Olivia Rodrigo Slams 'Deeply Disturbing' White House Deportation Video Using Her Song

Olivia Rodrigo at an Oscars after-party earlier this year Olivia Rodrigo has said she was “disturbed” to see Donald Trump’s administration using her videos to soundtrack a video montage of ICE deportations on social media. Last year, the White House and Department of Homeland Security shared a joint post on Instagram warning undocumented immigrants to leave the US or “face the consequences”, while Olivia’s song All-American Bitch was playing. “Don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda,” the Good 4 U singer wrote underneath the post at the time, in a now-deleted comment, which she was asked about during an interview with Dazed published on Thursday. “It was so deeply disturbing to see that propaganda, and the fact it was my song in there made me feel even more enraged,” the Grammy winner lamented. “What they’re doing is so awful and barbaric and cruel. I am really sad to be in a country that thinks that’s OK.” The White House’s video is still live, though it’s worth pointing out that the former Glastonbury …

Olivia Rodrigo Brands Babydoll Dress Controversy ‘Disturbing’

Olivia Rodrigo Brands Babydoll Dress Controversy ‘Disturbing’

Olivia Rodrigo has hit back at criticism over her new era’s signature look. In recent history, the chart-topping singer has been incorporating babydoll dresses – a mini-length style of dress with a loose, body-skimming fit – into her regular style, including on stage, in paparazzi pictures and in the music video for her number one hit Drop Dead. The babydoll dress has long been a controversial look, with past critics voicing concerns that it presents the wearer as submissive and infantilises the women who sport them. Since she’s begun wearing babydoll dresses more regularly, Olivia has been met with similar criticism, which she has now addressed for the first time. During an interview on The New York Times’ Popcast, the Grammy winner admitted that the discourse had made her “so upset” – not because her feelings were hurt by what has been said about her, but what it all indicated about the culture. “What’s really, like, disturbing is, I feel like I have worn outfits that are maybe revealing on stage. I’ve been on stage …

Olivia Rodrigo’s Baby-Doll Dress Was a Rorschach Test

Olivia Rodrigo’s Baby-Doll Dress Was a Rorschach Test

Earlier this month, to celebrate a Spotify-streaming milestone, the singer Olivia Rodrigo held an intimate concert in Barcelona while wearing a certain outfit: a floral baby-doll dress, pink bloomers, and knee-high leather boots. The getup almost immediately set off an online maelstrom. Some commenters accused her of dressing like a “sexy baby” and promoting “pedo core” (short for “pedophilia core”); others defended her right to dress however she pleases. Rodrigo, though, appeared to have specific references in mind: In a recent interview, she noted that she’s currently inspired by artists such as Kat Bjelland and Courtney Love, who paired baby-doll dresses with punk rock in the 1990s to repudiate the fetishization of girlhood. But those artists, too, were disparaged for the look back then—one reviewer in 1994 called Love’s style that of a “raddled Baby Jane whose notion of clothes-shopping is to lie in a skip outside a paedophile brothel.” And critiques of the style reached into the world of fashion more broadly. After Giorgio Armani and Anna Sui featured baby-doll dresses and pleated skirts …
