UC to review high school course requirements amid SAT debate

UC to review high school course requirements amid SAT debate

As UC embarks on a new and speedier plan to determine whether to reinstate SAT standardized testing, the university’s admissions board is also moving to reexamine key academic requirements that reach even further into California high school classrooms: the exact set of courses students must take to get in. Those requirements dictate what California teenagers learn long before they even fill out an application. Because of the size and influence of UC across the state, the university’s course requirements determine aspiring students’ high school careers. On Wednesday, the UC Academic Council, the executive body of the systemwide faculty Academic Senate, ordered the university’s admissions board to review both questions. The board will study standardized testing first, delivering a report to the council by Feb. 12, 2027, the council announced. The Board of Regents would receive a recommendation on whether to require the SAT or ACT no later than June 2027. The admissions board will then turn to high school course requirements, submitting an initial report to the council in May 2027; the regents would take …

Trump’s New AI Executive Order Has No Teeth and No Requirements

Trump’s New AI Executive Order Has No Teeth and No Requirements

Under an executive order issued by President Donald Trump, AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic are being asked to submit advanced artificial intelligence models to the government for vetting on cybersecurity, confidentiality, “insider risk” and intellectual property protections. But as the executive order makes clear, AI companies are under no obligation to do much of anything.  At the end of a section ordering the creation of a vetting process in which AI companies would submit their models 30 days ahead of release, it states: “Nothing in this section shall be construed to authorize the creation of a mandatory governmental licensing, preclearance, or permitting requirement for the development, publication, release, or distribution of new AI models, including frontier models.” A White House representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Frontier models are cutting-edge AI models that could pose a major security risk, such as Anthropic’s Mythos, which the company kept from public release due to cybersecurity concerns. US-based AI companies are in a race to train and release artificial intelligence models, especially …

Subscribe to read this story ad-free Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content. The guidance was released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, meeting a June 1 deadline under President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” to explain how states should carry out the work rules. Beginning Jan. 1, many adults on Medicaid will need to work, attend school or volunteer for at least 80 hours a month to keep their coverage. The guidance also allows exemptions for people who are “medically frail” or have conditions that significantly limit their ability to work, such as cancer or substance use disorder. The guidance doesn’t include an exemption for people who are homeless. States will have discretion to determine which medical conditions qualify for exemptions. Nebraska, which implemented Medicaid work requirements this year, listed diagnoses that would qualify a person as medically frail in a nearly 300-page list …

UK Gambling Commission wagering requirements chart a course for 2026

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has introduced new changes that will affect online casinos, sportsbooks, bingo operators, and land-based casinos nationwide across 2026. The initial raft of changes took effect in January 2026 and applies to licensed gambling operators in Great Britain, but will have a wider impact on customers and account holders, marketing partners, and those responsible for compliance and risk. What do these wagering requirement changes mean? The UKGC outlined these changes in 2025, a formative period for games of chance in Britain, with the November 2025 Chancellor’s Budget widely expected to be detrimental to gambling operators. As we reported, the budget was not nearly as crippling to gambling firms and the wider commercial sector, but a consultation, published in error and then hastily reinstated, earmarked a possible 30% increase in gambling license fees from the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Labour attacked our pubs, tourism, and hospitality with National Insurance and Business Rates hikes and now they're hitting gambling with higher license fees. I know Labour MPs are a …
