Key US primary races take shape

Tuesday was primary election day in six US states, with both major parties holding runoffs in several races. In Minnesota, the progressive Lieutenant Governor defeated Representative Angie Craig in the Democratic Senate primary, while Wisconsin’s Republican gubernatorial primary remains too close to call. Also in Minnesota, eccentric Donald Trump-endorsed businessman Mike Lindell lost the Republican governor’s primary to House Speaker Lisa Demuth. And in South Carolina, Darlene Graham advanced to the Republican Senate runoff to succeed her late brother, Lindsay Graham, who died suddenly last month. Joshua Lott | Getty Images Progressives and moderates will face off again in Tuesday’s Democratic primary elections in Wisconsin and Minnesota as the party decides whether to lurch further to the left or chart toward the middle after crushing losses to Republicans in 2024. Populist progressives in recent months have capitalized on economic anger to defeat establishment Democratic candidates across the country, setting off a potentially seismic political shift within the party. Last week in Michigan, progressive former health official Abdul El-Sayed defeated the more moderate Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens in a primary to succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich. — the latest stunning upset for longtime party power brokers who backed Stevens. The progressive swell will be tested again on Tuesday as candidates in the mold of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., vie for gubernatorial and Senate nominations in Wisconsin and Minnesota against establishment-backed moderates. Wisconsin In Wisconsin, Francesca Hong …

Samuel Corum/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Samuel Corum/Getty Images Months into the primaries, the question on everyone’s mind is whether Democrats can flip the Senate. Many of the battlegrounds are set and a few are yet to be decided in primaries but the answer remains murky. The math is simple: with President Trump in the White House and a Republican vice president holding the tie-breaking vote, Democrats need to flip four seats to take control. Republicans say they’ll hold the majority, though they admit it could be narrow. Given history and a less than favorable political environment for Republicans, the party is bracing for Democrats to pick up between one and three seats. The fact remains that neither party has easily won Senate races in states that voted for the other party’s presidential candidate. Still, Trump’s low approval rating and the War with Iran combined with economic frustration across the country could change where things stand. Some trends in the Democratic Senate primaries …

Princess Anne brings back 40-year-old diamond encrusted brooch for the races

The Princess Royal brought back one of her signature brooches as she stepped out at Ascot racecourse on Saturday. Anne, 75, looked elegant in a jacquard green belted frock with a cream jacket and a matching pillbox hat as she arrived at the Berkshire meet. Pinned to her coat was a delicate gold horse brooch, featuring diamond-encrusted accents on its mane and tail. She has owned the accessory since the 1980s and has regularly worn it for the races, including Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot. Its true origin is not known but it’s likely to be in recognition of Princess Royal’s impressive equestrian career and love of horses. © Getty ImagesPrincess Anne wore her beloved gold and diamond horse brooch She completed her look with a three-strand pearl necklace, matching earrings and a pop of lipstick. Anne was joined at the racecourse by her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, who sported a taupe suit with a white shirt and a patterned tie. Franklin/AP Arizona is the one state holding primaries Tuesday and offers a look at voter sentiment in a swing state, where Republicans narrowly outnumber independents and Democrats. The state went for President Trump in 2024 but elected a Democratic governor two years before that. Republicans will be trying to flip the governor’s office this fall while Democrats hope to pick up a couple of seats in the U.S. House, which could determine whether the party can wrest control from the GOP. Republicans hold the House by just a few seats, and the party in the White House usually loses seats in the midterms. Some of the key races could come down to who has the support of Trump or Turning Point USA, the conservative group founded by the late Charlie Kirk, who lived in Arizona. Democrats vie to flip an open toss-up district Arizona’s 1st …

Somalia races to save Radio Mogadishu’s fading archive | Media News

Mogadishu, Somalia – Thousands of reel-to-reel tapes sit in an air-conditioned room in the archive of Somalia’s public radio, Radio Mogadishu, stacked on steel shelves and lined up like old manuscripts beneath a thick layer of dust. Each reel contains a small fragment of Somalia’s 20th-century history, from news bulletins to speeches, music and voices that were once beamed out across the nation’s airwaves, some dating back to the early 1950s. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list Abdiqadir Geedi Robleh, an archivist at Radio Mogadishu, threads a reel onto an old tape machine, connects it to a computer, and records the contents of each tape. A tape with a love song by Mohamed Mooge Liban, a prominent singer fills the room, and Robleh is transported, he says, to his youth. He is working with a small team to digitise and methodically order approximately 400,000 hours of broadcasts, officials here say, before the magnetic tape deteriorates beyond recovery, taking with it a crucial record of the country’s past.
