Two Men Found Guilty of Spying on Hong Kong Dissidents in UK for China

By Michael Holden and Sam Tobin LONDON, May 7 (Reuters) – Two men, including a British immigration officer, were found guilty in a London court on Thursday of spying on behalf of Hong Kong and ultimately China, targeting prominent pro-democracy dissidents now based in Britain. Chung Biu “Bill” Yuen, 65, and Chi Leung “Peter” Wai, 40, who worked for the UK Border Force, were convicted of assisting a foreign intelligence service by carrying out surveillance on targets between December 2023 and ‌May 2024. The men, both dual Chinese and British nationals, ‌had denied the accusations, while the Chinese embassy in London has accused Britain of fabricating the charges against them. They are believed to be the first people to have been convicted of spying for China in Britain, local media reported. Wai and Yuen will be sentenced at a later date and face up to 14 years in jail. The jury at London’s Old Bailey court was unable to reach a verdict on another charge of conducting “foreign interference” by forcing entry on behalf of Hong …

Red paint attacks continue across London targeting suspected brothels

Red paint attacks continue across London targeting suspected brothels

A fresh attack has renewed concerns that gangsters are continuing to target rival brothels on the streets of London, leaving locals “traumatised”. Mystery surrounds these types of attack. There is no known evidence to suggest the people living in the targeted houses on Lowfield Road are running brothels or are in debt to loan sharks, but it follows a spate of similar incidents across London in recent times. Further east in the capital, Walthamstow has been a particular target where red paint has been splashed, smeared or daubed across multiple properties. One of the buildings is usually singled out with the allegation that it is a “brothel” — the word scrawled on to the exterior. In some cases, handwritten notes have been put through nearby letterboxes, identifying the same property as a brothel. Stella Creasy, the Labour and Cooperative MP for Walthamstow, has previously raised her concerns over these crimes of the night. Following a succession of sinister and still unexplained red paint attacks, she called out the police for failing to treat the repeated …

China’s Shenzhou-21 Astronaut Crew to Stay in Space an Extra Month

HONG KONG, April 17 (Reuters) – China’s Shenzhou-21 astronaut crew will stay in space for an extra month, after careful consideration from China’s Manned Space Engineering Office, the country’s state broadcaster reported on ‌Friday. The Shenzhou-21 space rocket and ‌its crew blasted off atop a Long March-2F rocket from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China on October 31. The missions involve trios of astronauts on six-month stays in space. On the current mission are Zhang Hongzhang, Wu Fei – China’s youngest astronaut to be sent to space – and Commander Zhang Lu,  who flew on the 2022 Shenzhou-15 mission. The three astronauts were ages 39, 32 and 48, respectively, at the time of launch. The astronauts are working closely with the support of the space station’s robotic arm and researchers and have successfully completed tasks including installing space debris protection devices and inspecting extravehicular equipment and facilities, CCTV said, citing the space office. The trio have been in orbit for over five months and are in good living and working condition, CCTV said. The Shenzhou-21 …

How fur is fighting an EU ban – POLITICO

How fur is fighting an EU ban – POLITICO

“Speak to Fendi. Speak to Louis Vuitton. Speak to Dior,” he said. “They’re all using fur, they’re all selling fur.” Like Moser, Oaten came to the sector from outside — a former Liberal Democrat MP, headhunted after leaving Westminster in 2010 to help modernize an industry he said he barely knew existed.  What he found surprised him. Not a cottage trade but a complex global supply chain, running from farms in Finland and Greece through processing workshops in Italy, auction houses in Helsinki, manufacturers in Hong Kong, and finally to boutiques in London, Paris and Rome. Younger buyers have been drawn to vintage fur through sustainability thinking: natural materials, longevity, the antithesis of fast fashion. | Jean-Pierre Muller/AFP via Getty Images That complexity is part of his answer to the decline narrative. Saga Furs, in Helsinki, is now the only major European auction house still operating. A single skin bought there might travel through four countries before it becomes a coat. The raw export figures cited by critics, Oaten argued, miss most of the value. …

Mongolia Names New Prime Minister Following Stalemate in Parliament

Mongolia Names New Prime Minister Following Stalemate in Parliament

BEIJING, March 31 (Reuters) – Mongolia’s parliament on Monday confirmed Uchral Nyam-Osor as the nation’s third prime minister in nine months, following his predecessor’s resignation last week over strife within the ruling Mongolian People’s Party and a legislative stalemate. During a parliamentary session on ‌Monday, 88 out of 107 lawmakers ‌voted to appoint Uchral to the coal-rich country’s No. 2 post, after the 39-year-old vowed to trim the bureaucracy and stabilise import prices, the official Montsame news agency reported on Tuesday. The outgoing prime minister, Zandanshatar Gombojav, resigned on Friday, a move analysts say was a compromise to resolve a boycott of the parliamentary session by the opposition Democratic Party and a faction within the ruling MPP over the past two weeks. Zandanshatar assumed the post in June 2025 after Luvsannamsrai Oyun-Erdene was ousted following corruption allegations that erupted into street protests. Despite the leadership change, political volatility and the impasse in parliament are unlikely to be quickly resolved. “There is deep animosity between the ruling party and the opposition, divide among factions within a party, …

Hong Kong Marquee Art Sales Total 4.9 M., up 18% from 2025 Auctions

Hong Kong Marquee Art Sales Total $164.9 M., up 18% from 2025 Auctions

For the second consecutive year, Christie’s, Phillips, and Sotheby’s aligned their marquee spring auctions in Asia with the week of Art Basel Hong Kong. The strategy clearly worked, with the three houses generating a combined $164.9 million across their modern and contemporary art evening sales. That result marked a significant rebound from last autumn’s $136.3 million — the lowest total in eight years — and also surpassed last spring’s comparable total of $139.9 million. While gallerists told ARTnews that sales at Art Basel had been measured, the auction market showed robust demand for trophy works from collectors across Asia. Related Articles Leading the season was Christie’s evening sale on March 27, which realized HK$655.7 million ($83.8 million). Coinciding with the auction house’s 40th anniversary in Asia, Christie’s assembled a tightly curated selection, focusing on works by modern masters appearing on the market for the first time. (All prices are inclusive of fees unless otherwise indicated.) The top lot was Abstraktes Bild by Gerhard Richter, offered with a third-party guarantee and selling for HK$92.1 million ($11.77 …

ASEAN countries won’t take sides in US-China rivalry, want region kept open and inclusive: PM Wong

ASEAN countries won’t take sides in US-China rivalry, want region kept open and inclusive: PM Wong

FRIENDS WITH ALL Touching on Japan-China ties and the back-to-back timing of his visits to Tokyo last week and Hainan and Hong Kong this week, Mr Wong acknowledged that the two countries “are going through a difficult phase in their relations”. “But from Singapore’s point of view, we are friends with both China and Japan. For that matter, with America and other major partners,” he said. While major powers may have difficulties in their relations with one another, Singapore’s goal is to remain friends with all of them – and Mr Wong said he believes that this is possible. “That is our approach, has always been our approach consistently, and we will continue to find ways to engage all these major powers, deepen our cooperation further and look for win-win outcomes,” he said. On the timing of his China visit, Mr Wong said it was not pre-planned. His Japan trip had originally been set for last year but was delayed due to scheduling difficulties. Once dates were eventually agreed upon – after Japan’s elections earlier …
