Orange EV scores record, 600 unit order as demand EVs soars

How do we know EVs are here to stay? Electric terminal brand Orange EV just announced a new, record single order that includes 600 new electric Class 8 trucks, proving that there’s a genuine market for HDEVs even without Federal incentives. If it makes cents, it makes sense, and as we enter the fourth month of war in Iran and a closed Strait of Hormuz continues to drive up oil and fuel costs, more and more heavy fleets are taking a fresh look at EVs – and the math seems to be mathing, with new Orange EV leases growing 272% over the past 12 months alone. “We have left the early adopter stage of yard electrification,” explains Kurt Neutgens, co-founder and president of Orange EV. “We’re seeing companies invest in hundreds of trucks because total cost of ownership superiority has been proven, including uptime, reliability, fuel savings, and service guarantees.” Uptime is what’s up Orange EV; via DHL. Since deploying its first-ever electric terminal truck with DHL in 2015, Orange EV has delivered more than …

The particles can suffocate fish and choke insects, threatening the food web and ecosystem as a whole.  Scientists have long pointed to previously frozen soil beginning to thaw as the potential culprit behind the contamination of rivers in northern Alaska’s remote Brooks Range, and a study recently published in the Communications Earth & Environment proves it. The research also shows two distinct ways that this thawing soil is rusting the rivers and can help scientists predict where the damage is likely to spread next.  “You’d think if any ecosystem could hide from the effects of warming and …

What are those orange balls on some power lines?

This article was originally featured on The Conversation. What are those orange balls on some power lines? – Maggie, age 8, West Chester, Pennsylvania Have you ever looked up while driving on a highway and spotted those big orange balls hanging on power lines? They look a bit like giant toy beads strung along the electric wires. What in the world are those overgrown basketballs doing up there? I’m a professor who teaches about and researches power systems, the big networks that move electricity from power plants to our homes, schools and businesses. Those big orange balls don’t help with electricity flow or improve the efficiency of the power lines, but they do have a very important job. Officially called aviation marker balls or spherical markers, they’re there to help pilots see power lines so airplanes and helicopters don’t crash into them. They’re like bright warning signs in the sky, protecting pilots, passengers and people on the ground below. Big round warning signs in the sky Power lines can be very hard to see from an …

Inside U.S. soccer’s World Cup camp at Orange County Great Park

Inside U.S. soccer’s World Cup camp at Orange County Great Park

On a recent spring morning, Championship Soccer Stadium, which sits in a corner of the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, was quiet and empty save for the dozen sprinklers quenching a newly laid grass carpet. Normally the well-used stadium is a buzz of activity. But its main tenant, the Orange County Soccer Club, which plays in the second-division USL Championship, has been temporarily evicted, left to train in the nearby park and play its final home game before the World Cup at Eddie West Field in Santa Ana, 12 miles away. (Not that it was necessarily a bad thing since the club drew a home-record crowd of 7,651 to its 3-2 win over Oakland on Saturday, which allowed it to hold onto second place in the Western Conference table.) During the next month, the nine-year-old venue will have just one occupant, the U.S. national soccer team, which has chosen the stadium as its main training base for the World Cup. The temporary change in ownership is heralded by a giant orange orb the size …

Newsom Declares Emergency In Orange County; EPA Head Says Chemical Tank Will “Likely Fail”

Newsom Declares Emergency In Orange County; EPA Head Says Chemical Tank Will “Likely Fail”

The head of the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) said Sunday that a chemical storage tank in Southern California that has forced officials to declare an emergency and prompted evacuation orders for tens of thousands residents is likely to fail. Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the EPA, told CNN’s “State of the Union” program on Sunday that the “most likely scenario” is a “low-volume release” of the tank, where officials will be able to “monitor, neutralize, and contain the threat.” “The Orange County Fire Authority is working to keep the temperature of the tank down. That is very important,” he said on CNN, referring to the fire department in the Southern California county. He said keeping the temperature under 85 degrees F is key. But, as Jack Phillips reports for The Epoch Times, Zeldin warned: “We’re being told that the tank will fail, but there are different scenarios as to what that means, the most catastrophic scenario being an explosion that results in other tanks to explode. That’s the reason why you see such a big …

Inside the thousands of ADA lawsuits filed by an Orange County law firm

Inside the thousands of ADA lawsuits filed by an Orange County law firm

Anthony Bouyer has been on a suing spree around the San Fernando Valley. On Sept. 24, the 55-year-old internet marketer confronted a counter at a hole-in-the-wall Mexican spot that was difficult to reach over in his wheelchair. He sued the business for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. In L.A. County, it was at least his 231st case of the year. At the convenience store next door, he found a produce scale out of arm’s length. He sued them too. Two shops over at another Mexican spot, he noticed a cracked parking lot and cumbersome door hardware. Owner Elia Barraza was served a day before her 53rd birthday. “This person is just suing anyone,” said her still-fuming son, Steven Barraza. “It’s just for nitpicking things.” Lawsuits under the Americans with Disabilities Act — a federal civil rights law widely known as the ADA — have long flourished in California, where a unique state law enables payouts over various infractions. The money, advocates say, is one of the few surefire ways to get businesses to make …

Benjamina Ebuehi’s recipe for orange, grapefruit and bay jelly | Dessert

Benjamina Ebuehi’s recipe for orange, grapefruit and bay jelly | Dessert

You’re never too old for jelly, and I think we should all be eating more of it. Unmoulding a jelly and immediately giving it a good wobble is by far the best bit, and makes me giggle every time. Infusing the mixture with fresh bay leaves brings a grownup feel and gentle, earthy notes. While jelly and ice-cream is a classic combination, I love this just with some lightly whipped, unsweetened cream. Orange, grapefruit and bay jelly Prep 5 minCook 20 minInfuse 30 min+Chill 4 hr+Serves 6 Neutral oil for greasing220ml freshly squeezed red grapefruit juice (from about 2 grapefruit)700ml fresh orange juice (from about 8-10 oranges)4 fresh bay leaves120g caster sugar11 gelatine leaves (I use Dr Oetker platinum grade leaf gelatine)200ml double cream Lightly grease the insides of a 1 litre jelly mould with a little neutral oil – you can skip this step if you’re serving the jelly straight from a dish or bowl. Strain the grapefruit and orange juices into a saucepan, to extract any pulp. Bash the bay leaves a bit …

A Disease That’s Killing Florida’s Orange Groves Could Make OJ a Distant Luxury

A Disease That’s Killing Florida’s Orange Groves Could Make OJ a Distant Luxury

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Whether you take it with pulp or without, you may soon be lucky just to get some OJ at all as one of the largest citrus industries in the world suffers a massive collapse. According to a bombshell new story in Slate, Florida’s once-proud orange groves have experienced a major decline in fruit production over the last few years, and the devastation is almost certainly just getting started. While there are plenty of reasons for a downturn in orange production — climate change, Donald Trump’s trade wars, suburban development — perhaps none are as ravaging as citrus greening disease, a bacterial infection that slowly chokes orange trees from the inside out. Citrus greening disease is primarily transmitted by a sap-sucking bug known as the Asian citrus psyllid. Once the psyllid starts gnawing on a defenseless orange tree, it’s pretty much a done deal; the tree’s leaves become yellowed and flaccid, and its fruit wilted and green. As the University …
