In January, ex-first lady Kim Keon Hee was sentenced to 20 months in prison in a district court for receiving gifts including a Graff diamond necklace and a Chanel bag from the Unification Church, which sought political favors from the government. However, she was acquitted of involvement in a stock price manipulation scheme before she became first lady. Both parties appealed. SEOUL: A South Korean appeals court increased the corruption sentence for former first lady Kim Keon Hee on Tuesday (Apr 28) to four years in jail, up from 20 months, after finding her guilty of stock manipulation and bribery. The much heavier penalty came as the court overturned Kim’s prior acquittal by a lower court on stock price manipulation charges. “The court sentences the defendant to four years in prison and imposes a 50 million won (US$34,000) fine,” the Seoul High Court said in a verdict televised live. It found Kim guilty of manipulating the share price of Deutsch Motors, a South Korean car dealer, which it ruled a “collusive … trading act constituting market manipulation”. “The defendant appears to have participated in such conduct,” the court said as it overturned her initial acquittal. Prosecutors disagreed and pointed to an instance where Combs showed Ventura he had videos of her engaging in sex parties hours before another “freak-off” in an apparent bid to ensure her continued participation. “These incidents are specifically tied to transportation,” prosecutor Christy Slavik told the court.  In a sign of the complex legal arguments, Slavik at one point drew an analogy of pizza to highlight how certain “slices” of evidence were relevant to the ultimate sentencing decision. The court did not issue an immediate ruling in what one judge, William Nardini, called an “exceptionally difficult case.” Combs is also appealing his conviction though that was not discussed in detail on Thursday. For most of us, the Universe doesn’t appear to change all that much on the scale of even a human lifetime. Sure, the stars move relative to one another, our Sun burns through a little more of its fuel, and the Moon slowly spirals away from the Earth as our rotation rate gradually slows down. Meanwhile, on grander scales, older stars across the Universe run out of fuel and die, new episodes of star-formation are triggered, and the Universe continues to expand, driving individual galaxies, groups of galaxies, and clusters of galaxies mutually apart, faster and faster, as time goes on. But all of these events take time: enormous amounts of time. Stars occasionally pass through our Oort Cloud, but that only happens a couple of times every million years. The Sun will continue burning for 5-7 billion more years before it evolves to the next stage of its life. The Moon spirals away from the Earth so slowly that we’ll continue to have total solar eclipses for hundreds of millions of years. And star-formation …

A French court Monday issued an arrest warrant and a one-year jail sentence against the Chinese captain of a suspected Russian “shadow fleet” tanker over failing to comply with orders to stop his ship. Chen Zhangjie, 39, was sentenced in absentia after the French navy boarded the Boracay tanker in September before releasing the vessel and its crew days later, in what Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned as “piracy”. The court in the western city of Brest also ordered Zhangjie to pay a 150,000-euro ($172,000) fine. The vessel, claiming to be flagged in Benin, was thought to be part of a fleet transporting Russian oil in violation of Western sanctions imposed over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. A serial abuser who throttled women during a campaign of violence that spanned more than three decades has been sentenced to an order for lifelong restriction. Bruce Buchanan, 61, subjected one woman to rape three times, and during an attack squeezed her throat and forced his hand into her mouth. He also verbally and physically abused the victim at addresses in the Scottish Highlands. A court heard how Buchanan threatened the woman while armed with a knife and also sat on her and pressed his thumbs into her eyes during his abuse. Jurors were also told of how he grabbed a second woman by the nose, compressed it while threatening her, and forced her to the ground during an attack. Vivienne Taylor, 28, who was born a man, was sentenced to 14 months in jail after pleading guilty to stalking, causing serious alarm or distress, to Tina Rashid. The stalking campaign stretched across four years and affected Ms Rashid’s work, family and social life. Ms Rashid, a senior consultant with a specialism in genital surgery for trans women, became so fearful of former patient Taylor she carried a safety alarm and paid £60-a-day for taxis to and from work.
