Centre for Disaster Protection closes disaster preparedness gap

Centre for Disaster Protection closes disaster preparedness gap

Conor Meenan, Head of Labs at the Centre for Disaster Protection, discusses how innovation can help governments move from reacting to disasters to preparing for them before they strike. The cost, complexity, and frequency of climate and disaster impacts are on the rise. But the systems that many countries’ governments rely on were not built for planning and responding to these, or are struggling to keep up. The gap is widening fastest where risks are highest. Despite being able to anticipate future shocks, disaster planning and financing systems still too often treat disasters like surprises. Most money is arranged in the heat of the crisis – emergency budget allocations, borrowing, and unpredictable support from the international system. These responses are not only unreliable and inefficient, they can also be harmful. Funds raided from health, education, and social protection budgets carry consequences that extend well beyond the disaster itself. The case for pre-arranging financing Some countries are starting to choose a different path. By arranging financing in advance of a storm on the horizon, they can …

Trump gets tax protection, but DOJ fund is dead: Blanche

Trump gets tax protection, but DOJ fund is dead: Blanche

The Department of Justice has permanently abandoned plans for a $1.8 billion anti-weaponization compensation fund created to settle a lawsuit by President Donald Trump against the Internal Revenue Service, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche testified to a House panel on Tuesday. But Trump, his family members and related business entities remain protected from tax audits and enforcement actions in connection with tax returns filed before last month’s out-of-court settlement of his lawsuit, Blanche told the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies. Blanche, who previously served as Trump’s criminal defense attorney, personally signed off on the DOJ’s May 19 addendum to the settlement of the lawsuit that gave Trump and his family that protection, a day after the deal was announced. The addendum also bars the DOJ from prosecuting Trump and the others for cases that would be based on “Lawfare and/or Weaponization,” without defining what those terms mean or what alleged conduct by the targets could entail. “We are not moving forward with the fund, period,” Blanche told Rep. Grace Meng, …

Met Police investigate five royal protection officers over ‘misogynistic comments’

The Metropolitan Police has investigated five Royalty and Specialist Protection officers following allegations of misogynistic behaviour. A female member of staff at Kensington Palace issued a complaint about a string of “inappropriate” comments between August 2023 and September 2024. An official complaint was filed in October 2024, the Sun reported. A Met spokesperson said in a statement: “The reported behaviour falls below the high standards expected of officers, particularly those in frontline protective roles. Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement “As a result of our internal investigation into this matter, the officers received reflective practice to consider their actions and identify learning for the future. “It remains a priority for the Met to ensure all officers and staff uphold the highest standards of professionalism, so we can continue to build trust and confidence with those we serve.” It is understood that the behaviour of the officers was not found to meet the threshold for misconduct. However, senior Royal Household staff decided to stop them from working at any palaces in the future by removing their access passes. …

Disabled ACR on your TV? I set up a router-based VPN for further protection – here’s how

Kerry Wan/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. As a tech journalist, I am surprisingly hardline about limiting the number of smart and internet-enabled devices in my home. Mostly because I firmly believe that no one should be able to post to social media from their refrigerator, and an oven does not need to integrate Alexa for me to bake a cake. But another big reason I’m cautious is that the more smart devices you have connected to your network, the easier it is for hackers to access your data. It’s a big security risk that’s more prevalent than you’d think. Also: The best VPNs for streaming While many new smart TVs and internet-enabled appliances offer some level of data protection, whether through a dedicated chipset or integrated malware detection, these measures are at best weak and at worst outright ineffective. Thankfully, if you already subscribe to a VPN or are considering one, adding protection to your smart TV is fast and simple. Why should you use a VPN on your TV A …

Man sought court protection from wife, claiming she beat him up, took his money and accused him of affairs

Man sought court protection from wife, claiming she beat him up, took his money and accused him of affairs

SINGAPORE: A man sought multiple court orders including a personal protection order (PPO) and a no-contact order against his wife, claiming she had been beating him up, poked his private parts with needles and accused him of having affairs. A family court did not fully accept the man’s accounts of what happened and instead found that he had failed to show why a PPO should be granted for reasons including the fact that the couple now lived apart. According to a judgment published on Friday (May 22), the man sought a PPO, a no-contact order, a counselling order and a mandatory treatment order against his wife. The hearing was fixed before Magistrate Soh Kian Peng on Apr 16 this year, but the wife did not turn up despite reminders about the trial. The reason she gave for her absence was that she was receiving medical treatment in China and could not travel to Singapore for the trial, an explanation the magistrate rejected due to lack of a valid medical certificate. The woman asked for the …

The Justice Department, as part of the settlement, barred the federal government from prosecuting or pursuing “any and all claims” that could have been made by the IRS, which included “tax returns filed before” the effective date of the settlement, according to the document, signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. The protection extends to Trump, his family members, the Trump Organization and “parties including trusts, parent, sister or related companies, affiliates, and subsidiaries.” It covers any pending tax audits of Trump and the others referred to in the …

First Hydrogen finalises design and IP protection for enhanced ground drone with amphibious capabilities

First Hydrogen finalises design and IP protection for enhanced ground drone with amphibious capabilities

First Hydrogen Corp. is pleased to announce the successful completion of the design and intellectual property (IP) protection of a significant performance and efficiency optimisation including amphibious capabilities to its unmanned ground drone platform (“UGV”). Current UGV technologies generally fall into two categories. At one end are heavy, expensive autonomous tracked vehicles, which offer ruggedness but are costly, heavy, and limited in complex terrain navigation. At the other are quadruped robotic systems, which lack robustness and are constrained by lower speed, limited payload capacity, and restricted range. First Hydrogen’s UGV is designed to bridge this industry-recognised gap by delivering an extremely rugged, amphibious capable, mid-sized yet lightweight platform purpose-built for the demanding environments and high-speed operation. The latest upgrade is designed to enhance energy efficiency, while significantly improving traction and the UGV’s ability to traverse steep, loose, and undulating terrain. Based on the Company’s review of existing technologies and patent filings, First Hydrogen believes the industry has long recognised the need for a ground mobility platform capable of combining rugged terrain performance, payload capacity, range …
