12 private royal living rooms: Princess Anne’s modest home, Princess Kate’s ‘museum’ & more

It may be hard to think of members of the royal family doing ordinary things like reading to their children on the sofa or relaxing in front of the television, but behind closed doors, they do exactly that, spending time in their private living rooms.  While some royal residences have the most amazing sitting rooms with ample space, high ceilings and decadent décor, others are much humbler, like Princess Anne’s relatable lounge, which went viral when a picture was shared during the pandemic of her and her husband Sir Timothy Laurence watching a rugby match in their modest room.  Then, we’ve got the impressive living spaces of European royalty with a distinctly formal feel, including bold colours and gilded touches. In stark contrast to the pared-back and modern look at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Montecito mansion, which they share with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.   Keep scrolling to see all of these and more… Harry and Meghan’s lounge is stylish and modern Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s living room at Montecito mansion The …

Beige Book Confirms Uncertainty, Fuel Costs Surged On Iran War As Economy Grew At “Slight To Modest” Pace

US economic activity continued to increase at a “slight-to-modest” pace across most regions as the war with Iran generated a new wave of uncertainty and higher energy costs, the Federal Reserve said. The just released Beige Book – which featured information compiled by the New York Fed and collected through April 6, capturing the early effects of the war on the US economy – was the first one to discuss the state of the US economy after the Iran war started, and came at time when gas prices sstayed above $4/gal for two weeks after the biggest monthly jump in decades, with March fuel spending up 16% according to Bank of America card spending data. So far, Bank of America said that discretionary spending remains resilient—but risks rise if Hormuz disruptions persist. The Fed agreed, with the Beige Book reporting that overall economic activity increased at a slight to modest pace in eight of the twelve Federal Reserve Districts, while two Districts reported little change (San Francisco and St Louis), and two Districts reported slight to modest declines …

March Google core update brings modest gains for news websites

Google search results for ‘Strait of Hormuz’ search including The Guardian, The Independent and ITV News on 10 April 2026 The Guardian, Money Saving Expert, Substack and The New York Times appear to have been the biggest winners from Google’s latest core update, according to new Sistrix data. But overall there was “little impact” on news websites, SEO consultant Barry Adams told Press Gazette. Google described the rollout as “a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites”, the standard wording for its core algorithm updates when there is not a specific behaviour being targeted. It rolled out between 27 March and 8 April, following quickly behind a separate update designed to target spam sites. Sistrix has now shared data showing how the search visibility index scores of major UK and US news websites changed during that period. In the UK, The Guardian saw the greatest absolute visibility gain of 9.014 points, rising to 228.076 – already by far the highest visibility score for a newsbrand. The …

Melania’s robotic ‘modest proposal’

Melania’s robotic ‘modest proposal’

(RNS) — This week the White House debuted a humanoid robot that walks and talks, and — according to Melania Trump, who introduced the machine — is a prototype for a “teacher” named Plato who will always be “patient and available” in offering the entire corpus of human knowledge in the comfort of your own home. Three hundred years ago, Jonathan Swift satirized such chimerical and anti-humanistic applications of human knowledge in “Gulliver’s Travels.” Among the places Gulliver visits is a scientific academy where a giant machine containing the inventor’s entire vocabulary is spun and turned to create phrases and sentences: basically a large language model for its time. Elsewhere in the book, Gulliver witnesses the uses of instruments that kill, rather than heal, their subjects, and encounters a race of creatures who achieve the foolish human goal of immortality, to disastrous results. An Anglo-Irish clergyman, dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and author of volumes of wry poetry, political pamphlets and witty satire, Swift wasn’t only a satirist, but one whose ends and means were …

Top 9 Indonesian fashion labels to know now – modest wear to modern style

Top 9 Indonesian fashion labels to know now – modest wear to modern style

Indonesia is increasingly making headlines in a fashion landscape that refuses to be boxed in. While traditional wear and modest fashion remain important pillars, a growing number of Indonesian designers are rewriting the narrative with clothing made for the modern, multifaceted woman while weaving in elements of heritage and culture. Spanning everything from clean-lined silhouettes and tailored staples to flowing dresses and statement prints, these labels cater to a wide range of aesthetics and occasions. Beyond design, many also place emphasis on thoughtful construction, ethical production, and price points that remain accessible relative to quality, making them all the more appealing to consumers burned out on fast fashion.  1. CALLA THE LABEL Founded in 2017, Calla The Label takes its name and inspiration from the calla lily flower, reflecting a vision rooted in elegance and quiet strength. The brand was conceived with the intention of creating designs that stand out visually, particularly against the dominance of earthy tones, greyscale, and muted pastels often seen in contemporary wardrobes. Modest weight loss may form new and healthier fat cells, study finds

Modest weight loss may form new and healthier fat cells, study finds

Weight loss is often described as a reset. Your blood sugar can improve. Your risk of diabetes and heart disease can fall. Yet a stubborn question has lingered for years: does your fat tissue truly heal, or does it keep a “memory” of obesity even after the scale drops? A new study from the University of Southern Denmark takes that question seriously and examines it up close, cell by cell. Using advanced single-cell analyses, researchers tracked what happens inside fat tissue during modest weight loss and after major weight loss following gastric bypass surgery. The team reports that after large weight loss, fat tissue in these patients largely resembled the lean state. The findings appear in Nature Metabolism. The work was led by Assistant Professor Anne Loft, Associate Professor Jesper Grud Skat Madsen, and Professor Susanne Mandrup. All three are based at the Center of Excellence ATLAS, which focuses on the molecular changes in liver and fat tissue during obesity and weight loss. Their goal is practical: obesity-driven dysfunction in these tissues helps fuel metabolic …

A Muslim-owned thrift shop blends modest fashion, faith and sustainability

A Muslim-owned thrift shop blends modest fashion, faith and sustainability

NEW YORK (RNS) — Kadjahtou Balde has a hard time parting with some of the vintage gems that make it into her Harlem thrift shop — a silk skirt adorned with traditional Palestinian embroidery, a pink wool sweater and an embellished blazer in perfect condition. “Look at the level of detail on this abaya,” she said while unfurling a black dress handstitched with turquoise geometric designs, a type of garment often worn by Muslim women. “It’s so beautiful, I kind of wish I could keep it.”  Balde has long been an avid thrifter and sustainable fashion enthusiast. But even in a city with a bounty of vintage and thrift shops, she couldn’t always find pieces that fit her needs as a Muslim woman who dresses modestly — and fashionably. So when her father asked for help revamping his struggling Harlem gift shop last year, Balde knew a thrift store that celebrated modest fashion could become a much needed space. “My dad told me that he was tired,” Balde said. “I decided that I want to …

Brain scans reveal an emotional advantage for modest people

Brain scans reveal an emotional advantage for modest people

Social feedback shapes human behavior and self-perception in profound ways. New research suggests that the personality trait of modesty alters how the human brain processes these social evaluations. The findings indicate that modest individuals may possess a distinct neural advantage that allows them to handle rejection more calmly while still fully appreciating acceptance. The study was published in the journal Human Brain Mapping. Most people possess an innate drive for self-enhancement. This psychological motivation leads individuals to seek positive evaluations and avoid negative ones. When a person receives feedback that validates their positive self-image, the experience is rewarding. Conversely, criticism or rejection often triggers psychological distress. This dynamic creates a challenge for emotion regulation. Individuals frequently attempt to manage the distress of negative feedback through various strategies. One common method is expressive suppression, where a person consciously hides their emotional reaction. While this might mask outward signs of upset, it often fails to alleviate the internal negative experience. Suppression can also have the unintended side effect of dampening positive emotions. This leaves many people in …
