The UK’s 19 ‘safest places’ to live in a nuclear attack – full list | UK | News

Global tensions remain high with many people fearing a potential nuclear attack (Image: Getty) As global tensions remain high, there has been a renewed interest in where people would be safest in the unlikely event of a nuclear attack on the UK. The UK’s latest National Security Strategy describes the international landscape as one of “radical uncertainty”, with growing cooperation between hostile states including Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. Russia has been identified as the UK’s most significant state threat, with intelligence agencies warning of escalating “grey-zone” activities across Europe, including sabotage and interference operations. Remote and sparsely populated areas are often considered less likely to be directly affected (Image: Getty) Meanwhile, tensions involving Iran, attacks on international shipping routes and concerns over nuclear proliferation continue to pose challenges to global security. While these threats are far removed from the prospect of a direct nuclear attack on Britain, it has nevertheless stirred up the need for emergency preparedness and civil defence. Many people would assume that London’s extensive Underground network would offer one of …

The literary invention that places you in the chaos of war

The literary invention that places you in the chaos of war

For more than a century now, writers have attempted to put into words what it was like to serve in the trenches of the First World War: the chaos, the horror, the futility. Ernest Hemingway famously said that “the only true writing that came through during the war was in poetry,” which conveyed metaphorically what could not yet be put into prose. After the war, his novel A Farewell to Arms (1929) and other classics such as Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front (1929) and Ford Madox Ford’s Parade’s End tetralogy (1924–28) set the standard for both literature and later film. These works stripped away the nationalist romance and confronted head-on the physical and psychological toil the war took on those who fought it. More recently, Sam Mendes’ film 1917 (2019) made headlines for representing one soldier’s journey through No Man’s Land in what, thanks to clever editing, appears to be a single, uninterrupted take. Daniel Kraus’s Angel Down (2025) takes a similar approach, accomplishing through prose what 1917 does through visuals. …

How a Citizen Science Organization Aims to Preserve the Places It Brings Tourists to Study

Deep in the Peruvian Amazon, the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area boasts enormous biodiversity—pink dolphins, rare monkeys, giant river otters, reptiles, and hundreds of birds and different types of plants. It’s also one of the most prominent examples of a government recognizing that environmental conservation doesn’t require keeping people out. That instead, it’s possible for humans to coexist with nature and help protect it. And the region’s protected status is supported, in part, by research conducted by tourists. Biologist Richard Bodmer has been welcoming visitors to his research station along the Yarapa River, on a strip of Indigenous territory between Tamshiyacu Tahuayo and another area co-managed by Indigenous communities, the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, to help track wildlife and collect other ecosystem data for decades. His guests arrive through a partnership with Earthwatch Expeditions, a tour company that connects people with scientists carrying out long-term research projects around the world and invites them to engage in “participatory science.” Earthwatch runs nearly two dozen trips: to study the ecosystems of polar bears in the Arctic, whooping cranes …

Best places to eat and drink near the L.A. Coliseum

First-timers visiting the 35,000-square-foot Mercado La Paloma, take heed: The line likely trailing out the door and into the parking lot is specifically for Holbox, the most decorated and popular among the market’s seven food vendors. Chef Gilberto Cetina’s mariscos creations are revolutionary in their freshness and jigsaw-intricate flavors. Tuna tostada, scallop aguachile, coctel mixto and smoked kanpachi taco number among must-try dishes. Other wonderful options in the mercado await without the Holbox queues. Begin at Komal, where Fátima Juárez’s quesadillas and tacos, as beautiful as they are delicious, showcase the earthy-fragrant masa she crafts daily from heirloom corn varieties, and Chichén Itzá, where the Cetina family serves lush, orange-scented cochinita pibil and other specialties from the Yucatán. The mercado is such a vital sanctuary for the city that fellow critic Jenn Harris and I ranked it number one on our recent guide to the 101 Best Restaurants in Los Angeles. Source link

Best Places to Buy Contact Lenses Online for 2026 | The Cheapest Places to Find Contact Lenses

Shopping for contact lenses online can be convenient and cost-effective, but it’s important to do some research before you order contacts online. Unlike buying in a store, you won’t have immediate access to an optometrist for guidance, so taking a few key factors into account can help ensure you get the right lenses for your needs. Prescription and brand compatibility: Before you purchase your contacts online, be sure to have a valid contact lens prescription from your eye doctor. Additionally, it’s best to stick to the brand and specification suggested by your doctor, as different materials, water content and oxygen permeability levels can affect comfort and eye health. Pricing and discounts: While online retailers often lower prices than brick-and-mortar stores, it’s worth comparing costs across multiple sites. Look for discounts on bulk orders, subscription savings or rebates from manufacturers. However, be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true, as some unauthorized sellers may offer counterfeit or expired lenses. Shipping and return policies: If you wear contacts daily, factor in shipping times to …

Paul McCartney – The Boys of Dungeon Lane review: Charming and, in places, quite sexy for an octogenarian

Inspired by a childhood spent growing up in postwar Liverpool, along with his earliest days knocking about with Beatles bandmates Ringo Starr, John Lennon and George Harrison, this is a lovely addition to an astonishing and varied career. Not to mention, one of his most insightful records. There’s less of the technical showmanship we heard on 2020’s McCartney III, which opened with an extraordinary display of blues guitarmanship on “Long Tailed Winter Bird”. But with help from 35-year-old producer Andrew Watt (whose other recent credits include the Stones, Elton John …

I found one of the most unexpected places in Wales to get a takeaway

Think of airport food and thoughts of a hastily eaten burger or a pack of sandwiches grabbed from a shop in a panic when your gate is called may come to mind. But banging Thai food? That is what’s on offer in the unlikely surroundings of the terminal building at Swansea Airport. The Gower airport has seen plenty of sights over the years, from Hurricane fighters in World War Two to the Wales Air Ambulance helicopter and passenger planes for the short-lived Air Wales airline. Now it’s in the safe hands of Swansea Airport Stakeholders Alliance and is home to flying and skydiving clubs – and the Thai Bach Express. Not only is Thai Bach the most brilliant name ever devised (in this corner of the world) for a Thai eatery, but it is also the provider of takeaway happiness in the form of great food. National Trust Names America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places for 2026

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a private nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., has released its annual list of “America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places,” which includes sites that have been targeted by the second Trump administration. Published each year since 1988, this year’s list was framed around the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and “our nation’s founding and the self-evident truth that all people are created equal,” according to a press release. Each selected site receives a one-time grant of $25,000 to “protect these historic places and enable their stories of equality to be shared for generations,” per a release. Related Articles Among those selected are two sites that have drawn the ire of the Trump administration, the Stonewall National Monument in New York, often considered the birthplace of the gay right’s movement, and the President’s House Site in Philadelphia, which served as the presidential home prior to the capital’s relocation to Washington. In January, the National Parks Service (NPS) removed placards from the President’s House Site that acknowledged the history …

It shines a light on significant places that have, in most cases, fallen into neglect and disrepair but also some that are threatened by development, environmental or political factors. This year’s list, released Wednesday, has a theme — a first — commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “We chose to focus this year on sites important to the idea that all people are created equal,” said Carol Quillen, the organization’s president. “Over time, brave people have fought for equality before the law, equal opportunity, freedom of …

Isolated places struggle with a lack of year-round flights : NPR

Isolated places struggle with a lack of year-round flights : NPR

Joe Castellana often has to drive several hours to complete the 120-mile trip from his home on the tip of Cape Cod in Provincetown, Mass., to Boston, especially during the summer. He can fly but commercial flights aren’t offered during the off-season. Provincetown’s ongoing effort to restore year-round air service is a microcosm of how difficult it can be to get commercial flights in remote places. Agata Storer for NPR hide caption toggle caption Agata Storer for NPR When Joe Castellana drives to Boston from his home in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the very northern tip of Cape Cod, he considers himself lucky if the 120-mile ride takes two hours. That, he says, is “rare, very rare.” Because while Provincetown can be desolate in the winter, it’s a tourism hot spot in the summer, when its population of 3,500 people balloons to 60,000. And during that high season, the drive to the state capital can be an extremely long slog. “When I’ve had to go to Boston, let’s say for a 10 or 11 o’clock appointment …
