Geothermal startup Fervo Energy to raise up to .3B in IPO

Geothermal startup Fervo Energy to raise up to $1.3B in IPO

Geothermal startup Fervo Energy said Monday it hopes to raise up to $1.3 billion in its initial public offering.  The company would be valued at up to $6.5 billion if shares sell at the top of its $21 to $24 price target. That’s more than twice what Fervo had reportedly been seeking earlier this year when it confidentially filed paperwork with the SEC to start the IPO process. The stock will trade on Nasdaq under the ticker FRVO. Fervo’s price target comes on the heels of X-energy’s successful IPO. The nuclear power startup raised $1 billion in an upsized IPO. When the company set its price target for the IPO, it sought a valuation of around $7 billion. Today, X-energy’s market capitalization i over $8 billion. Both Fervo and X-energy have been boosted by surging electricity demand from tech companies, which have been racing to secure supplies to feed their AI data centers. The scramble has driven prices for new natural gas power plants up 66% in the last two years.  Fervo says it’s Cape …

UK’s first deep geothermal electricity plant switches on | Science, Climate & Tech News

The UK’s first deep geothermal plant that produces power from heat miles underground and lithium for batteries is being switched on in Cornwall. Geothermal Engineering Ltd’s (GEL) £50m United Downs site will deliver renewable electricity around the clock, generated from the country’s deepest well ever drilled, at more than three miles (5km) below the surface. The site will draw up water at extremely high temperatures of more than 190C to drive turbines that will generate power for 10,000 homes. The water contains a high concentration of lithium, which will be extracted to produce zero-carbon lithium carbonate, which can be used in the production of electric car batteries. The company said on its website: “Geothermal energy is a form of renewable energy derived from the Earth’s natural heat; the term ‘geothermal’ literally meaning ‘heat from the Earth’. “In Cornwall, natural fractures or faults …

Is geothermal energy on the cusp of a worldwide renaissance?

Geothermal power plant at United Downs in Cornwall, UK Thomas Frost Photography/Geothermal Engineering Limited The UK’s electricity grid has started getting its first geothermal power amid a worldwide resurgence of interest in geothermal, thanks to improving well technologies and rising power demand from data centres. The United Downs plant in Cornwall will generate 3 megawatts of electricity while also producing lithium for battery production. “Let’s call it a renaissance,” says Ryan Law, CEO of Geothermal Engineering Ltd., the company behind United Downs. “There is a lot going on in the US. There is quite a lot going on in Europe too, I think, in part driven by our sort of insatiable demand for 24/7 renewable energy.” As energy grids come to rely on wind and solar generation that changes with the weather, geothermal can provide continuous clean power with a shorter build time than a nuclear plant and a smaller environmental impact than hydropower. Although geothermal power heated Roman baths 2000 years ago and has produced electricity for decades in volcanic hotspots like Iceland and …
