This week’s Micro Softy concerns two fellows locked in the trunk of a car.   Here’s the story: Jimmy the Mooch had borrowed money from loan shark Chicago Fats. Fats had also loaned Tony Two-Toes a lot of money. Like Jimmy, Tony did not pay back Fats back. Purely as a business decision, Fats had to make examples of them. So he had his goons grab Jimmy and Tony and lock them in the trunk of a 1960 Lincoln Continental. The trunk was sealed and no air could get in or out. There was no trunk release inside. The trunk was also encased in thick, impenetrable material so neither gunfire nor repeated jabs with a tire iron could pierce it. In the airtight trunk, both Jimmy and Tony were soon gasping for air. Tony eventually succumbed to asphyxiation and took his last breath. But Jimmy was able to survive longer. Used coffee grounds contain oils that can serve as a raw material for biodiesel. A one-hour process recovered most of the available oil with far fewer impurities than a standard laboratory method. The remaining plant fibers stayed largely intact, allowing them to be used for other fuels and useful chemicals. Coffee grounds carry more energy than their trip to the trash suggests. Packed with oils and plant fibers, the waste can support biodiesel production while leaving useful material behind for other fuels and chemicals. A team from Universitat Rovira i Virgili tested how to remove that oil quickly without damaging the remaining biomass. The work identifies moderate conditions that recover most of the oil with fewer impurities than a standard laboratory method. Spent coffee grounds are produced on a vast scale. Global coffee bean production reaches about 10 million tonnes each year. Only around 10% of the coffee cherry fruit enters the beverage, while the rest becomes solid residue. Three UK schools were plunged into lockdown on Tuesday as armed police swarmed a street following reports of a “person with a weapon”. Officers were called to Bell Farm Way Hersham, Surrey at around 3pm, with armed police among those dispatched due to reports that a weapon was involved. Road closures were also put in place along Bell Farm Way as officers responded to the incident. Police arrived at the scene within eight minutes of the initial 999 call and detained two 18-year-old men. Both were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and remain in police custody. Three Rivers Academy temporarily went into lockdown as a precaution while officers carried out their initial enquiries. The lockdown has since been lifted and students have been allowed to return home. Three Rivers Primary School and Toad Hall Nursery, Walton-on-Thames, also placed themselves into lockdown following communication with Three Rivers Academy and implemented their own safeguarding procedures.
