Harpoon Ventures isn’t for “nerds.” This is one of the many selling points investor Clint Brown gives for the San Diego–based defense-tech venture capital firm, which recently closed a $155 million fundraising round. Another selling point? In 2010, Iris van Herpen, only three years after establishing her eponymous couture brand, sent the first 3D-printed garment down the runway as part of her “Crystallization” collection. A top evoking the skeletal structure of a snake with its ivory-colored coils of 3D-printed polyamide, the piece was a collaboration with British architect Daniel Widrig. “It was a big moment,” says van Herpen, 41, as she contemplates the look on a form in the Brooklyn Museum galleries. “And it was definitely a starting point for me to collaborate with architects on new techniques.” At the time, 3D printing was mostly the purview of architecture and engineers. Van Herpen was the first designer to utilize the technology for a wearable garment. More than 15 years later, she has continued to push the boundaries of material and technique, collaborating with architects, sculptors, chemists, multidisciplinary artists, bioengineers and astrophysicists. Ukraine’s armed forces say they have struck some of Russia’s most advanced combat aircraft 1,060 miles inside Russian territory, in one of the deepest drone attacks of the war. Drones hit Su-57 stealth fighters and Su-34 bombers at Shagol airbase in the Chelyabinsk region, said Kyiv military sources. The strikes occurred on 25 April although Ukraine is still assessing the damage. Each Su-57 is worth around £30 million, and the Su-34 about £27 million. The strike against Vladimir Putin’s most modern warplanes – far beyond the Ural Mountains – is a first for Ukraine, if confirmed. Regional governor Alexey Teksler described the incident that day only as an “attempted UAV attack” that was “thwarted,” insisting there were no casualties or damage. Meanwhile, Moscow has not commented on the losses yet. Local posts on social media reported drones flying over residential neighbourhoods at dawn, followed by explosions near the Chelyabinsk Higher Military Aviation School of Navigators — an important training centre for Russia’s long‑range aviation and drone operators.
