Palm Vein vs Face vs Fingerprint: Which Smart Lock Is Actually Secure?

Palm Vein vs Face vs Fingerprint: Which Smart Lock Is Actually Secure?

Biometric smart locks are increasingly integrated into home security systems, offering advanced ways to control access. Technologies like palm vein recognition, face recognition, and fingerprint recognition each bring distinct approaches to authentication. For instance, palm vein recognition relies on near-infrared light to detect unique vein patterns beneath the skin, making it highly resistant to forgery. What Are Dogs Reading in Human Gestures Like the Open Palm?

What Are Dogs Reading in Human Gestures Like the Open Palm?

How do dogs understand human gestures? Research cautions us that simple answers to questions like these can be misleading, For this and other reasons I was pleased to read a recent paper by anthrozoologist Sindhoor Pangel titled, “The open palm gesture in human–dog communication: An exploratory synthesis, Human–Animal Interactions.” In it, she stresses that perhaps we should move from asking, “Can the dog decode my gesture?” to “What happens to the dog when I make this gesture and how does this impact our relationship?” The use of an open palm held toward a dog is not novel in our interaction with dogs and is usually understood as a directive: Stop, Wait, or Stay. But her observation is that the same gesture also occurs in casual interactions in which the human does not appear to be asking the dog to do anything. Marc Bekoff: Why did you write your paper on the open palm gesture? Sindhoor Pangal: I started noticing the gesture everywhere. In fact, this paper itself carries examples of traffic cops casually using it …

Trump’s rebranding of Palm Beach airport hasn’t taken off as he planned

Trump’s rebranding of Palm Beach airport hasn’t taken off as he planned

One of Donald Trump‘s most grandiose vanity projects, a multimillion-dollar makeover of Florida‘s Palm Beach international airport into a self-aggrandizing, gold-plated transportation hub, is running into turbulence, barely a week after the first plane’s wheels touched the runway. At first glance, the rebranding of the airport less than 5 miles from his opulent Mar-a-Lago resort appears to be complete. Its website bears the name and oversized logo of the President Donald J Trump international airport, and state transportation workers were quick to erect highway signs leaving drivers in no doubt where they were heading. Yet inside the terminals, at the ticket counters and baggage halls, the change is far less noticeable. Digital signage reflects the switch, but many physical signs and infrastructure still refer to its old name of Palm Beach International (PBI). There is no clear timeline of when, or even if, new signs will be installed and PBI fully becomes DJT, the three-letter airport code using the president’s initials that will be its formal aviation industry designation starting on 18 August. Palm Beach International becomes Donald J. Trump International Airport: What to know

Palm Beach International Airport officially changed its name to Donald J. Therabody Launches CryoTherm Palm for Faster Recovery During Your Workouts

Therabody Launches CryoTherm Palm for Faster Recovery During Your Workouts

Therabody, the manufacturer behind some of the top massage guns and beauty and recovery gadgets, on Saturday announced its latest device: the CryoTherm Palm. It’s a three-in-one handheld recovery tool that resembles a dumbbell, offering dual-sided heating and cooling and a stopwatch for timed sessions.  According to Therabody, the CryoTherm Palm uses scientifically calibrated cryothermal technology that makes the device cold or hot within seconds. The company wanted a device with a similar function to its hot-and-cold wearable RecoveryTherm Cube, but more compact.  Therabody chose palm-cooling because the palms and feet have glabrous skin (smooth skin without hair follicles) with blood vessels, called arteriovenous anastomoses, that are known to rapidly exchange heat. Researchers from Stanford University performed an experiment in 2023 where they had athletes wear cooling gloves after high-intensity exercise. They found that palm cooling helped slow the rise in core body temperature, which can help with recovery, prevent potential injuries and improve athletic performance.  This palm-cooling tool was specifically developed for athletes who need instant recovery during training. Therabody teamed up with the …

Palm Springs Art Museum Refutes Whistleblower Allegations

Palm Springs Art Museum Refutes Whistleblower Allegations

The Palm Springs Art Museum in California has released a three-page statement saying that an investigation conducted in response to a whistleblower complaint alleging mismanagement and fraud found no wrongdoing by the museum. The museum declined to provide ARTnews a copy of the resulting report, which will not be publicly released. The whistleblower complaint made numerous detailed allegations. Among them are claims that the museum improperly reclassified funds in its endowment to meet cash crunches; that there is a $3 million discrepancy in the balance of the museum’s investment account; and that a former director was improperly forced out to make way to promote an internal hire after a problematic search process. The museum’s statement reveals little in the way of specifics about those allegations, but broadly says there was no wrongdoing and that while there may have been errors, there was no improper intent. Related Articles The museum retained law firm Barnes & Thornburg and forensic accounting firm RSM US to conduct the six-month investigation. Neither firm responded to a request to confirm that …

Forget Palm Beach. Wellington Has Plenty of Wealth—and All The Horses

Forget Palm Beach. Wellington Has Plenty of Wealth—and All The Horses

As much as F1 needs an equally good driver and car, equestrian sports have two extremely important variables: the horse and the rider. And unlike in F1, the second piece of the puzzle is a living, breathing, intelligent animal with its own mind and moods. “There’s two athletes you need to train,” 34-year-old Jessica Springsteen, daughter of Bruce, tells me as we sit outside in the Florida humidity by the bougainvilleas at her barn. Springsteen is an accomplished professional athlete on the elite circuit: In 2021 she won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics for team jumping on her stallion Don Juan van de Donkhoeve. She has seven horses in Wellington. Some she shows on. Others are in development: While Springsteen herself has the experience to guide a horse over jumps higher than five feet, she needs a horse that knows (and wants) to do so as well. That takes years of training. So while she’s competing in Wellington, she and her team are also preparing her next generation of equines. Unlike most athletes, …

Whistleblower Complaint Alleges Misconduct at Palm Springs Art Museum

Whistleblower Complaint Alleges Misconduct at Palm Springs Art Museum

An anonymous whistleblower has raised allegations of misconduct by leadership at California’s Palm Springs Art Museum, claiming violations of the law and institutional best practices.  The whistleblower claims that the museum improperly moved funds between various accounts in order to meet severe cash crunches. The whistleblower alleged that a former director was forced out based on trumped-up staff complaints, and that the museum failed to even interview two qualified candidates to replace him before promoting an internal candidate. Related Articles In resignation letters that were reviewed by ARTnews, two board members said they tried to get financial problems and accounting inconsistencies addressed before being stonewalled by longstanding board members. The whistleblower complaint was forwarded to ARTnews in the form of emails from July 2025 and December 2025, both of which were addressed to, among others, California Attorney General Rob Bonta and United States Attorney for the Southern District of California Adam Gordon.  Gordon’s office did not answer an emailed inquiry from ARTnews. Bonta’s office replied that it is “committed to upholding laws that protect charitable gifts and donations,” but …
