20th Anniversary iPhone to Feature Custom ‘Micro-Curved’ OLED Panel

20th Anniversary iPhone to Feature Custom ‘Micro-Curved’ OLED Panel

For its 20th-anniversary iPhone, Apple is tapping Samsung to produce a custom micro-curved OLED display that is brighter and thinner than existing panels, according to new supply chain information out of China. Apple is reportedly considering a radical redesign for the 20th-anniversary iPhone that could feature a completely bezel-less display that curves around all four edges of the device. To that end, Apple is said to be seeking from Samsung an equal-depth quad-curved panel design that uses “micro-curves” to keep the curve very shallow, as opposed to the aggressively curved “waterfall” edges of some existing Samsung panels. Apple’s preference for slightly rounded edges may ensure that the device feels softer in the hand and that swipes from the edge of the display feel more natural. It could also prevent distortion of on-screen content around the edges. The latest supply chain information comes from Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station, who also says that Apple wants a “pol-less” display from Samsung – in other words, a panel design that removes the polarizer layer that sits on top …

Eric Swalwell resignation over sex misconduct prompts Ethics panel remarks

U.S. House impeachment manager Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) delivers part of the impeachment managers’ opening argument in the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump on charges of inciting the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol, on the floor of the Senate chamber on Capitol Hill in Washington, February 10, 2021. U.S. Senate TV via Reuters The House Ethics Committee on Monday issued a rare, lengthy statement outlining its work to root out sexual misconduct in Congress, as lawmakers feel increased pressure to crack down on lawmakers’ misdeeds in the wake of two high-profile resignations. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat, and Tony Gonzales, a Texas Republican, both resigned from the House last week amid allegations ranging from sexual misconduct to assault, and some lawmakers are calling for a broader crackdown on elected official misdeeds. “The Committee on Ethics (Committee) is dedicated to maintaining a congressional workplace free from sexual misconduct and ensuring that any individuals responsible for misconduct are held responsible for their behavior,” the committee wrote in its statement. “There should be zero tolerance for …

Your old iPad or Android tablet can be your new smart home panel – here’s how

Your old iPad or Android tablet can be your new smart home panel – here’s how

Maria Diaz/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. There are many ways to make the most of old devices we no longer use. For example, I have a couple of old Fire tablets that I turned into Echo Shows for my home use. However, one of the best uses for an old tablet is to become a smart home control panel. In fact, it’s one of the easiest and cheapest upgrades you can make in your home. Also: I tested every ‘allergy-friendly’ smart home gadget – these 6 actually keep the pollen out If you have a lot of smart lights, plugs, switches, and other devices, you’ll likely benefit from adding a control panel to manage them all from one spot. Setting up an old tablet as a central control center not only breathes new life into the device but also gives you a hub that anyone at home can access. We lost £3,000 after collapse of Ikea’s solar panel installer | Consumer affairs

We lost £3,000 after collapse of Ikea’s solar panel installer | Consumer affairs

I am one of many left thousands of pounds out of pocket after signing up for solar panels via Ikea’s website late last year. Ikea had partnered with the European installer Soly, and the fact the panels were being advertised via such a well-known company gave us confidence. In February I emailed Soly to check when the installation would start and received an out-of-office notification. My next email, in March, bounced back. Phone numbers no longer worked either, though the website was still up and running. That’s when I found out that the European operation had gone bust. The partnership was still being advertised on the Ikea website, and Ikea agents assured me that Soly’s UK division was still operational. I checked the Companies House register and found that the UK arm had entered liquidation in January this year. Ikea has since quietly removed Soly but offered no advice to customers who paid deposits for installations. I’ve contacted Ikea in-store and online several times for help but received no reply. I had to find out …

RFK Jr.’s new vaccine panel rules may help sidestep court order, experts say

RFK Jr.’s new vaccine panel rules may help sidestep court order, experts say

New rules approved by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could blunt the impact of a federal judge’s order freezing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine advisory committee and putting many of its decisions on hold, experts say. Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. The changes were posted online Thursday in a new charter for the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP — the document that lays out how the panel is supposed to operate. The CDC is required to review and renew the charter every two years, although it rarely makes significant changes. The charter was posted nearly a month after a Massachusetts federal judge, in a lawsuit brought by the American Academy of Pediatrics and several other medical organizations, halted Kennedy’s remade ACIP and reversed many of the vaccine policy changes the panel had made over the last year — a move that adds further confusion over vaccine policy in the U.S. The judge said the committee’s members, many of whom …

I thought removing my side panel would cool my PC — I was wrong

I thought removing my side panel would cool my PC — I was wrong

I own a very specific PC case. Like “ludicrously specific”. The Hyte Y70 Infinite Touch is the most eye-alluring mid-tower I’ve ever owned. It’s also the most stylistically challenging case I’ve assembled, both due to its built-in touchscreen and, more importantly, its awesome-looking vertical GPU mount. The latter, fairly unique feature has caused me to make a PC-building error, which temporarily negatively impacted my home-built rig’s airflow. This being the first system I’ve ever put together with a vertically mounted graphics card, I regret not being a little more careful when setting up my latest Windows 11 PC. Because of the unique dimension demands of using a PCIe riser cable, I accidentally removed one of the rear PCIe brackets/slots from my case. And wouldn’t you know it? My desktop’s cooling has suffered as a result. Do yourself a favor when building your next PC: don’t make the following crucial case mistake. Related 8 catastrophic mistakes first-time PC builders make — and how to avoid them You can be sure nearly every PC builder has made …

Trump ballroom approved by panel, remains stalled by judge

Trump ballroom approved by panel, remains stalled by judge

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom won final planning approval on Thursday (Apr 2), but construction remains in limbo following a court order that he needs congressional approval. The National Capital Planning Commission, which has several Trump appointees on its board, greenlit the plans in an 8-1 vote. The project aims to construct a massive ballroom on the site of the White House’s East Wing – previously best known for housing the First Lady’s offices. It was demolished in September. Trump expressed his thanks in a post on his Truth social media platform, saying, “when completed, it will be the greatest and most beautiful ballroom of its kind anywhere in the world.” Planning approval does not, however, mean construction can go ahead unchecked. On Tuesday, a federal judge ordered a halt to construction, saying Trump needed congressional approval.  The president is “steward” of the White House, Judge Richard Leon wrote. “He is not, however, the owner!” Will Scharf, the commission’s chairman and a political ally of Trump, addressed the lawsuit before the vote, …

Activist Mahmoud Khalil Wants Ex-Justice Department Official off Panel of Judges Weighing His Appeal

Activist Mahmoud Khalil Wants Ex-Justice Department Official off Panel of Judges Weighing His Appeal

NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers for Mahmoud Khalil, the former Columbia University graduate student fighting deportation, have asked Judge Emil Bove to step aside from an appellate panel that could weigh in on his case because of Bove’s previous role as a top Justice Department official involved in investigating student protesters. Khalil’s lawyers this week asked that the full complement of judges on the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals — minus Bove — review and reverse a January ruling by a panel of three 3rd Circuit judges that put the Trump administration one step closer to detaining and ultimately deporting the pro-Palestinian activist. As the Justice Department’s Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General, Bove “directed immigration enforcement investigations and decisions against student protesters on college campuses,” including at Columbia, Khalil’s lawyers wrote. Bove’s immigration enforcement work “demonstrates the existence, or at least the appearance of, a conflict of interest” that should disqualify him from having a say in Khalil’s appeal, they said. Bove has been a judge on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals …
