Dversnes keeps sprinters at bay to win Giro stage 15, Vingegaard retains pink

May 24 : Norway’s Fredrik Dversnes outsprinted rivals in a breakaway group and kept the peloton at bay to win stage 15 of Giro d’Italia on Sunday, with Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard retaining the pink jersey after the stage was shortened for safety reasons. Dversnes, an Uno-X Mobility rider, joined Martin Marcellusi, Mattia Bais and Mirco Maestri in the break and prevailed in a four-man sprint to the finish line.  Italians Maestri and Marcellusi also made the podium, in second and third place respectively. “This was my big shot,” said Dversnes, the first Norwegian to win a stage in Giro d’Italia since Edvald Boasson Hagen won the seventh stage in 2009. “You always think about (the win) on the way, but when we had two minutes’ lead pretty late in the race, you of course start believing.” The breakaway group set a high pace in the flat stage, maintaining an average speed of over 51 km per hour.  The peloton hung back in the 157-km ride from Voghera as they entered Milan for four laps in …

Vingegaard doubles down to win Giro stage nine

Vingegaard tracked race rival Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) when the Austrian attacked near the end of the 184 km from Cervia to Corno alle Scale, but the Dane powered away in the closing kilometre, with his Visma teammate Davide Piganzoli coming in third. Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious) put in another brave ride to limit the damage and crossed the line fifth, 41 seconds behind the winner to maintain his grip on the pink jersey, with a lead of two minutes and 24 seconds over Vingegaard, with Gall a further 35 seconds behind. CRUEL ON CICCONE Italian Giulio Ciccone’s calculated ride failed to pay off, with the Lidl-Trek rider caught by Vingegaard and Gall in the final two kilometres after he looked set for the stage …

Narvaez strikes again with solo victory in gruelling Giro stage eight

CHIETI, Italy, May 16 : Ecuador’s Jhonatan Narvaez claimed his second stage victory of the Giro d’Italia on Saturday, delivering a masterful solo performance to win stage eight after a gruelling finale. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider outlasted Andreas Leknessund in a tense pursuit up the final climbs, crossing the line 32 seconds ahead of the Norwegian.  Leknessund mounted a determined chase in an effort to stay in contact with Narvaez up the punishing final ascent but was unable to bridge the gap and crossed the line in second place. After the race, Narvaez paid tribute to teammate Mikkel Bjerg, thanking the Dane for driving the breakaway to set up a decisive attack on the penultimate climb where the Ecuadorean distanced Leknessund, with Bjerg crossing the line 16th. “It was a nice stage for me. I think we played well, with my teammate. He was the man of the day, Mikkel Bjerg and always working for the team,” Narvaez said. “In the end it was about the legs. The first part, the full headwind, on the …

Narvaez powers to Giro stage four win, Ciccone in the pink

CATANZARO, Italy, May 12 : Ecuador’s Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates XRG) powered to the line to win stage four of the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday, outpacing Orluis Aular, with Italian Giulio Ciccone taking over the leader’s pink jersey after crossing the line in third. Narvaez had previously won Giro stages in 2020 and 2024 but had not raced since a crash in January at the Tour Down Under in Australia. “It’s really big for me, coming from three months training in Ecuador,” Narvaez said. “I want to say thanks to my family, my wife, my team. They’ve been a great support in this time.” The 138-km ride from Catanzaro to Cosenza only kicked into gear when the stage reached the foot of the long climb to Cozzo Tunno 80 km into the race, …
