Kim Jong Un confirms self-destruct policy for North Korean fighters in Ukraine war

Kim Jong Un has confirmed for the first time that North Korean soldiers follow a policy of killing themselves on the battlefield to avoid capture while fighting in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Speaking at the inauguration of a memorial museum dedicated to North Korean soldiers killed in the conflict, the North Korean dictator praised what he described as the “extraordinary heroism” of troops who “unhesitatingly opted for self-blasting, suicide attack”, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency. North Korea remains the only third party to deploy troops directly to the frontlines of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as part of a deal that cemented the axis between Vladimir Putin’s invading forces and the east Asian hermit kingdom. An estimated 15,000 North Korean soldiers have been deployed to Russia to support combat operations, including efforts to recapture parts of the western Kursk region, according to South Korean intelligence. The exact number remains unclear, but nearly 2,000 are believed to have died while serving alongside Russian forces. The memorial to these soldiers was unveiled on Sunday in Pyongyang, …

North Korea fires suspected missiles as Pyongyang dismisses Seoul’s diplomacy hopes

SEOUL: North Korea fired an unidentified projectile toward the sea off its east coast on Wednesday (Apr 8), South Korea’s military said, following a separate launch detected a day earlier as Pyongyang doused Seoul’s hopes of an easing in tensions. South Korea’s military separately said it had detected the launch of a suspected ballistic missile from the Pyongyang area in North Korea on Tuesday. South Korean and US authorities were analysing the launch, it said. According to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, citing military officials, the projectile launched on Tuesday flew eastward before showing signs of an abnormality in the early stage of flight and disappearing. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff is leaning towards the possibility that the object was a ballistic missile, in what could amount to a failure after launch, Yonhap reported. South Korea typically announces North Korean ballistic missile launches promptly, as such tests violate UN Security Council resolutions, while it tends to be more cautious when projectiles are believed to be conventional weapons or cruise missiles. North Korea rejects the …

Kim says North Korea could ‘get along’ with US, rebuffs closer ties with Seoul

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has suggested his country could “get along” with the United States but declared that South Korea – Washington’s security ally – remained its “most hostile” enemy, state media reported Thursday. Kim made the remarks at the end of a landmark party congress, urging Washington to respect Pyongyang’s status as a nuclear power. His words came as speculation grows that US President Donald Trump may seek some kind of meeting with Kim on the sidelines of a visit to China in April. If Washington “respects our country’s current status as stipulated in the Constitution … and withdraws its hostile policy … there is no reason why we cannot get along well with the United States”, Kim said, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). Kim Jon-Un’s sister promoted in rare North Korea party congress

The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been given a promotion in the ruling party structure during a rare party congress, state media reported Tuesday. The Workers’ Party Central Committee on Monday named Kim Yo Jong – previously a deputy department director – as a full department director, Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said. Thousands of party elites have packed the capital, Pyongyang, for a once-in-five-years summit of the ruling Workers’ Party, a gathering that directs state efforts on everything from diplomacy to war planning. The congress offers a rare glimpse into the political workings of reclusive North Korea and is widely seen as a forum for Kim to flex his grip on power. Kim Yo Jong has long been among her brother’s closest lieutenants and one of the most influential women in the isolated regime. On Monday, Kim oversaw the completion ceremony of 10,000 houses in Hwasong District, Pyongyang, which achieved the goal of 50,000 new houses in the metropolitan area set during the Eighth Congress five years ago, according to KCNA. “Based on the transformational achievements … during the Eighth period, the Ninth Congress of the party will set a grander goal of restoration and creation,” Kim said, according to KCNA. Meanwhile, KCNA said the representatives and audience set to participate in the upcoming party congress arrived in Pyongyang on Monday. North Korea’s Kim purges vice premier, slams ‘incompetent’ officials

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has fired his vice premier and railed against “incompetent” officials in a rare and very public broadside against apparatchiks at the opening of a critical factory, state media said Tuesday. Vice Premier Yang Sung Ho was sacked “on the spot”, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said, in a speech in which Kim attacked “irresponsible, rude and incompetent leading officials”. “Please, Comrade Vice Premier, resign by yourself when you can do it on your own before it is too late,” Kim reportedly said. Nuclear-armed North Korea, which is under multiple sets of sanctions over its weapons programmes, has long struggled with its moribund state-managed economy and chronic food shortages. Kim has been quick to scold lazy officials for alleged mismanagement of economic policy but such a public dismissal is very rare. Touring the opening of an industrial machinery complex on Monday, Kim blasted cadres who for “too long been accustomed to defeatism, irresponsibility and passiveness”. Yang was “unfit to be entrusted with heavy duties”, Kim said, according to …
