New Danfoss hydraulic pump increases equipment runtime by 50%

Scottish engineering and powertrain experts Danfoss have developed a new digital hydraulic system designed specifically for electric construction equipment that can reduce energy consumption from the machine’s battery by 35%, and improve runtime by more than 50%. (!) Danfoss started with a Develon DX300LC‑7 crawler excavator that was fitted with a Danfoss Editron EM-PMI375 drive motor, EC-C1200 inverter, and MC050 motor controller, and three 140-kWh batteries to make it fully electric. The company then replaced the unit’s conventional swashplate hydraulic pump with a Danfoss-developed DDP180D pump motor to service the excavator’s boom, arm, bucket, and swing. The new unit, instead of supplying constant power and pressure throughout the system, uses ten individually controllable outlets to provide hydraulic force where only it’s needed, allowing designers to effectively designed for the machine’s average workload instead of its peak load. The end result is a massively more efficient machine that can do significantly more work with the same amount of energy. “We are extremely encouraged by these results, but there is more work to do,” says Alasdair Robertson, …

Watching Fox News increases belief in “Great Replacement” hokum

Watching Fox News increases belief in “Great Replacement” hokum

During a Washington Nationals baseball game on May 17, 2026, three people unfurled a large banner from the upper deck of Nationals Park displaying a link to a white nationalist website. The website, warning of the replacement of whites by people of color, called for the deportation of 100 million people from the United States. The disturbing incident reflects the broader ascendance of the “great replacement theory,” the xenophobic conspiracy theory asserting that shadowy elites are embracing permissive immigration policies to replace native-born white Americans with immigrants of color. Prominent Republicans, including President Donald Trump, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and conservative podcaster Tucker Carlson, have echoed ideas associated with the great replacement theory. And conservative media outlets, such as Fox News, have disseminated them to millions of viewers. But are the xenophobic ideas recently expressed at Nationals Park limited to a small number of extremists, or are they also endorsed by the broader public? If the latter, how do political and media elites contribute to their spread? To answer these questions, our team …

Tesla increases Actually Smart Summon speed by 33% in new FSD update

Tesla increases Actually Smart Summon speed by 33% in new FSD update

Tesla is rolling out FSD V14.3.3 today, and among the changes is a 33% speed increase to Actually Smart Summon — the feature now tops out at 8 mph, up from the 6 mph cap (less impressive when you put it like that). The speed bump is part of a broader update (software version 2026.14.6.6) that also merges the Spring 2026 software features with the FSD branch for the first time. Actually Smart Summon gets faster Actually Smart Summon (ASS) has been one of Tesla’s most polarizing features since it launched in September 2024. It allows a Tesla to navigate a parking lot autonomously to come pick up the owner or drive to a pin they drop on the map. The problem has always been speed. At 6 mph, the car crawled through parking lots so slowly that it was often faster to just walk to the vehicle. In busy retail environments, other drivers would stack up behind the Tesla, creating awkward situations. Advertisement – scroll for more content You also need to always keep …

A simple at-home sexual fantasy exercise increases pleasure and reduces distress

A simple at-home sexual fantasy exercise increases pleasure and reduces distress

A new study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine provides evidence that repeatedly engaging in structured sexual fantasies can improve a person’s sexual well-being and desire. Researchers found that writing about erotic scenarios a few times a week tends to reduce sexual distress and performance worries while increasing overall sexual pleasure. These findings suggest that simple cognitive exercises done at home can act as an effective tool for enhancing relationship intimacy and personal sexual health. Human sexual functioning relies heavily on where people direct their attention. Attention controls how individuals perceive and process sexual information in their environment. People can focus their attention externally on physical stimuli, but they can also direct it internally toward their own thoughts and imagination. This internal attention powers sexual fantasies. When people use their imagination to create vivid mental images, they engage cognitive processes that support emotional regulation and memory. In the context of sexuality, these internally generated mental images act as incentives that activate sexual arousal even without physical stimulation. Research suggests that a higher frequency of …

Amazonian dark earth increases tree diameter by up to 88%

Amazonian dark earth increases tree diameter by up to 88%

A patch of poor soil on a former cassava field in Amazonas turned into a small test of an old Amazonian secret. Researchers in Brazil found that tiny amounts of Amazonian dark earth, a human-made soil built up over centuries by pre-Columbian peoples, gave two native tree species a clear early advantage in degraded land. In the first 180 days after planting, pink trumpet tree seedlings grew up to 55% taller and developed stems 88% thicker than untreated plants. Brazilian firetree seedlings also grew faster, gaining 20% in height and 15% in stem diameter. That kind of jump matters in places where forests have been cleared, soils compacted, and recovery slowed by years of agricultural use. It also hints that the power of Amazonian dark earth, often called ADE or terra preta, may lie in more than fertility alone. “The key factor was not the amount of nutrients per se, which doesn’t vary much, but rather the microorganisms, which were quite different, especially the fungi. In plants treated with dark earth, the microbiota around the …

Palestine weekly wrap: Under cover of ceasefire, Israel increases grip | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Israel has officially agreed to ceasefires in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. But that has not meant any de-escalation, as Israeli forces and settlers press further into Palestinian-administered areas of the occupied West Bank, deeper into civilian space in Gaza, and more aggressively into the heart of occupied East Jerusalem. The pattern, documented across multiple fronts this week – including a surge of strikes in Lebanon despite the announced extension of the ceasefire there – suggests that ceasefires have functioned less as true pauses in hostilities than as cover for accelerated fact-making on the ground. It was against this backdrop that Palestinians in the West Bank and, for the first time since 2006, in part of Gaza, went to the polls on Saturday in municipal elections – despite many Palestinians doubting that these votes would be able to bring about change. Generative AI increases risks of cyberattacks and data leaks

Generative AI increases risks of cyberattacks and data leaks

Machine-learning systems already shape ordinary parts of life, from spam filters to product recommendations and social media feeds. Now a newer push is underway. It is folding generative AI into those systems to write code, label data, explain decisions, and even help make them. That may sound efficient. Micheal Lones is not convinced it is wise. In a paper published in the journal Cell Press Patterns, the Heriot-Watt University computer scientist argues that plugging large language models into machine-learning workflows can make those systems harder to understand, harder to audit, and more vulnerable to security failures, legal trouble, bias, and bad decisions. His central point is not that generative AI has no use in machine learning. Instead, it is that the tradeoffs are being underestimated. “Machine-learning developers need to be aware of the risks of using GenAI in machine learning and find a sensible balance between improvements in capability and the risks that might come with that,” Lones says. “Given the current limitations of generative AI, I’d say this is a clear example of just …

ChatGPT Increases Data Collection by 70%: 2026 Privacy Report

A recent analysis by Surfshark highlights a striking 70% increase in data collection practices among AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, over the past year. Notably, ChatGPT now gathers 17 out of 35 possible data types, ranging from search history to health metrics, marking a significant expansion from prior years. This shift reflects a broader industry trend, with 70% of AI chatbots now collecting user location data compared to just 40% a year ago. While these practices are often justified as essential for improving functionality and personalization, they also raise critical questions about privacy and the potential misuse of sensitive information. Explore how this growing reliance on data impacts users and the broader AI landscape. This overview will examine key findings from the study, including which platforms collect the most data and how these practices vary across the industry. Gain insight into the ethical concerns surrounding data storage and regulatory compliance, particularly for platforms like DeepSeek that operate outside established privacy frameworks. By understanding these dynamics, you can better navigate the evolving relationship between AI technologies and …

Samsung’s U.S. Price Increases Add to Concerns About Rising Apple Device Costs

Samsung’s U.S. Price Increases Add to Concerns About Rising Apple Device Costs

Samsung raised the prices of several of its smartphones and tablets in the United States overnight, likely due to increasing costs caused by ongoing memory shortages. As shared by PhoneArena, the 512GB Galaxy Z Flip increased by $80 from $1,219.99 to $1,299.99, while the S25 Edge and S25 FE went up $80 and $40, respectively. Samsung did not increase the cost of its current-generation S26 smartphones because those were priced higher than the prior-generation models from launch, but the company did also increase the cost of the 512GB and 1TB Galaxy Z Fold 7 earlier this month. Samsung’s tablet prices increased for the full U.S. lineup, including the latest Galaxy Tab S11 and the Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra models. The base models are $100 more expensive at $900 for the S11 and $1,299 for the S11 Ultra, while higher-end models went up even more. The 1TB S11 Ultra is now $1,899.99, which is a $280 increase. Samsung didn’t comment on the price increase, but the quiet price hike suggests that Samsung is going to need …

Drumming with friends increases oxytocin levels in children, study finds

Drumming with friends increases oxytocin levels in children, study finds

A study in Japan found that elementary school girls show an increase in the levels of the hormone oxytocin in saliva when they participate in drum circles with their friends. Participation in drum circles with strangers did not affect oxytocin levels. Cortisol levels did not change after these activities. The paper was published in Brain and Behavior. Oxytocin and cortisol are two important hormones that play key roles in how the body responds to social situations and stress. Oxytocin is sometimes called the “love hormone” because it is involved in bonding, trust, and social connection. It is released during activities such as hugging, childbirth, breastfeeding, and positive social interactions. Oxytocin tends to promote relaxation, reduce anxiety, and strengthen interpersonal attachment. Cortisol, in contrast, is known as the “stress hormone” and is released in response to physical or psychological stress. It helps mobilize energy by increasing blood sugar and preparing the body for a “fight-or-flight” response. Short-term increases in cortisol are adaptive and help individuals cope with immediate challenges. However, chronically elevated cortisol levels can have …
