The Holborn and St Pancras byelection doesn’t answer the big questions about British politics – but it provides hints

The Holborn and St Pancras byelection doesn’t answer the big questions about British politics – but it provides hints

Holborn and St Pancras is a very unusual constituency. While often referred to as being in “north London”, a significant chunk of it covers the west end, including parts of Covent Garden, Fitzrovia and all of Bloomsbury. It is also home to three of the UK’s largest mainline train stations, two of the three Inns of Court and the British Museum – and, for the time being, the Bayeux Tapestry. Prime Minister Andy Burnham cracked a good joke at the ceremonial event to launch the tapestry’s visit, speaking of “a leader emerging from a northern territory, travelling to the south of England in search of the crown. Clearly something that couldn’t happen today.” The byelection was a major test of Burnham’s popularity and his capacity to unite the British centre-left. Labour did remarkably well, with Camden Council leader Sagal Abdi-Wali losing just under four percentage points from Keir Starmer’s 2024 vote share. She easily beat the Green party candidate Zack Polanski. Read more: Zack Polanski loses his byelection bid – and the Green party’s Zionism …

Beyond religion and atheism: The secret third answer to big questions

Beyond religion and atheism: The secret third answer to big questions

For decades, atheists have used one move to dismantle the case for God: swap in an evil one and show that the arguments work just as well. Philosopher Jack Symes was convinced by it, and was 50,000 words into a book defending atheism when he noticed that the exercise kept tipping toward goodness. He threw out the manuscript and started over. This video Beyond religion and atheism: The secret third answer to big questions is featured on Big Think. Source link

DraftKings VIP Program Congressional Questions

DraftKings VIP Program Congressional Questions

Sen. Richard Blumenthal plans to seek information from DraftKings and prediction-market platforms including Kalshi and Polymarket, while continuing to press FanDuel for details about its VIP bettor program, Front Office Sports reported. The comments signal broader congressional questioning, not a filed enforcement action or an established violation. The inquiry could touch both DraftKings’ sportsbook VIP practices and its expansion into prediction markets. Its VIP program has drawn attention amid wider concerns about how sportsbooks engage high-volume bettors. Lawmakers want details on VIP promotions Blumenthal, Rep. Paul Tonko and Rep. Valerie Foushee said in a letter that FanDuel had not adequately addressed their questions. They want to know which other athletes and celebrities sent personalized videos to VIP bettors and what safeguards the company uses to avoid encouraging people with gambling problems to keep betting. Blumenthal told Front Office Sports he intends to ask DraftKings the same questions, and to raise them with prediction-market platforms. That brings the inquiry beyond FanDuel’s handling of celebrity videos and into a debate about whether customer loyalty programs and promotions …

Kalshi Safeguards Face Self-Exclusion Questions

Kalshi Safeguards Face Self-Exclusion Questions

A Pennsylvania man who self-excluded from DraftKings and FanDuel after bankruptcy later found Kalshi through an Instagram ad and lost more than $25,000, NPR reported. Identified by his middle name, Thomas said he began betting on DraftKings and FanDuel during the pandemic, mostly on football and tennis parlays. Over several years, he accumulated about $75,000 in credit-card and personal-loan debt and lost more than $50,000 on online sportsbooks. Thomas filed for bankruptcy in late 2023, settled with most of his creditors and banned himself from DraftKings and FanDuel. He swore off gambling, but about two years later an Instagram promotion offering a $20 bonus for spending $10 introduced him to Kalshi. He told NPR that his Kalshi bets grew from $10 to hundreds and then thousands of dollars, leaving him more than $25,000 in the red. After asking a live agent to close his account, he made three more requests by email over two days. Kalshi eventually barred him from betting. The case highlights how state gambling protections can differ for prediction markets. NPR reported …

“Where Is The Onshoring?” UBS Questions White House Investment Boom As Foreign Money Flows Into Takeovers

President Trump recently said that over $20 trillion in foreign investment has flowed into the US so far in his second term. “We have more money being spent from outside countries and companies. Over $20 trillion. That’s five, six, seven times higher than any country. Not just here, any country ever,” Trump said, adding that the total could climb to $25 trillion by the end of his term. 🚨 President Trump stuns the World by saying our Manufacturing is higher than ever and $20 Trillion dollars is being invested into America “No country in HISTORY has ever been close” THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I VOTED FOR Follow @mr_pool001 pic.twitter.com/qPr4i4INN2 — Mr pool (@mr_pool001) October 1, 2026 Yet UBS economist Arend Kapteyn wrote in a new note on Thursday that new foreign direct investment totaled $232 billion in 2025, roughly $30 billion below its 10-year average. He said that, adjusted for inflation, investment that year was below every pre-pandemic year. “One way to assess whether manufacturing is being ‘onshored’ to the US is through foreign direct …

Weak 29K Jobs Report Raises Questions Over Interest Rate Policy | National News

The job market showed signs of stalling in September as employers added a paltry 29,000 workers, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Friday. The unemployment rate inched up to 4.2% in what was clearly a disappointing report. Economists had forecast a gain of about 85,000, with the unemployment rate at 4.1%. The August number was revised downward by 29,000 from the 162,000 originally reported. “Total nonfarm payroll employment changed little in September (+29,000), following an average monthly gain of 45,000 over the prior 12 months,” the Bureau of Labor Statistics said in its Friday announcement. “Health care employment continued its upward trend in September (+17,000), but at a slower pace than the average monthly gain over the prior 12 months (+33,000).” The Best Cartoons on Donald Trump The meager increase in jobs will likely increase calls for a rate hike later this month when the Federal Reserve meets to consider interest rates. With an upwardly revised report on gross domestic product for the second quarter released on Wednesday – to 2.2% annual growth from …

Scroll down to listen to the full podcast episode. Sussex security alert at Archie and Lilibet’s school Q: There have been reports of a security alert at Archie and Lilibet’s school in the UK. What happened? Emily Nash: “Hot off the press, another school story for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. This time it involves two men who were spotted carrying backpacks around the perimeter of the school. And don’t forget, this is the second school Archie and Lily have started out since moving to the UK. Prince Harry embraces Archie and Lilibet at home. A spokesperson for the Sussexes recently condemned “reckless” paparazzi behaviour near the children’s school, calling it an unacceptable intrusion into their young lives. “And of course, sparked huge security concerns. For anyone who’s not been following the UK news over the last week or so, there was a major security alert near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire over the weekend, which involved, again, some young men carrying backpacks and a white van. So this obviously sparked concerns and both private …

Two Questions We Must Ask About Dementia Right Now

Two Questions We Must Ask About Dementia Right Now

After more than two decades working in hospice and end-of-life care, I can say that caring for someone living with dementia can be one of the most intense caregiving experiences a family will ever face. The journey may continue for years. It can affect a caregiver physically, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, and financially. As the disease progresses, families may experience repeated losses while the person they love is still physically present. Roles and relationships change. Sleep, work, finances, health, and family dynamics can all be affected. Yet we continue to treat dementia caregiving as though one family member should somehow be able to manage it all. That is impossible. They cannot, and they should never be expected to. At the same time, many of us have not clearly documented what we would want if we developed dementia. We may have a basic advance directive, but do we have a dementia advance directive? When we discuss the growing dementia crisis, I believe we must focus on two urgent questions: How do we support the people caring for …

Meta, Google, Amazon, Microsoft draw Warren questions about AI tax breaks

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., speaks with CNBC on June 24, 2026. CNBC Senate Democrats are seeking information on how artificial intelligence and data center spending by Meta, Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft has been subsidized by tax breaks authorized in the 2025 tax cutting and spending package passed by Republicans at the behest of President Donald Trump. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., led the letters, which were sent Sunday night and shared exclusively with CNBC, to the CEOs of the four companies asking for information on tax deductions they’ve claimed related to AI and data center development and on their lobbying efforts in the lead-up to the passage of the 2025 legislation, known more commonly as the “one big beautiful bill” act. Sens. Tina Smith, D-Minn., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., joined the letters. “Americans across the country are worried about the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on their lives —from increased utility bills to threats of job losses and cyberattacks,” the lawmakers wrote in the letters. “But rather …

The key questions police are trying to urgently answer in RAF Fairford probe | Politics | News

RAF Fairford is home to US bombers (Image: Getty) The sight of Army bomb disposal teams swooping into a village is a chilling reminder of the threats facing the UK. Details are still scarce at this moment about what, or indeed may not, have transpired in Welford. But intelligence chiefs were sufficiently concerned to put RAF Fairford on FPCON Delta. This is the highest threat level that the US Department of Defense can declare. It is used when a terrorist attack has happened or when an attack against a specific location is imminent. And counter-terrorism police are already combing for clues as explosives specialists examine a number of vehicles. It has sparked fears of a major attack plot. RAF Fairford hosts United States air force personnel and has been used to launch operations against Iran during the war in the Middle East. Suspicion will immediately fall on Tehran. To be clear, it’s far too early to say whether that could be the case. And for all the talk of Russian hybrid warfare, it is extraordinarily …
