Trump threatens Iran’s infrastructure as reports emerge of downed U.S. F-35

Significant sections of the B1 Bridge are seen destroyed after an airstrike attributed to the United States and Israel targeted the site near Tehran, in Karaj, Iran, on April 03, 2026. Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty Images U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to destroy Iran’s bridges and power plants, saying the “New Regime leadership knows what has to be done, and has to be done, FAST!” in a Truth Social post. Trump did not elaborate on what needed to be “done,” but said the U.S. “hasn’t even started destroying what’s left in Iran.” Hours later, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reportedly claimed that a U.S. F-35 fighter jet was shot down over central Iran. Images of debris posted on Telegram included a photo that appeared to show the words “U.S. Air Forces in Europe” on what looked like a plane’s tail section. The U.S. Central Command, which oversees the region, and Iranian authorities did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication. Read more U.S.-Iran war news Trump’s latest threat …

Warner, Schiff probe potential insider trading in government

Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.). Nathan Posner | Anadolu | Tom Williams | CQ-Roll Call, Inc | Getty Images Sens. Mark Warner, D-Va., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif., demanded answers on potential insider trading in government in a letter sent Thursday to the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Defense inspector general. The senators cited public reporting of “large positions in equities and equity-linked derivatives” being built up before major policy announcements, such as decisions related to the Iran war and President Donald Trump’s tariffs agenda. And they suggested those instances indicate “federal officials are disclosing material nonpublic information for financial gain.” “Recent reports of equity trading that occurred shortly before significant government policy announcements suggest that federal officials are disclosing material nonpublic information for financial gain,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter to SEC Chair Paul Atkins and Pentagon IG Platte Moring. “These actions undermine public interest and market integrity, and demand oversight by each of your respective authorities, as well as by Congress.” The letter …

Senate advances deal to fund agency with TSA

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) speaks to members of the media outside the Senate Chamber after passing a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill by unanimous consent at the U.S. Capitol Building on April 2, 2026 in Washington, DC. Andrew Harnik | Getty Images The Senate on Thursday advanced a deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security — including the Transportation Security Administration — taking a step toward ending the shutdown that had disrupted air travel for much of the last month. The legislation passed in a pro forma session — a brief meeting of either congressional chamber where legislative business typically does not take place — as lawmakers are out of town on a two-week recess. The House, which met in its own pro forma session later Thursday morning, did not take up the measure, meaning the partial government shutdown will likely extend through the weekend. The House is next due to meet April 6 in a pro forma session, and neither chamber is scheduled to return in full until the …

GOP leaders boost two-track approach to funding DHS

U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), joined by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), speaks to members of the media following the Republican Senate Policy Luncheon at the U.S. Capitol on October 07, 2025 in Washington, DC. Kevin Dietsch | Getty Images News | Getty Images Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Wednesday backed a two-track plan to fund the Department of Homeland Security, paving the way to fund the Transportation Security Administration in the near-term while punting debate over the agency’s more controversial immigration enforcement functions.  The announcement amounts to a reversion back to the bill the Senate passed last week that would have funded all of DHS except for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and parts of Customs and Border Protection. Democrats have called for changes to immigration enforcement practices before funding those sub-agencies. Initial DHS funding for most of the department would be followed by a second measure using a Senate procedure known as budget reconciliation for ICE And CBP, the Republican leaders said …

Republicans balk at Senate Democrats’ DHS shutdown counteroffer

Republicans balk at Senate Democrats’ DHS shutdown counteroffer

Republicans on Wednesday balked at a Democratic counteroffer to reopen the Department of Homeland Security, as lawmakers and the White House scramble to strike a deal before a scheduled two-week recess begins on Friday ahead of a busy U.S. travel week for spring breaks and the Easter holiday. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told reporters on Wednesday there was “no point” in Republicans issuing another response to Democrats’ counter and said the Senate would vote later that day on the GOP proposal unveiled earlier this week. “It’s not even close to being real,” Thune said of the counteroffer. “They know better. They’re asking for things that have already been turned down. So it just seems like they’re going in circles, spinning, spinning.” The White House criticized Democrats for their role in the negotiations. “It’s laughable that Democrats are now demanding more reforms to an agency they still refuse to fund,” a White House official via email on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity. “This latest stunt from the Democrats proves they are not interested …

K.C. Alfred | The San Diego Union | Getty Images Senate Republicans and the White House appear near to a deal to fund most of the Department of Homeland Security and end the partial government shutdown as the shutdown’s second month leads to worsening airport delays. Talks are still underway, but “this deal seems to be acceptable,” a White House official speaking on condition of anonymity said Tuesday. President Donald Trump has said he wants to not only fund DHS but include other changes such as prohibitions on transgender care and a voter-ID measure. Democrats, however, say they’re not satisfied with the Republicans’ proposal. At a swearing-in ceremony for Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on Tuesday, Trump said he would “take a good hard look” at the compromise funding proposal. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said at a press conference Tuesday that “Democrats have …

U.S. could end Iran military operations ‘right now’ but staying longer

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a Women’s History Month event in the East Room of the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., March 12, 2026. Evan Vucci | Reuters President Donald Trump on Friday said the U.S. could end Iran military operations “right now” and leave Tehran unable to rebuild its military capabilities for a decade. But that’s not “an acceptable situation,” Trump told MS Now’s Stephanie Ruhle in a phone interview. “If we left right now, it would take them at least 10 years to rebuild, but rebuild they will,” Trump said in the roughly 15-minute call. “If we stay longer, they’ll never rebuild,” he said. Trump’s comments came after multiple news outlets reported that the Pentagon is sending up to 2,500 more Marines to the Middle East from San Diego. It’s the second reported deployment of thousands of U.S. troops to the region in the past week. Trump said in the Oval Office on Thursday that he would not put boots on the ground in Iran. Later that same day, Israeli Prime …

U.S., Israel winning but Iran revolution needs ground component

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday said “Iran is being decimated” as the U.S. and Israel target its ballistic missile and nuclear programs from the air — but he added that meaningful regime change will require a “ground component.” “You don’t want to replace one ayatollah with another,” Netanyahu said at a press conference. “You don’t want to replace Hitler with Hitler.” He said that the Iranian people must ultimately “rise to the moment.” “We can create the conditions, but they have to, you know, they have to exploit those conditions at a certain point,” he said. A revolution cannot come “only from the air,” he went on. “You can do a lot of things from the air, and we’re doing [them,] but … there has to be a ground component as well.” Read more CNBC politics coverage His remarks left open the possibility that such on-the-ground action may take many forms. “There are many possibilities for this ground component, and I take the liberty of not sharing with you all those possibilities.” The …

U.S. counterterrorism director Joe Kent resigns over Iran war

Joe Kent, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, testifies during the House Homeland Security Committee hearing titled “Worldwide Threats to the Homeland,” in Cannon building on Wednesday, December 11, 2025. Tom Williams | Cq-roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent on Tuesday announced he will resign in response to the Trump administration’s war against Iran. “I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war,” Kent said in a letter addressed to President Donald Trump, that was posted on Kent’s personal X account. Kent, a promoter of far-right conspiracy theories whom the Senate narrowly confirmed for the director role last July, accused the president of being deceived by Israel into supporting the war. “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby,” Kent wrote in his letter. Trump disputed Kent’s claims later Tuesday. “I always thought he was a nice guy, but I always thought he was weak on security,” Trump told reporters …

Trump slams NATO allies for not joining Iran war effort

Trump slams NATO allies for not joining Iran war effort

President Donald Trump on Tuesday slammed the U.S.’ NATO allies over their reluctance to get involved in the Iran war, before asserting that the U.S. does not need any help with its ongoing military operations. The alliance of 32 European and North American nations is “making a very foolish mistake,” Trump said in the Oval Office during a meeting with the prime minister of Ireland, which is not a NATO member. Trump, a longtime NATO critic who has accused the organization of taking advantage of the U.S.’ spending and military strength, called the members’ hesitance to join the Iran war “a great test, because we don’t need them, but they should have been there.” Trump has claimed in recent days that numerous countries would be joining a coalition to aid the U.S. in Iran, including by helping to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route that has been choked off amid the war. He has called on “the Countries of the World that receive Oil through the Hormuz Strait” to “take care …
