U.S. has violated ceasefire agreement, Iran parliamentary speaker says

Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, accused the U.S. on Wednesday of violating the two-week ceasefire agreement. “The deep historical distrust we hold toward the United States stems from its repeated violations of all forms of commitments — a pattern that has regrettably been repeated once again,” Ghalibaf said in a statement posted on social media. Three parts of Iran’s 10-point ceasefire proposal have been violated, Ghalibaf said. The violations are Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon, the entry of a drone into Iranian airspace, and the denial of the Islamic Republic’s right to enrich uranium, he said. “In such situation, a bilateral ceasefire or negotiations is unreasonable,” the parliamentary speaker said. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Iran’s proposal was a workable basis for negotiations. Vice President JD Vance addressed Ghalibaf’s allegations while traveling in Hungary on Wednesday. “Ceasefires are always messy,” Vance said in response to the alleged drone incursion into Iran’s airspace. The vice president said the U.S. position is that Iran cannot enrich uranium. The ceasefire extending to Lebanon was never part …

U.S. to destroy Iran’s oil wells, Kharg Island if deal not reached

Gallo Images | Gallo Images | Getty Images U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that the U.S. will “completely” obliterate Iran’s electric generating plants, oil wells and Kharg Island if the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz is not “immediately” reopened and a peace deal is not reached “shortly.” “The United States of America is in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately “Open for Business,” we will conclude our lovely “stay” in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet “touched.”” His comments come as the Iran war enters its fifth week and …

Trump told the Financial Times on Sunday that his “preference would be to take the oil,” comparing it to the U.S. military operation in Venezuela earlier this year where the U.S. effectively gained control of the Latin American country’s oil industry, following the capture of its leader Nicolas Maduro. The Trump administration has weighed sending ground forces to the Kharg Island, according to Reuters, with one of its sources warning or such an operation being “very risky.” Tehran has the ability …

Trump can’t ‘drill, baby, drill’ his way out of this Iran oil crisis

Trump can’t ‘drill, baby, drill’ his way out of this Iran oil crisis

President Donald Trump promised to “drill, baby, drill” on the presidential campaign trail. It’s not going to bail him out of this oil crisis spurred by the war he started in Iran, lawmakers and analysts say. Trump and Republicans last year aggressively ramped up policies favorable to fossil fuels after romping to an electoral victory in 2024 on a promise to lower the cost of living, including by quelling gas prices. Their signature domestic policy bill, known as the “one big beautiful” tax and spending measure, opened up swaths of new land to oil and gas leasing. The administration has moved to slash regulations that the fossil fuel industry views as hurdles. And it has pursued an aggressive leasing schedule to get more rigs operating on federal lands and waters. Now, Trump is confronted with a crisis there’s little chance of drilling his way out of. The war in Iran has whipsawed oil markets as the Strait of Hormuz has remained largely impassible. The strait carries about 20% of the world’s oil supply. And the …

Trump’s plans to lower Iran-war oil prices aren’t working. What could.

Trump’s plans to lower Iran-war oil prices aren’t working. What could.

The Trump administration has rolled out a series of measures to attempt to blunt the blow of the Iran-driven oil-price hike, and yet prices remain stubbornly high. As the war rolls on, it is becoming clear there isn’t much the U.S. or any other government can do to provide relief from higher oil prices short of ending the conflict.  It will take a military breakthrough to get oil flowing and reduce energy prices. That means this episode is sharply different from past market crises that President Donald Trump has muddled through. A pattern of escalating political tensions followed by fast economic relief that has held through Trump’s second presidency may finally be breaking. This is a problem Trump can’t solve through economic policy. The economic math is uncompromising. The war will cut the global supply of oil by about 8 million barrels a day in March, the International Energy Agency estimated Thursday. That accounts for the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway bordered by Iran that carries as much as 20 million …

‘Don’t need to worry about it’

‘Don’t need to worry about it’

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Friday brushed aside concerns that the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz because of the Iran war, which has spiked oil prices, would continue being a problem for the U.S. and the world for much longer. Iran has been “exercising sheer desperation in the Straits of Hormuz,” Hegseth said at a Pentagon press briefing. “We have been dealing with it, and don’t need to worry about it,” he said. The price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil on Friday morning was around $93 per barrel. A day before the war began on Feb. 28, a barrel of WTI was selling for about $67. Hegseth criticized media reports that claimed that before attacking Iran, the U.S. military lacked a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which is the world’s most critical oil shipping choke point. “Of course, for decades, Iran has threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This is always what they do, hold the strait hostage,” he said. “We planned for it. We recognize it,” Hegseth told …

U.S. Navy to escort oil tankers through Strait of Hormuz when possible, Bessent says

U.S. Navy to escort oil tankers through Strait of Hormuz when possible, Bessent says

The U.S. Navy will begin escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as “militarily possible,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Sky News on Thursday. “That was always in our planning, that there’s the chance that the U.S. Navy or perhaps an international coalition will be escorting oil tankers through,” Bessent said in that interview. “My belief, that as soon as it is militarily possible, the U.S. Navy and perhaps with an international coalition, will be escorting vessels through,” he said. Bessent’s comments came as the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to shipping because of the war against Iran by the U.S. and Israel that began Feb. 28. The strait is the world’s most sensitive chokepoint for oil tankers, and its closure has caused crude oil prices to spike. The Trump administration, for more than a week, has suggested that U.S. Navy vessels would escort oil tankers through the strait without that happening. Earlier Thursday, Energy Secretary Chris Wright told CNBC in an interview that the Navy is not ready to escort …

Gas prices threaten GOP lawmakers’ plans to win on affordability

Brown | Afp | Getty Images Rising gas prices and no clear end of the Iran war are clashing with GOP plans to win the November elections on a message of affordability. Republican U.S. House lawmakers are huddled in Miami this week to figure out a legislative agenda and midterm messaging to spotlight lower prices and new tax breaks. Some lawmakers at the gathering acknowledged that the spike in gas prices — up more than 60 cents from a month ago according to AAA — is painful, but said they remain confident in President Donald Trump’s promise that the conflict in Iran will be over soon and gas prices will come back down. The morning after Trump reassured both lawmakers and markets that the war was ahead of schedule and would be over soon, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., echoed that the war is “nearly completed” and …

Trump says Iran war will end ‘very soon’

Trump says Iran war will end ‘very soon’

President Donald Trump at a press conference on Monday said the war against Iran will end “very soon,” and also said that oil prices will drop. Trump’s rosy prediction came after a weekend that saw the price of oil skyrocket to above $100 per barrel, roiling global financial markets. “We’re achieving major strides toward completing our military objective,” Trump said nine days after launching the war on Iran with Israel on Feb. 28. Trump, who with his deputies has offered shifting explanations of what the war’s objective is, did not on Monday detail his end game, instead touting military successes. “We’ve wiped every single force in Iran out, very completely,” the president said at his Trump National Doral club near Miami, where he touted the destruction of more than 50 Iranian naval ships, and decimation of its air force and anti-aircraft defenses. “They have no leadership. It’s all been blown up.” Asked if the war would end this week, Trump said, “No,” but added, “Very soon.” He proceeded to threaten further military action if he …

Kevin Dietsch | Getty Images Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Shelley Moore Capito and ranking Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse are meeting to discuss reforming the federal energy permitting process, American Petroleum Institute president Mike Sommers told CNBC. “We have both the Republican in the United States Senate … Shelley Moore Capito, and the Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse, who [are] responsible for permitting reform, finally meeting again to discuss how we get this done this year,” Sommers told CNBC. A person familiar with the negotiations, granted anonymity to discuss the details, said they “will be talking frequently this week about permitting since negotiations are back on,” but was unaware of any designated meeting time. The person noted committee staff are negotiating regularly. Capito, R-W.V., and Whitehouse, D-R.I., talking regularly comes after Democrats publicly announced a thaw in permitting talks. Democrats walked away from talks last year after the Trump administration ordered …
