South Korean Protesters Keep Calling for Re-Run of Election After Ballot Shortage

SEOUL, June 6 (Reuters) – Protesters outside a ballot-counting site in South Korea on Saturday rallied for a second day, demanding a re-run of local elections held earlier this week. Around 10,000 citizens were estimated ‌to have gathered at ‌the SK Olympic Handball Stadium as of 5:30 p.m. (0830 GMT), where votes were counted from Wednesday’s elections to pick mayors and local government officials and assembly members, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing an unofficial police estimate. Representatives at Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency were not immediately reached by Reuters to confirm the estimates. The protests follow a ballot shortage that prevented some eligible voters from casting their ballots across the country, prompting the resignation of the head of the National Election Commission. Fifty of 14,300 polling stations ran out of ballots and voting was temporarily suspended at 22 polling stations due to delays in receiving supplies, according to the election commission. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon said in a televised speech that the ballot shortage was intolerable and a violation of the right to vote. He demanded …

Trump Pardons Former US Congressman Convicted of Securities Fraud

WASHINGTON, June 5 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump has pardoned former U.S. Representative Stephen Buyer, an Indiana Republican, who was convicted of securities fraud for engaging in insider trading in 2018 as a T-Mobile US consultant ahead of ‌a $23 billion merger with Sprint. The ‌proclamation, issued on Thursday and announced by the White House on Friday, gave no specific rationale for the pardon other than to assert that Buyer’s service as a U.S. Army judge advocate general and member of Congress “was distinguished and highly productive.” It also said that Trump, in granting Buyer a “full, complete and unconditional pardon,” was acting on the “advice and recommendation” of 52 current and former members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives listed in the proclamation. Buyer served in the House as a Republican from Indiana between 1993 and 2011 before working as a corporate consultant. He was found guilty in March of 2023 on four counts of securities fraud, and was sentenced in September of that year to 22 months in prison. Prosecutors said …

French National Gets 20 Years in Mali Over Alleged Destabilisation Plot

BAMAKO, June 6 (Reuters) – A French national accused by Mali’s military-led government of involvement in a plot to destabilise the country last year has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, a person familiar with the matter ‌said on Friday, in a ‌case that has strained ties between Bamako and Paris. • Yann Vezilier is expected to serve his sentence in Mali following a conviction handed down late on Thursday, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media. • Mali’s government announced the arrest of Vezilier last August, along with two Malian generals, accusing him of acting on behalf of French intelligence services to mobilise political actors, civil society figures and military officers against Assimi Goita’s government. • France’s foreign ministry denied the accusations then, saying they were “unfounded” and that Vezilier’s arrest was in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. • France reiterated the denial following his sentencing. “Our agent was carrying out a security cooperation mission and in no form was …

Study Warns Biodiversity Loss Could Trigger Wave of Debt Crises

Study Warns Biodiversity Loss Could Trigger Wave of Debt Crises

LONDON, June 5 (Reuters) – Financial markets are underestimating the economic risks of biodiversity loss, potentially exposing countries to sovereign debt crises and sharply higher borrowing costs, according to research published on Friday. The study, led by economists from the Universities of Sussex, Sheffield and Heriot-Watt, presented what they described as the world’s ‌first biodiversity-adjusted sovereign credit ratings model. It ‌said existing ratings frameworks fail to incorporate environmental degradation, leaving some $83 trillion of global assets vulnerable to mispricing. Using an adjusted version of S&P Global’s ratings methodology, the researchers estimated that even a partial collapse of key ecosystems – including wild pollinators, marine fisheries and tropical forests – could increase annual global sovereign debt interest payments by $162 billion. “Financial markets are effectively blind to nature-related risks,” said the University of Sussex’s Matthew Agarwala. “As biodiversity loss undermines economic performance, it becomes harder for countries to service their debt, raising borrowing costs and fiscal strain.” Ecosystems underpin the global economy through “ecosystem services” like crop pollination and seafood production. Partial disruption to these could …

EU Weighs Rules to Cut Reliance on China Through Broader Supply Chains

BRUSSELS, June 5 (Reuters) – The European Commission is weighing legislation that could force companies in sensitive sectors to cut reliance on single suppliers – notably in China – and diversify to at least three sources, European Trade Commissioner Maros ‌Sefcovic said on Friday. The proposal ‌would be part of a broader review of EU trade defences due by the third quarter, including steps to speed up anti-dumping and anti-subsidy cases and potential new measures to tackle overcapacity. “Diversification now requires a dedicated instrument,” Sefcovic told a conference of the European Policy Centre think tank in Brussels. “We understand the urgency for critical minerals, but every high-risk sector must be weaned off single supplier dependence.” Sefcovic said that by having at least three different sources of ‘critical supplies’, companies would be shielded from general supply chain disruptions and government policies such as the export restrictions that China has imposed on certain rare earths. He did not specify what sectors or suppliers would be high-risk or critical. Sefcovic said EU leaders meeting in Brussels for a summit on …

Russian Nationalists Slam Zelenskiy Letter as PR Stunt Designed to Stir Discontent

MOSCOW, June 5 (Reuters) – Russian nationalists dismissed on Friday an open letter penned by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to President Vladimir Putin as a malicious public relations stunt designed to stir up discontent inside Russia rather than end the war.    Zelenskiy published his letter, in which he proposed the two leaders meet to agree an end to more than four years of fighting, ‌as Putin was holding an event with ‌foreign news editors at his showcase economic forum in St Petersburg. Putin stuck to his hardline stance on the war during the meeting and said his troops were advancing on the battlefield every day. But he also said U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposals for peace could end the fighting if Kyiv was ready to compromise. Both sides accuse the other of refusing to compromise. Putin – who is due to speak later on Friday at the forum – has yet to respond to the letter, but his spokesman said he had been briefed on its contents. Russian nationalists and war bloggers were scathing in …

Trump’s ‘Crazy’ Rebuke Undercuts Netanyahu at a Critical Moment

(Refiles to fix typo in name of former Netanyahu adviser Nadav Strauchler throughout) By Alexander Cornwell, Rami Ayyub and Steve Holland JERUSALEM/WASHINGTON, June 5 (Reuters) – Benjamin Netanyahu has long portrayed himself to the Israeli public as being uniquely adept in dealing with Donald Trump, capable of winning and sustaining the U.S. president’s backing. But an acrimonious phone call this week where the president called the prime minister “fucking crazy”, first leaked to the media and later publicly confirmed by Trump himself, laid bare the strains that have at times emerged between the two leaders. Israeli officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged the call was among the most heated the premier has had with Trump. One of the officials said the leak had damaged Netanyahu politically ahead of this year’s national election. The U.S. website Axios broke news of the call on Monday, saying Trump had angrily ‌confronted Netanyahu over Israeli threats to resume air strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs. “Everybody hates ‌you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this,” Trump was quoted as …
