CNN Sees Metric That Looks ‘Darn Good’ For Republicans Before The Midterms

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten reported Wednesday that voter registration data in four swing states favors Republicans heading into the November midterms. This measure runs counter to polling showing Democrats ahead. Enten told anchor John Berman that Republicans have improved their party registration margin relative to Democrats by 4 to 8 points in Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania since the midpoint of President Donald Trump’s first term. The comparison covers the eight years between the 2018 midterms and the current cycle and draws on state registration records, which count voters who have signed up with each party. Polls, by contrast, estimate how a sample of respondents say they plan to vote, and pollsters weight those results using their own assumptions about who will turn out. “When you take a look at how people are actually registering — this is not polling data — compared to where we were eight years ago, Republicans are doing considerably better [than the Dems] in what are the swing states,” Enten said on CNN. Berman then asked whether …

It extends to her congressman, Mike Lawler, a two-term Republican running for reelection in New York’s 17th district. It is one of the closest races in the country in a …

Inside Elon Musk’s Midterm Spending Spree

Inside Elon Musk’s Midterm Spending Spree

Leah Feiger: I think that’s a really, really good point, honestly. And obviously there’s a clear fear that a Lina Khan-esque figure could come in and wreak havoc. But to your point, that havoc will be paperwork. No, I hear you. I hear you. Zoë Schiffer: I mean, think about it. The one time he was held accountable in a real way was for saying that he had money to take Tesla private. He had funding secured to take Tesla private. What was the outcome of that? He was fined $20 million? How much is Elon Musk worth? Ultimately, even if that number hurts, he doesn’t want to pay it, it’s kind of a drop in the bucket. Leah Feiger: No, he’s a trillionaire now, again, I guess. And I guess to that point, this is not the first time that super PACs or big money in politics has stirred up a little bit of controversy. We had this big conversation in 2024 about how crazy it was that Elon Musk was just throwing money …

WIRED’s Midterms Races to Watch

WIRED’s Midterms Races to Watch

The midterm elections are a month away and the candidate pool has never been more WIRED. Races are being run—and likely decided—on Silicon Valley funding, data center debates, AI regulation, extremism, and more. From the contests that will decide the Senate to less attention-grabbing ones that will decide who controls voting in key swing states in 2028,  these are the candidates and races we think are most worth watching closely in the weeks to come, and which we’ll be keeping an eye on. Texas’ 10th Congressional District: Chris Gober (R) vs. Caitlin Rourk (D) WHAT MAKES THIS A WIRED RACE: DOGE, Musk, America PAC, AI lobby Former America PAC lawyer Chris Gober is running to represent Texas’ newly gerrymandered 10th district. Gober served as counsel for the Texas Republican congressional delegation for the 2025 redistricting effort that saw a new, gerrymandered map created for the 2026 midterms—one that was meant to create five new Republican congressional districts. In addition to representing Musk’s PAC, Gober’s law firm, Lex Politica, has also represented Elevate New Mexico, a …

Latino voters swing away from Trump and Republicans

Latino voters swing away from Trump and Republicans

There are clear signs his party is paying the price. A greater share of Latino voters hold negative views of the Republican Party than at any time since 2016, and Democrats have leads on issues like dealing with the economy, immigration, the cost of living, corruption and healthcare. Two years ago, Latino voters gave Trump a 4-point edge over then-Vice President Kamala Harris on handling the economy. Today, they give Democrats a 21-point advantage on the same question. Against that backdrop, Democrats have a 24-point lead on whom Latino voters want to see in control of Congress, 59%-35%. That’s double the lead they had among Latino voters at this point in 2024, though not quite at the heights the party enjoyed at this time in 2018, according to NBC News polling from just before that election. Nearly a fifth of Latino voters who backed Trump in 2024 say they do not prefer a Republican-controlled Congress, with 14% saying they support Democrats and 8% unsure in their preference. The shifts come after the Republican Party made …

GOP senator says midterms could be like 2006: ‘And 2006 was really bad for Republicans’

GOP senator says midterms could be like 2006: ‘And 2006 was really bad for Republicans’

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) is warning that Republicans could get drubbed in this year’s midterm election, much like what happened to Republicans 20 years ago during former President George W. Bush’s second midterm elections, when the GOP lost control of both the House and Senate. Daines, who headed the Senate Republican campaign arm in the… Source link

Trump leans into Iran war, admits it could cost Republicans the midterms

President Donald Trump’s war against Iran, which just passed its seven month mark, is deeply unpopular among Americans, new polling continues to suggest. A survey from the Associated Press/NORC Research Center published Thursday reports that 71% of adults disapprove of how Trump is handling the Iran war, started alongside Israel in late February, while 69% say the war has not been worth fighting. “More than half of adults say the country as a whole, the national economy, and their local economy are worse off since Trump was reelected in 2025,” the survey reports. “Most Americans (73%) say the country is heading in the wrong direction, including 92% of Democrats and 47% of Republicans.” The president seems to realize this growing frustration could cost Republicans dearly in the midterm elections next month, possibly losing GOP control of the House, Senate or both. “It’s possible,” Trump mused to reporters outside the White House Thursday. But he continues to insist that the Iran war is worth it — ostensibly to prevent the nation from obtaining a nuclear weapon, …

These Extremists Are Running for Election in November

These Extremists Are Running for Election in November

There are five weeks left until the midterm elections, and extremism is on the ballot in much of the US. A WIRED review of candidates running for statewide and federal positions in November, along with exclusive data on candidates running for state-level positions, reveals hundreds of Republican candidates who openly express virulently hateful ideologies, share racist content online, have close ties to white supremacist and antisemitic figures, and are members of far-right groups online. President Donald Trump and his administration have openly embraced, endorsed and defended many of these candidates. At a local level, over 500 candidates running for state legislator positions in November are members of far-right groups on Facebook that promote militias, gun rights, and Christian nationalism, according to data collected by the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights and shared with WIRED. While many extremist candidates—such as groyper James Fishback and antisemitic influencer Dan Bilzarian— didn’t make it through GOP primaries, many made it to the general election, and a number of them are expected to win. “The candidates are …

Supreme Court rejects Republicans’ Missouri redistricting push for third time

Supreme Court rejects Republicans’ Missouri redistricting push for third time

WASHINGTON — For the third time, the Supreme Court on Friday shut down efforts by Missouri Republicans to use a new congressional map in the midterm elections that are already underway. The court blocked an appeals court ruling that sought to revive the 2025 map despite two previous Supreme Court decisions and a ruling by the Missouri Supreme Court that ruled against Republicans on the same issue. There were no dissents. “At this late date, ordering reversion to the 2025 map in the midst of an ongoing election would usher in electoral chaos,” the ruling said. In doing so, the justices granted an emergency application filed by People Not Politicians, the group challenging the new map. “We are done with corrupt politicians trying to force their map into effect outside the process outlined in the Missouri constitution,” Richard von Glahn, executive director of People Not Politicians Missouri, said in a statement. “We have said from the beginning, people, not politicians will be the final deciders on this DC power grab.” The election will proceed using …
