Florida County Officials Question The Importance of School Libraries and More Library World Updates

Welcome back, library friends. As we all know, censorship news continues to run rampant, but there are a few key stories related to federal- and state-level legislation and lawsuits that deserve a bit more attention. Let’s dive in. A New Federal Book Banning Bill Republican senators have announced a companion bill to the book banning legislation introduced in the House. Both bills would eliminate funding for any public schools that provide student access to materials that Republicans deem “inappropriate.” More of the same, but now it’s another federal problem that needs to be stopped. The fact that this bill was introduced right before the Senate went on recess shows that Republicans did not want it to gain public attention. EveryLibrary has issued a statement. Florida County Officials Question The Importance of School Libraries After banning hundreds of books, Clay County, Florida, school officials are debating the importance of high school libraries, which is the next logical step in the book banning agenda. As part of this discussion, Chief Academic Officer Roger Dailey cited the fact …

The Importance of El Paso | Julia Preston

The Importance of El Paso | Julia Preston

El Paso sits in a verdant opening between arid mountains at the westernmost tip of Texas, at a place where the Rio Grande often runs shallow enough to wade across from Ciudad Juárez, its twin city in Mexico. Since the lands north of the river were taken over by the United States in 1848 as the spoils of the Mexican-American War, the pass has been a crossing point, in both directions, for Mexican immigrants, laborers, and traders; for soldiers and smugglers, politicos and revolutionaries; for cowboys, Native people, Black people; for families bifurcated by the boundary. The journalist Jazmine Ulloa grew up in the city, and in the course of her work over the past decade she came to feel that her hometown had been wrongly marginalized in the story Americans tell about the origins and development of their country. In El Paso: Five Families and One Hundred Years of Blood, Migration, Race, and Memory, she sets out to restore the city “to its rightful position” as a place of entry and connection as consequential …

In a recent report, the NGO stressed the response to the health emergency “must not hollow out the aid programming that is holding communities together”. Speaking to FRANCE 24, Secretary-General Charlotte Slente lamented a “funding crisis” that had already begun before the Ebola outbreak, adding that with the arrival of the virus, “there’s a risk these resources are now turned into a response to Ebola”. Messi reaffirms enduring importance with World Cup hat-trick

Messi reaffirms enduring importance with World Cup hat-trick

KANSAS CITY, Missouri, June 16 : With a dazzling hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 World Cup win over Algeria on Tuesday, the 38-year-old Lionel Messi vindicated coach Lionel Scaloni’s assertion on the eve of the match that he remains fundamental to the reigning champions. Exactly 20 years after netting his first World Cup goal, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner again shaped the narrative, moving level with Miroslav Klose’s 16 goals for a share of the all-time men’s scoring record at the tournament. On a night that also marked a record sixth World Cup appearance and his 200th international match, Messi drew roars from the crowd from early on, robbing Algeria of possession high up the pitch in the second minute. Beyond the hat-trick that would follow, that defensive effort and intensity offered a snapshot of what the forward could still offer his side at the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. “It’s an advantage to have Leo, because of how he manages the group and drives it forward,” said midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, who …

Prince William highlights importance of mental health support | Royal | News

Prince William visits a local mental health group in Norfolk (Image: Getty) The Prince of Wales heard how a local mental health charity has been a lifeline to rural communities in Norfolk, with one man telling him he would be unlikely to be here today if it weren’t for the support Mind had offered him. On a visit to Norfolk and Waveney Mind at Anmer Social Club’s Community Hall, situated on the King’s Sandringham estate on Thursday morning, William heard how the charity is delivering vital mental health support to local people, including those who work on the royal estate. “Mind have become a sort of family,” a 71-year-old man told William. “It’s good to be able to talk… and deal with real people, caring people, people you trust.” The community groups provided by the mental health charity are located within touching distance from their homes and provide a safe, non-judgemental space where attendees can build supportive relationships and help navigate difficult periods of their life. Last year, Norfolk and Waveney Mind, a local branch …

The Importance of Training for Mental Health Integration

The Importance of Training for Mental Health Integration

A patient arrives at a primary care clinic complaining of chronic headaches, fatigue, insomnia, and gastrointestinal distress. Over the next several years, she undergoes multiple medical evaluations, sees several providers, and receives treatment for individual symptoms. Eventually, a clinician asks a different question: “How are you doing emotionally?” The answer reveals severe, untreated anxiety and a history of trauma that had been influencing her physical health all along. Stories like this are far from uncommon. Every day, patients enter health care settings carrying a complex mix of biological, psychological, and social challenges. Yet our educational systems continue to train most health care professionals as though these dimensions can be addressed separately. While health care delivery is increasingly moving toward integrated, team-based models, much of health care education remains rooted in professional silos that were inherited from a different era. The result is a persistent disconnect between how clinicians are trained and how patients actually experience health and illness. If we are serious about improving outcomes, expanding access, and preparing the future workforce, we must fundamentally …

San Diego mosque shooting shows importance of teaching pluralism

San Diego mosque shooting shows importance of teaching pluralism

(RNS) — This week, Muslims around the world are celebrating Eid al-Adha, a sacred holiday rooted in sacrifice — the willingness to give what is most precious in service of faith and love. On May 18 at the Islamic Center of San Diego, three Muslim men embodied that devotion when they gave their lives to protect children and their community. A security guard and congregants of the mosque chose courage in the face of violence and saved many lives. But the community that calls this mosque home is grieving the loss of its members’ safety, their sanctuary and three beloved lives taken from them at the hands of two teenagers. This shooting was not just an attack on a sacred space — it was an attack on the very idea that all of us, across our differences, deserve to live in safety and dignity. As a Muslim, as a mother and as someone who has spent my life building bridges across lines of faith and identity, I felt the news like a blow to the …

“Taiwan Loses Its Strategic Importance In 18 Months,” Says Chamath Palihapitiya

In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier that aired Friday, President Trump said that he doesn’t want “to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war” over Taiwan. “I’m not looking to have somebody to go independent and, you know, we’re supposed to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war,” Trump told Baier. “I’m not looking for that. I want them to cool down. I want China to cool down.” Taiwan has been a major point of friction between Washington and Beijing. Last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told NBC News that the issue was not a key topic during Trump’s summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The initial White House readout of the summit also did not mention Taiwan, home to the world’s most advanced semiconductor production. Taiwan is strategically important for three main reasons: It is indispensable to global semiconductor production. It sits at the center of the Western Pacific security architecture. It remains a major flashpoint in U.S.-China relations. In other words, Taiwan is critically important to the U.S. because it …
