Biggest study yet shows plug-in hybrids use over 300% more fuel than claimed

The largest real-world study yet, accounting for nearly a million plug-in hybrid vehicles, shows that PEVs use far more gasoline than previously claimed. The study comes just as Europe is about to change PHEV regulations, with industry lobbying to maintain the current highly inaccurate numbers. There are a lot of different types of electric vehicles out there, enough to confuse even those who follow the industry. BEV, FCEV, EREV, PHEV, and so on. We here at Electrek tend to prefer and report on battery electric vehicles, sometimes referred to as “all-electric.” But another option, favored by some, are plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), vehicles with both an internal combustion and electric powertrain existing side by side in the same car. These can either run off of a battery or a gas engine, theoretically adding flexibility and covering for the weaknesses of each powertrain. I never have to search for subtitles again thanks to this Jellyfin plugin

I never have to search for subtitles again thanks to this Jellyfin plugin

It took me a while to try Jellyfin, but I absolutely love it. However, hunting down subtitles is tedious and easily breaks immersion. Unfortunately, I find myself going down this path more often than I’d like to admit, fixing broken download links and subtitles that have drifted out of sync. In fact, for some less popular releases, entire languages may be missing. Jellyfin’s built-in subtitle support alone is inadequate to fix this, especially for non-streaming content. My ultimate solution is a combination of Bazarr and Jellyfin Bazarr plugin. The plugin makes the process feel native, while Bazarr actually handles searching, prioritizing, and updating subtitles. By simply pressing play, you now get subtitles that are synced and usable. OS Android, iOS/iPadOS, Android TV, Fire TV, Web browsers Developer Jellyfin Community Pricing model Free (open-source) Initial release December 8, 2018 Jellyfin is a free-and-open-source media-server system that lets you self-host your movies, music, TV shows, photos and more and stream them to any device without subscriptions or third-party tracking. Integrating Bazarr with Jellyfin via the plugin Installation, …

A Wikipedia Group Made a Guide to Detect AI Writing. Now a Plug-In Uses It to ‘Humanize’ Chatbots

A Wikipedia Group Made a Guide to Detect AI Writing. Now a Plug-In Uses It to ‘Humanize’ Chatbots

On Saturday, tech entrepreneur Siqi Chen released an open source plug-in for Anthropic’s Claude Code AI assistant that instructs the AI model to stop writing like an AI model. Called Humanizer, the simple prompt plug-in feeds Claude a list of 24 language and formatting patterns that Wikipedia editors have listed as chatbot giveaways. Chen published the plug-in on GitHub, where it has picked up more than 1,600 stars as of Monday. “It’s really handy that Wikipedia went and collated a detailed list of ‘signs of AI writing,’” Chen wrote on X. “So much so that you can just tell your LLM to … not do that.” The source material is a guide from WikiProject AI Cleanup, a group of Wikipedia editors who have been hunting AI-generated articles since late 2023. French Wikipedia editor Ilyas Lebleu founded the project. The volunteers have tagged over 500 articles for review and, in August 2025, published a formal list of the patterns they kept seeing. Chen’s tool is a “skill file” for Claude Code, Anthropic’s terminal-based coding assistant, which …

Are plug-in hybrids spelling the end for diesel in the UK? This is my view as an electric vehicle editor

Are plug-in hybrids spelling the end for diesel in the UK? This is my view as an electric vehicle editor

Get our weekly Drive Smart newsletter for motoring news, reviews and advice from EV editor Steve Fowler Get motoring news, reviews and advice from EV editor Steve Fowler Get our EV editor’s weekly Drive Smart newsletter After a week in which a report claimed you might struggle to fill up a diesel car in London by the end of the decade, I can categorically say that the death of diesel has been greatly exaggerated. Let’s start with the sales figures for 2025. Diesel was the least popular fuel type, with 103,906 diesel cars registered last year – down 16.6 per cent year-on-year. Meanwhile, fully electric car sales rose 23.9 per cent to 473,348, and plug-in hybrid sales jumped 34.7 per cent to 225,143. That’s still a significant number of diesel cars being added to an already sizeable fleet – and they’re likely to remain on the roads for some time. However, the shift away from diesel isn’t simply about access to fuel. Have you seen how much diesel costs these days? I spotted £1.67 per …

Plug-in Porsche models outsold ICE in Europe for the first time

Plug-in Porsche models outsold ICE in Europe for the first time

Battery-electric and plug-in hybrid Porsche models outsold its ICE-powered models on its home continent in 2025 – and nearly 1 in 3 Porsches sold was 100% electric. As we already alluded to earlier this week, Porsche’s global sales saw a significant decline in 2025, dropping more than 10% from 310,718 to “just”  279,449 units – but Porsche executives aren’t too worried. “This development is in line with our expectations, and is due to supply gaps for the 718 and Macan combustion-engined models, the continuing weaker demand for exclusive products in China, and our value-oriented supply management,” says Matthias Becker, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG. “The response to the launch of the Cayenne Electric at the end of 2025 also shows,” Becker adds, “that Porsche is meeting customer expectations with its innovative and high-performance products.” The big news, however, was buried in the report: Advertisement – scroll for more content In Europe, for the first time, more electrified cars were delivered than pure combustion-engined models (57.9 per cent electrification share), with …

Plug-in Truck Grant slashes prices of electric lorries by up to £120k

Plug-in Truck Grant slashes prices of electric lorries by up to £120k

The UK Government is making electric lorries more affordable to help hauliers make the switch, while boosting growth and investment in the sector. Hauliers and fleet operators will access discounts of up to £120,000 on new electric lorries thanks to an additional £18m to increase the Plug-in Truck Grant until March 2026. The move is part of a £318m plan for green freight, which backs British businesses by slashing upfront costs on new lorries and helping them access lower running costs. This is all part of the government’s plan to reduce emissions while cutting costs, sparking growth and creating jobs as the sector moves to the technology of the future. How much will operators save on electric lorries? Similar to the government’s Electric Car Grant, which has saved over 45,000 drivers up to £3,750 when making the switch, the Plug-in-Truck Grant enables lorry operators to access savings of up to £120,000 when buying a new electric truck. New grant levels mean: Smaller trucks (4.25t to 12t) could save up to £20,000 Mid-sized trucks (12t to …

How Anthropic’s Ralph Plugin Makes Claude Complete Coding Tasks

How Anthropic’s Ralph Plugin Makes Claude Complete Coding Tasks

What if the key to unlocking unparalleled efficiency in your development workflow was hiding in plain sight? Better Stack outlines how a seemingly quirky plugin, born from a bash loop and named after a lovable cartoon character, has quietly transformed into a innovative feature for developers. This isn’t just another coding gimmick, Anthropic’s Ralph plugin takes on one of the most frustrating challenges in AI development: incomplete or subpar outputs. By iteratively refining results until they meet precise standards, Ralph has redefined what’s possible in automation. Yet, despite its potential, many developers remain unaware of its existence or how to harness its full power. In this deep dive, we’ll explore how Ralph’s persistent, iterative approach is reshaping the way developers tackle complex tasks. From automating code conversions to refining outputs with surgical precision, Ralph offers a level of control and efficiency that feels almost futuristic. But it’s not without its quirks, balancing its resource costs and understanding its limitations are just as important as mastering its capabilities. Whether you’re curious about how this plugin works …
