of fundamental human rights. Madrid’s proposal to end the association agreement, however, is unlikely to immediately succeed as it requires unanimity among the EU’s 27 member countries. The idea is likely to …

Israel’s attack on UNRWA is central to its genocide of the Palestinians | Israel-Palestine conflict

Israel’s attack on UNRWA is central to its genocide of the Palestinians | Israel-Palestine conflict

It is time for the United Nations to accept that Israel’s attack on its agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) is an essential part of the Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people. This is not an accusation coming from a critic of Israel. It is a clear, on-the-record statement from the deputy mayor of Jerusalem, Arieh King, who, in January, invoked divine Jewish authority, proudly proclaiming, “God willing, we will expel, kill, eliminate, and destroy all UNRWA personnel.” As an agency founded specifically to serve Palestinian refugees after the creation of Israel in 1948, UNRWA has been involved in almost every aspect of the lives of millions of Palestinians. Its programmes span primary health, community mental health initiatives, education, relief and social services, mother and child healthcare, and refugee camp improvement. Moreover, UNRWA’s extensive and recently digitised archive contains property deeds and proof of land ownership, which can assist the Palestinians in securing compensation and the right of return, which many Israelis see as an existential threat to the Jewish state. UNRWA’s very existence, as a …

MEP Rima Hassan hits back after police detention – POLITICO

MEP Rima Hassan hits back after police detention – POLITICO

She was again questioned by the police on Friday morning as part of an investigation into a social media post she wrote last week expressing solidarity with Japanese terrorist Kōzō Okamoto. Okamoto was convicted of a terrorist attack that killed 26 people at Ben Gurion International Airport in 1972. In her post on Friday, Hassan, who is an MEP with the hard-left France Unbowed party, said she had two types of CBD, a chemical that is found in the cannabis plant but does not have the same intoxicating effects as THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. The first type complied with legal norms, but the second, she wrote, contained “traces of synthetic drugs,” according to investigators. “I told them where I had legally bought this CBD. Simple checks are ongoing into the origin of the CBD,” Hassan added. Hassan also criticized the probe into her now-deleted post on X, accusing the “pro-Israeli lobby in France” of targeting her “political opinions on the genocide in Gaza and Palestine.” She said that 13 out of 16 …

EU diplomats meet in Ukraine to pledge support for Russia war crimes tribunal – POLITICO

EU diplomats meet in Ukraine to pledge support for Russia war crimes tribunal – POLITICO

“Some were just walking on the street, some were killed in their own homes, some were tortured and raped,” Kallas said, adding the slaughter was just one example of Russia’s barbarity throughout the war and could not go “unpunished.”  She added that the EU was “pushing forward” with creating a special tribunal to prosecute Kremlin officials over the full-scale invasion, along with a “claims commission” that will allow individuals to petition for Russian war damages.  Ukraine signed an agreement with the Council of Europe to establish the tribunal in June last year, but it still needs legal and financial backing from states in Europe and beyond to get off the ground. All EU countries but Hungary put out a joint statement of support on Tuesday, welcoming the tribunal’s eventual “operationalisation.” Budapest, which is among Moscow’s closest allies in the EU, continues to use its veto to block a €90 billion tranche of funds for Ukraine over a bitter dispute with Kyiv about a pipeline transporting oil from Russia. Hungary is also refusing to approve the bloc’s 20th package of sanctions on the Kremlin. Kallas said there had been no breakthrough on the funds or sanctions, but that she hoped to …

The Gaza Tribunal: A question of complicity | Genocide

The Gaza Tribunal: A question of complicity | Genocide

What role has the United Kingdom played in Israel’s war on Gaza? We meet those who say it’s complicit in atrocities committed there. During the Gaza war, protesters have flooded the streets of major British cities, calling on their leaders to cut off the supply of weapons and other military hardware to Israel. The United Kingdom’s relationship with its ally is under scrutiny. Jeremy Corbyn, a British MP, set up the Gaza Tribunal to examine whether the UK’s support for Israel amounts to complicity. Doctors and aid workers gave emotional accounts of the horrors they saw while working in the Gaza Strip, and journalists presented evidence of weapons shipments and spy flights allegedly operating from a nearby British air force base. All were making the case that the UK’s unwavering support for Israel is no longer legally or morally justifiable. In its final report, published on March 16, the Gaza Tribunal said the UK has failed in its duty to prevent genocide and has been complicit in atrocities. It also recommended that the UK end …

French jihadist sentenced to life in jail over IS group genocide of Iraq’s Yazidis

French jihadist sentenced to life in jail over IS group genocide of Iraq’s Yazidis

A French jihadist was sentenced to life in jail on Friday for involvement in Islamic State group atrocities against Iraq’s Yazidi minority, the first case in France to tackle the issue. The Paris Assizes Court found Sabri Essid guilty in absentia of genocide, crimes against humanity and complicity in the crimes, committed between 2014 and 2016 when the jihadists occupied swathes of northern Syria and Iraq. “Sabri Essid took part in the genocide perpetrated by the Islamic State group,” presiding judge Marc Sommerer told the court. “Essid became part of the criminal network repeatedly buying and reselling a very large number of Yazidi victims,” he said, adding the court judged that the group had “specifically targeted” the Yazidi minority for its religious beliefs. The Islamic State group regarded the Yazidis, who follow a pre-Islamic faith, as heretics. Essid, a Frenchman born in 1984 and who joined the IS group in Syria in 2014, is presumed to have been killed in 2018. But without proof of his death, he was tried and convicted in absentia. He …
