De-Extinct Dire Wolves Ready To Breed; Bioscience Company Pushes Forward Multiple Projects

De-Extinct Dire Wolves Ready To Breed; Bioscience Company Pushes Forward Multiple Projects

Authored by Steve Watson via Modernity.news, Colossal Biosciences has announced that its de-extinct dire wolves—Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi—are now breeding-aged and the firm plans to expand the pack later this year. The development marks a significant step for the Texas-based company in its mission to restore extinct species through genetic engineering. The dire wolf pups, born in late 2024 and early 2025, represent the world’s first de-extinct animals. They have thrived in a secure 2,000-acre preserve, reaching milestones like learning to process whole deer carcasses and now showing readiness for natural breeding behaviors. “The dire wolf pack is actually breeding-aged at this point,” Matt James, Colossal’s chief animal officer, said, adding “But we will initially grow the pack through assisted reproduction while we create new, genetically diverse individuals.” The company intends to engineer two to four additional pups to boost genetic diversity before allowing full natural breeding. “The plan is to create an inter-breedable population of dire wolves in which they would eventually breed naturally to create a sustainable population of the world’s first de-extinct species,” James …

Education tool Canvas hacked, multiple US college newspapers report

LOS ANGELES: Education tool Canvas, used by schools, colleges and universities for grades and other class materials, was hacked, blocking students from accessing the application, multiple college student newspapers reported on Thursday (May 7). The Harvard Crimson reported that students could not gain access to the site beginning on Thursday afternoon with hacking group ShinyHunters saying Harvard was among “thousands of schools allegedly affected by a breach of Instructure, Canvas’ parent company”. The Crimson reported that Canvas redirected users to a message from ShinyHunters in which the group claimed responsibility and posted a list of schools that had been breached. As of late Thursday, Instructure said in a post on its status page that Canvas and other related sites had been placed “in maintenance mode” and it was “investigating an issue where some users are having difficulties logging into Student ePortfolios”.  “We anticipate being up soon, and will provide updates as soon as possible,” the company said on its website.  It did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. Sir Stephen Fry launches £100k damages claim after ‘breaking multiple bones’ in fall at O2 | Ents & Arts News

Sir Stephen Fry is claiming £100,000 in damages after falling two metres off a stage on to a concrete floor at the O2. Sir Stephen, 68, is suing CogX Festival Limited and Blonstein Events after breaking multiple bones in the fall following a talk he gave at the east London venue during the CogX festival in September 2023. High Court documents filed earlier this month said that, after giving a presentation, he fell “whilst exiting the stage backstage area”, falling “approximately two metres from the stage to the concrete floor below”. The two companies were negligent and/or failed in their statutory duty, he claimed, by “failing to ensure that the stage and backstage area were safe, adequately lit and properly protected to prevent a fall from height”. The actor and presenter’s claim is for “personal injuries and consequential losses up to £100,000, which includes an award for pain, suffering and loss of amenity exceeding £1,000, together with interest on damages… and costs”. Attending multiple places of worship is the norm for many Americans

Attending multiple places of worship is the norm for many Americans

(The Conversation) — Most U.S. adults who attend religious services attend multiple congregations, at least occasionally, according to our new research. As sociologists who research congregational life in the United States, we fielded a nationally representative survey in 2023. We asked over 2,000 adults across many religious affiliations, and those with no religion, a variety of questions about their religious beliefs and activities. Our analysis, which was published in the Review of Religious Research, found that roughly 12% of all adults who attend services go to multiple congregations “regularly” and 45% attend multiple congregations “occasionally.” Of those who attend multiple congregations, 73% attend two congregations and 27% attend three or more, at least occasionally. Adults who attend multiple congregations are more likely to be politically liberal, whereas political conservatives are more likely to always attend one congregation. We also found that evangelical Protestants are less likely to attend multiple places of worship than Catholics. About 17% of those attending a single place of worship identified as evangelical Protestant, versus only 10% of people who attended …

Shooter at White House press dinner had multiple weapons, one officer shot

A man armed with multiple weapons charged a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night before being “taken down” by U.S. Secret Service agents, President Donald Trump said hours after he was evacuated from the event. One officer was shot, but he was “saved by the fact that he was wearing obviously a very good bulletproof vest,” Trump told reporters during a press conference in the White House briefing room. “I just spoke to the officer, and he’s doing great,” Trump said. The suspected shooter was identified later Saturday as Cole Allen of Torrance, California, a former senior law enforcement official briefed on the matter told MS NOW. The suspect is 31 years old, the Associated Press reported, citing two law enforcement officials. Photo of the suspect in the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting posted on President Donald Trump’s Truth Social account on April 25th, 2026. @realdonaldtrump | Truth Social Trump was rushed off the stage of the Washington Hilton hotel ballroom seconds after the sounds of gunfire sent attendees diving …

As it happened: Trump says ‘lone wolf’ shooter at correspondents’ dinner had multiple weapons

US President Donald Trump was rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after shots were fired at the Washington Hilton on Saturday (Apr 25), triggering panic among guests.  A suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man from California, was later apprehended, with Trump describing him as a “lone wolf” armed with multiple weapons.  A Secret Service officer was shot but was protected by a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to recover.  Police said the man will be charged with firearms and assault offences, adding that the incident appears to be isolated as investigations continue into his motive and intended target.  The annual dinner has been postponed and will be rescheduled, as Trump called for unity and urged Americans to resolve differences peacefully. Huge study reveals how Epstein-Barr virus may cause multiple sclerosis

Huge study reveals how Epstein-Barr virus may cause multiple sclerosis

Most people catch the Epstein-Barr virus, but only a small proportion become seriously ill Kateryna Kon/Shutterstock Evidence is mounting that the Epstein-Barr virus contributes to multiple sclerosis, and we’re starting to understand how. A study of more than 600,000 people has revealed that the virus hijacks our immune cells, disrupting the normal functioning of the immune system, and activates genes that increase the risk of multiple sclerosis. The virus – which most people catch at some point in their lives, but few develop complications from – seems to particularly affect a type of immune cell called B-cells, which produce antibodies against infections. “I think it’s very clear that this virus lives in B-cells,” says Kate Attfield at the University of Oxford, who wasn’t involved in the study. “It’s manipulating B-cells to its own advantage.” Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune condition, in which the body’s immune system goes rogue and attacks healthy tissues. It involves other types of immune cells, called T-cells, entering the brain and causing widespread damage, especially to the fatty substance that …
