Starmer says unaware of security lapse when appointing Mandelson

Downing Street on Tuesday denied a claim from a former official that it had applied pressure on civil servants to approve the appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK envoy to Washington and seemed to dismiss security concerns. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer remained mired in a scandal over his decision to appoint Mandelson as Britain’s envoy to the United States before sacking him last year over links to the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Olly Robbins, the most senior foreign ministry official until he was fired last week over the scandal, told MPs Tuesday that Starmer’s office had a “dismissive attitude” towards the security vetting for its US envoy pick. There was a “very strong expectation … coming from Number 10 (Downing Street) that he (Mandelson) needed to be in post and in America as quickly as humanly possible”, Robbins told a watchdog parliamentary committee. “My office, the foreign secretary’s office, were under constant pressure, there was an atmosphere of constant chasing.” Read more‘Lame excuse’: British papers not convinced by PM Starmer’s Mandelson defence …

Reform candidate calls for mass deportation of Muslims

Nigel Farage has been urged to drop a Reform UK candidate who called for “every Muslim” to be deported from Britain because the public cannot tell them apart from terrorists. Kate Michaela, who is standing in Adur district council, in West Sussex, on May 7, shared several offensive posts, including one that said “every Muslim must leave the UK by 2030”. The Reform candidate also shared a post by Tommy Robinson, the far-Right activist, describing Yvette Cooper, the Foreign Secretary, as a “dumb b—-” who was allowing Islam to “take over Britain”. Ms Michaela, a beauty salon owner, also reposted a Kremlin conspiracy theory that linked Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted paedophile. Social media post The Labour Party and the Conservatives have both demanded that Mr Farage remove Ms Michaela from his candidate list and stop any funding or resources for her campaign. Anna Turley, the chairman of the Labour Party, said: “The comments made by this Reform UK candidate are racist, simple as that. “For Nigel Farage and Reform …

‘Lame excuse’: British papers not convinced by PM Starmer’s Mandelson defence – Press Review

PRESS REVIEW – Tuesday, April 21: British broadsheets and tabloids mock Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s address to the House of Commons, in which he defended himself over the Peter Mandelson vetting scandal. In France, former PM Gabriel Attal talks about “the love of his life”, but a conflict of interests could be on the table. Finally, hostile divorces lead to fights over unexpected objects. British papers are reacting to PM Keir Starmer’s latest address to the House of Commons, a week after he learned that his pick for US ambassador, Peter Mandelson, had failed security vetting. The Daily Mirror headlines with “They chose not to tell me”, referring to Starmer blaming other officials for keeping him in the dark. Morning Star writes that the “lame excuse fails to convince”. The Daily Mail‘s headline reads “It’s everyone’s fault but his”, adding that “Starmer finally admits he was wrong to appoint Mandelson – but still won’t resign”. In his address, Starmer said: “I know my story sounds incredible”. Metro answers him in its headline: “Incredible? Yes, prime minister”. The Daily …

Mandelson was targeted by Russian states intelligence over a period of decades (Image: Getty) Lord Mandelson spent decades in the crosshairs of Russian state intelligence, The Express understands, with security services allegedly fully aware of his status long before Sir Keir Starmer handed him Britain’s most prized diplomatic posting. Moscow’s interest in Mandelson intensified after he took up the role of European Commissioner for Trade in 2004, sources said, and had been a known concern within the intelligence community for years before his Washington appointment. Despite that, and despite a due diligence process that surfaced his connections to both Russia and China, he was still installed in the role — one that brings its occupant into daily proximity with the most powerful administration on earth. Epstein under the microscope Russian intelligence services are also understood to have kept a close watch on Mandelson’s association with Jeffrey Epstein — the American financier and serial child sex offender who died in a New York jail cell in 2019 awaiting trial on trafficking charges. That relationship ultimately proved …

Sarah Ferguson ‘says no to interview’ on show that triggered Andrew’s downfall | Royal | News

Sarah Ferguson has reportedly been offered the opportunity to take part in tell-all interviews, but has turned them down. One is believed to have been a chance to interview with BBC’s Newsnight, the same show that broadcasted Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s infamous interview in 2019. It was widely considered a public relations disaster. Andrew sat down for the explosive chat with Newsnight journalist Emily Maitlis. It has since been described as one of the worst PR attempts in history, after he sought to salvage public opinion over his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Both Fergie and Andrew deny any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. In the one on one, the former prince remained unapologetic, describing Epstein’s behaviour as “unbecoming”. He also famously claimed he could not sweat because he had a medical condition. The interview was the start of Andrew’s massive decline in the eyes of the British public, it is thoughtl leading to a public backlash and his eventual downfall. Starmer sacks Foreign Office chief ‘to save himself’

Starmer sacks Foreign Office chief ‘to save himself’

Sir Keir Starmer has been accused of sacking the top civil servant in the Foreign Office to save his own position. The Prime Minister fired Sir Olly Robbins, the Foreign Office permanent under-secretary, over the Mandelson vetting fiasco on Thursday night after he and Yvette Cooper, the Foreign Secretary, withdrew their confidence in him. Sir Olly’s departure came hours after news broke that Lord Mandelson had failed the enhanced vetting process for his appointment as ambassador to the US, but was given the post anyway after civil servants dismissed the findings. Sir Keir is now facing calls to resign from all three of Britain’s main opposition leaders, who have accused him of dismissing Sir Olly to prolong his own political survival. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, said: “[The Government is] all over the place on this – it is totally unbelievable and Robbins, he’s the sacrificial lamb in an attempt to try and save the Prime Minister, and it just isn’t good enough.” Kemi Badenoch, the head of the Tories, said: “Keir Starmer …

SNL skewers Melania Trump over ‘insane’ Epstein statement: ‘Gonna make everyone way more suspicious’

Saturday Night Live kicked off its latest show, riffing on both First Lady Melania Trump’s out-of-the-blue Jeffrey Epstein message and the so-far unsuccessful peace negotiations between Iran and the U.S. The show’s cold open began with Ashley Padilla playing White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who is preparing President Donald Trump’s infamous tweet threatening to destroy the entire Iranian civilization ahead of the two-week ceasefire agreement. After dismissing the press secretary, Trump — played once again by James Austin Johnson — makes a call to Tiger Woods as played by Kenan Thompson for a quick laugh about the golfer’s recent DUI scandal. The “president” hangs up on Thompson’s Woods, after which the president’s phone rings. The number isn’t one he recognizes. “Who’s this? I don’t recognize the number,” the faux Trump says. Saturday Night Live’s April 11 cold open featured James Austin Johnson as President Donald Trump speaking to Chloe Fineman’s First Lady Melania Trump about her upcoming Epstein remarks (NBC/screengrab) Upon answering, he is greeted by Chloe Fineman’s take on First Lady Melania Trump. …

No, Emmanuel Macron did not share a (fake) photo of Melania Trump with Jeffrey Epstein

In the wake of recent tensions between Trump and the Macrons, a false claim has surfaced online. Since April 6, a wave of Spanish-speaking social media posts has alleged that the French President “ridiculed” Trump by sharing an “image of his wife alongside Jeffrey Epstein”. The posts feature a purported leaked image from the Epstein files appearing to show disgraced financier Epstein, who died in prison in 2019, embracing and kissing Melania Trump. One specific post, shared on X on April 8, has already amassed nearly six million views. No publication from Macron One of the first to circulate the rumour appears to be Egyptian journalist Nabil Omran, who posted the image in question to Facebook on April 5 with the caption, “Macron avenges his dignity.” This image was shared by Egyptian journalist Nabil Omran on his Facebook account. “Macron avenges his dignity… He publishes a photo of Trump’s wife […] with her lover,” the text reads. © Nabil Omran / The Observers This is a direct reference to the controversy sparked by Donald Trump’s …
